Ascophyllum nodosum based plant biostimulant shapes the bacterial community in the rhizosphere of corn.

BACKGROUND: Plant biostimulants are an emerging class of agricultural inputs known to enhance plant growth and improve their tolerance to abiotic stress. While biostimulants are widely used, their mechanisms of action remain poorly understood. This study investigates the effects of an Ascophyllum nodosum-based biostimulant (ANE) on the rhizosphere bacterial communities of corn (Zea mays). RESULTS: Root exudates from ANE root-treated plants promoted the swarming motility of Pseudomonas protegens (CHA0), a plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium. Gene expression analysis showed that root exudates

Increasing the Size of the Microbial Biomass Altered Bacterial Community Structure which Enhances Plant Phosphorus Uptake.

Agricultural production can be limited by low phosphorus (P) availability, with soil P being constrained by sorption and precipitation reactions making it less available for plant uptake. There are strong links between carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) availability and P cycling within soil P pools, with microorganisms being an integral component of soil P cycling mediating the availability of P to plants. Here we tested a conceptual model that proposes (i) the addition of readily-available organic substrates would increase the size of the microbial biomass thus exhausting the pool of easily-availab

Harnessing PGPR inoculation through exogenous foliar application of salicylic acid and microbial extracts for improving rice growth.

Plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) should effectively colonize along the plant root to enhance the plant and soil health. The present investigation aims to improve the PGPR-mediated plant health benefits through above-ground foliar management. A green fluorescent protein-tagged PGPR strain, Pseudomonas chlororaphis (ZSB15-M2) was inoculated in a nonautoclaved agricultural soil before rice culturing. Salicylic acid and cell extracts of Corynebacterium glutamicum and Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a supply of hormonal and inducer compounds were applied on the foliage of the 10-days-old ric

Regulatory mechanisms of synthetic microbial communities on rhizosphere microecology to alleviate continuous monoculture obstacles of medicinal plants.

Driven by industrial policies and market expansion, China has formed the world's largest medicinal plant cultivation industry. However, sustainable herbal production is seriously hindered by continuous monoculture obstacles (CMOs), which arise from prolonged single-species successive cultivation and manifest as comprehensive soil degradation featuring autotoxic allelochemical buildup, unbalanced rhizosphere microbiota, impaired soil physicochemical conditions, and frequent soil-borne pathogen outbreaks. Such adverse alterations lower soil enzyme activity, disrupt microbial community homeostasi

Epichloë Endophytes Potentially Facilitate Host Plant Recruitment of Rhizosphere Microbiota Carrying Beneficial Traits.

Plant-microbe symbiotic relationships drive ecosystem evolution. This study employed metabolomics and metagenomic technologies to investigate the effects of the aboveground-restricted endophytic fungus Epichloë guerinii in the host plant Melica transsilvanica on the rhizosphere microbial community structure and functional traits. Our results revealed that the presence of E. guerinii significantly increased the secretion of organic acids, amino acids, and sugar alcohols from the host root system. These exudates correlated strongly with abundant, plant growth-promoting rhizosphere microorganisms

Root exudates and rhizosphere soil bacterial relationships of Nitraria tangutorum are linked to k-strategists bacterial community under salt stress.

When plants are subjected to various biotic and abiotic stresses, the root system responds actively by secreting different types and amounts of bioactive compounds, while affects the structure of rhizosphere soil bacterial community. Therefore, understanding plant-soil-microbial interactions, especially the strength of microbial interactions, mediated by root exudates is essential. A short-term experiment was conducted under drought and salt stress to investigate the interaction between root exudates and Nitraria tangutorum rhizosphere bacterial communities. We found that drought and salt stre

Recent progress in plant nutrition research: cross-talk between nutrients, plant physiology and soil microorganisms.

Mineral nutrients taken up from the soil become incorporated into a variety of important compounds with structural and physiological roles in plants. We summarize how plant nutrients are linked to many metabolic pathways, plant hormones and other biological processes. We also focus on nutrient uptake, describing plant-microbe interactions, plant exudates, root architecture, transporters and their applications. Plants need to survive in soils with mineral concentrations that vary widely. Describing the relationships between nutrients and biological processes will enable us to understand the mol

Heterogeneous nutrient supply modulates root exudation and accumulation of medicinally valuable compounds in Artemisia annua and Hypericum perforatum.

Plants have evolved complex mechanisms to adapt to nutrient-deficient environments, including stimulating lateral root proliferation into local soil patches with high nutrient content in response to heterogeneous nutrient distribution. Despite the widespread occurrence of this phenomenon in soil, the effect of heterogeneous nutrient distribution on the accumulation of secondary compounds in plant biomass and their exudation by roots remains largely unknown. This study aims to fill this critical knowledge gap by investigating how deficiency and unequal distributions of nitrogen (N), phosphorus

In vitro assessment of the efficacy of protein exudates from seeds against Haemonchus contortus.

Nematodes develop resistance to the most common commercially available drugs. The aim of this study was to identify and evaluate the action of protein exudates from Mimosa caesalpiniifolia, Leucaena leucocephala, Acacia mangium, and Stylosanthes capitata seeds on the gastrointestinal nematode Haemonchus contortus. The exuded proteins were precipitated, dialyzed, lyophilized, and assessed for their effect on egg hatching and artificial larval exsheathment inhibition. Proteome analysis of the protein extracts was also performed. Although no egg-hatching inhibition was observed, all exudates show

Nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization negatively affects strigolactone production and exudation in sorghum.

Strigolactones (SLs) are essential host recognition signals for both root parasitic plants and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, and SLs or their metabolites function as a novel class of plant hormones regulating shoot and root architecture. Our previous study indicated that nitrogen (N) deficiency as well as phosphorus (P) deficiency in sorghum enhanced root content and exudation of 5-deoxystrigol, one of the major SLs produced by sorghum. In the present study, we examined how N and P fertilization affects SL production and exudation in sorghum plants subjected to short- (5 days) or long-term (10

Root exudation patterns of contrasting rice (Oryza sativa L.) lines in response to P limitation.

Rice exudation patterns changed in response to P deficiency. Higher exudation rates were associated with lower biomass production. Total carboxylate exudation rates mostly decreased under P-limiting conditions. Within the rhizosphere, root exudates are believed to play an important role in plant phosphorus (P) acquisition. This could be particularly beneficial in upland rice production where P is often limited. However, knowledge gaps remain on how P deficiency shapes quality and quantity of root exudation in upland rice genotypes. We therefore investigated growth, plant P uptake, and root exu

Coordinated attenuation of oxidative stress metabolism and alterations of root exudates in maize (Zea mays L.) induced by Streptomyces rhizobacteria.

Interactions between plants and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are critically important for the healthy development of plants. Several Streptomyces species stand out as PGPR and biological control agents. This study evaluated the effects of the interaction between maize plants and four Streptomyces strains on oxidative stress metabolism and root exudate profiles. Plants treated with strains CLV16, CLV95, CLV104, and CLV179 showed a marked reduction in antioxidant enzyme activities. In shoots, ascorbate peroxidase activity decreased by up to 99% at 15 days compared to control, whil

A tale for two roles: Root-secreted methyl ferulate inhibits P. nicotianae and enriches the rhizosphere Bacillus against black shank disease in tobacco.

BACKGROUND: Root exudates serve as chemical signaling molecules that regulate rhizosphere interactions and control soil-borne diseases. The interactions between plants and the soil microbiome play dynamic and crucial roles in regulating the resistance of plants to biotic stress. However, the specific roles of many root exudates in plant pathogens remain unclear. The root exudate methyl ferulate, a naturally occurring and relatively non-toxic antifungal agent, has been applied to control postharvest pathogens and preserve foodstuffs and has not been used in plant disease control. RESULTS: This

Inhibitory effects of components from root exudates of Welsh onion against root knot nematodes.

Root-knot nematodes (RKNs; Meloidogyne spp.) are obligate endoparasites that infect many crops and cause severe yield losses. In this research, we studied the effect of Welsh onion, grown as a companion plant, on the resistance of cucumber plants to RKN infection and analyzed the most abundant components of Welsh onion root exudates. The results showed that, when grown with Welsh onion as a companion plant, cucumber roots had 77.0% fewer root knots and egg masses than the control cucumber roots. Welsh onion root exudates were collected and extracted with chloroform, ethyl ether, n-butanol and

The role of root exuded low molecular weight organic anions in facilitating petroleum hydrocarbon degradation: current knowledge and future directions.

Rhizoremediation is a bioremediation technique whereby enhanced microbial degradation of organic contaminants occurs within the plant root zone (rhizosphere). It is considered an effective and affordable 'green technology' for remediating soils contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs). This paper critically reviews the potential role of root exuded compounds in rhizoremediation, with emphasis on commonly exuded low molecular weight aliphatic organic acid anions (carboxylates). The extent to which remediation is achieved shows wide disparity among plant species. Therefore, plant selectio

GDSL LIPASE1 modulates plant immunity through feedback regulation of ethylene signaling.

Ethylene is a key signal in the regulation of plant defense responses. It is required for the expression and function of GDSL LIPASE1 (GLIP1) in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), which plays an important role in plant immunity. Here, we explore molecular mechanisms underlying the relationship between GLIP1 and ethylene signaling by an epistatic analysis of ethylene response mutants and GLIP1-overexpressing (35S:GLIP1) plants. We show that GLIP1 expression is regulated by ethylene signaling components and, further, that GLIP1 expression or application of petiole exudates from 35S:GLIP1 plants

Effects of Magnesium Imbalance on Root Growth and Nutrient Absorption in Different Genotypes of Vegetable Crops.

Magnesium (Mg) plays a crucial role in crop growth, but how Mg supply level affects root growth and nutrient absorption in vegetable crops with different genotypes has not been sufficiently investigated. In this study, the responses of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) and cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) crops to different levels of Mg supply were explored. Four levels of Mg treatment (i.e., 0.2, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 mmol/L) were applied under hydroponic conditions, denoted as Mg0.2, Mg1, Mg2, and Mg3, respectively. The results showed that with increasing Mg levels, the plant biomass, root growth, and n

Hyphosphere interactions: P-solubilizing fungi modulate AMF phosphatase activity and mycorrhizal symbiosis via exudate-mediated communication.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) form symbiotic associations with plant roots, enhancing water and nutrient absorption. Phosphate-solubilizing fungi (PSF) can solubilize and mineralize phosphorus, an essential nutrient with low bioavailability, and eventually interact with AMF. However, the understanding of how they interact in the hyphosphere, where root influence is absent, remains limited. Furthermore, the effect of PSF on the phosphatase activity of AMF, related to the P efficiency in acquisition and utilization, within the hyphosphere and mycorrhizosphere zones, remains unclear. Metabolism of hemicelluloses by root-associated Bacteroidota species.

Bacteroidota species are enriched in the plant microbiome and provide several beneficial functions for their host, including disease suppression. Determining the mechanisms that enable bacteroidota to colonise plant roots may therefore provide opportunities for enhancing crop production through microbiome engineering. By focusing on nutrient acquisition mechanisms, we discovered Bacteroidota species lack high affinity ATP-binding cassette transporters common in other plant-associated bacteria for capturing simple carbon exudates. Instead, bacteroidota possess TonB-dependent transporters predic
