Genotoxicity study of Ethiopian medicinal plant extracts on HepG2 cells.

BACKGROUND: Most of herbal medicines are used without any standard safety and toxicological trials although common assumption is that these products are nontoxic. However, this assumption is incorrect and dangerous, so toxicological studies should be done for herbal drugs. Although Pterolobium stellatum, Otostegia integrifolia and Vernonia amygdalina root extracts are frequently used in Ethiopian traditional medicine, there are no evidences of their active toxic compounds. Therefore, we made an effort to assess probable genotoxic effect of these plant extracts on DNA of human hematoma (HepG2)

Screening of microfilaricidal effects of plant extracts against Dirofilaria immitis.

Canine dirofilariasis is a common tropical parasitic disease of companion animals, caused by infestation of Dirofilaria immitis filarids within the pulmonary arteries and extending into the right heart. Increased reports of adverse reactions elicited by current microfilaricidal agents against D. immitis such as neurological disorders, circulatory collapse and potential resistance against these agents, warrant the search for new agents in forms of plant extracts. The use of plant extracts in therapeutic medicine is commonly met with scepticism by the veterinary community, thus the lack of focus

The Modulation of Melanogenesis in B16 Cells Upon Treatment with Plant Extracts and Isolated Plant Compounds.

Plants are a rich source of secondary metabolites that exhibit numerous desired properties. The compounds may influence the biology of melanocytes, pigment cells that produce melanin, by modulating numerous signaling pathways, including cAMP/PKA, MAPKs and PI3K/AKT. Its downstream target is microphthalmia-associated transcription factor, responsible for the expression of the tyrosinase enzyme, which plays a major role in melanogenesis. Therefore, this literature review aims to provide insights related to melanogenesis modulation mechanisms of plant extracts and isolated plant compounds in B16

Therapeutical strategies for anxiety and anxiety-like disorders using plant-derived natural compounds and plant extracts.

Anxiety and anxiety-like disorders describe many mental disorders, yet fear is a common overwhelming symptom often leading to depression. Currently two basic strategies are discussed to treat anxiety: pharmacotherapy or psychotherapy. In the pharmacotherapeutical clinical approach, several conventional synthetic anxiolytic drugs are being used with several adverse effects. Therefore, studies to find suitable safe medicines from natural sources are being sought by researchers. The results of a plethora experimental studies demonstrated that dietary phytochemicals like alkaloids, terpenes, flavo

Electrochemical evaluation of plant extracts as potential antidotes for acetaminophen poisoning.

Acetaminophen, a widely used analgesic, causes severe liver damage in overdose situations due to N-acetyl-p-benzoquinoneimine (NAPQI), a toxic metabolic intermediate. Current antidotes, like N-acetylcysteine (NAC), are effective but costly and not universally accessible. There is a critical need for novel, cost-effective antidotes to mitigate acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity. This study investigates the electrochemical oxidation of acetaminophen in the presence of plant extracts, including pomegranate peel, pomegranate, bell pepper, black radish, and turnip, to evaluate their potential as
