Multifunctional Biological Activity Assessment of Plant-Derived Nanovesicles from Arugula Leaves: In Vitro and In Vivo Studies.

Plant-derived vesicles (PDVs) represent an emerging class of naturally bioformulated nanocarriers with potential nutraceutical and therapeutic applications. In this study, the multifunctional biological activity of PDVs obtained from Eruca sativa leaves (arugula leaf vesicles, ALVs) was investigated both in vitro and in vivo. In differentiated Caco-2 and HepG2 cells, ALVs exhibited significant antioxidant activity, being rich in polyphenols and organic acids, by reducing intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and modulating key metabolic regulators. ALVs upregulated SREBP-2, LDLR, and pho

Determination of cathinone and cathine in Khat plant material by LC-MS/MS: Fresh vs. dried leaves.

The consumption of Khat leaves represents an ancient kind of drug abuse mainly observed in Eastern Africa and the Arab Peninsula among adult men. For this purpose, the leaves are directly collected from the shrub "Catha edulis" prior to extensive chewing process. Seizures in Europe are rare, since the leaves have to undergo quick transportation: After a short period of time, the harvested leaves decompose and suffer in decrease of concentration of the active ingredient cathinone, which makes long term transportation difficult. As an alternative, plant material can be dried to increase life per

Pesticide residues in non-primary edible plant parts: Regulatory considerations and dietary risk assessment of guava leaves.

Rising consumption of non-primary edible plant parts is creating previously underaddressed pesticide residue and dietary exposure concerns. Guava leaves are widely consumed as herbal infusions and incorporated into pharmaceutical and food products. However, intensive pesticide use during cultivation may result in residue accumulation in leaves and derived products, raising potential public health concerns. This study investigated the occurrence and levels of multi-class pesticide residues in eleven dried guava leaf samples (branded and non-branded) and four guava-containing pharmaceutical prep

A Simple and Reproducible ImageJ Workflow for Measuring Areas of Irregularly Shaped Necrotic Lesions on Plant Leaves.

Accurately quantifying the areas of necrotic lesions on plant leaves is essential for evaluating plant-pathogen interactions and disease resistance. Although digital image analysis methods using ImageJ are widely employed, they often require case-specific optimization and may not be readily applicable across different experimental conditions. Furthermore, many studies have used ImageJ for lesion measurement without providing methodological details, which limits reproducibility. Here, we present a simple, step-by-step ImageJ workflow for measuring irregular necrotic lesions using a standard per

Evidence of copper (nano)formulation biotransformations triggered by Botrytis cinerea on grapevine leaves for targeted plant protection.

The present work aimed at unravelling if fungal inoculation on grapevine leaves could trigger the dissolution of foliarly deposited Cu (nano)formulations, and how this would impact Cu translocation in planta. Leaves of grapevine seedlings were exposed to 3.3 μg of Cu (5 μg cm-2). Formulations of contrasting solubilities (micro-sized conventional Bordeaux mixture, CuO-nanoparticles (CuO-NPs), and CuSO4) were applied to grapevine leaves, followed by the inoculation of Botrytis cinerea spores on top of the deposited Cu formulations. Nine days after Cu deposition, and six days post inoculation, Cu

Plant Growth-Promoting Potential of Colletotrichum sp. Isolated from Ocimum basilicum L. Leaves: A Broad-Spectrum Evaluation.

The primary objective of this study was to assess the growth-promoting potential of Colletotrichum sp. as a broad-spectrum plant inoculant and to investigate its applicability beyond its natural host range. Out of ten endophytes isolated from Ocimum basilicum, only four were reported for IAA production and among them, Colletotrichum sp. was chosen for further investigation due to its higher IAA production. Highest production of IAA was observed by providing Czapek dox broth with dextrose as carbon source, ammonium sulphate as nitrogen source at pH 7 and 32 °C. The crude fungal extract from Col

High-throughput direct profiling of natural products in plant leaves using ambient ionization high-resolution mass spectrometry.

Plant leaves contain natural products that may have nutritional and medicinal values. In this work, a modified ambient ion source of angled direct analysis in real time (aDART) and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) was used for direct surface analysis of different plant leaves. Untreated leaves, leaves with the wax layer removed, and leaf imprints were all successfully analyzed by aDART-HRMS in min, observing abundant natural product information including esters, amino acids, saccharides, flavonoids, alkaloids, alcohols, and ketones/aldehydes. Different plant samples have their unique f

iTRAQ-Based Proteomics Analysis of Response to Solanum tuberosum Leaves Treated with the Plant Phytotoxin Thaxtomin A.

Thaxtomin A (TA) is a phytotoxin secreted by Streptomyces scabies that causes common scab in potatoes. However, the mechanism of potato proteomic changes in response to TA is barely known. In this study, the proteomic changes in potato leaves treated with TA were determined using the Isobaric Tags for Relative and Absolute Quantitation (iTRAQ) technique. A total of 693 proteins were considered as differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) following a comparison of leaves treated with TA and sterile water (as a control). Among the identified DEPs, 460 and 233 were upregulated and downregulated, r

Study of anti-inflammatory activity in the leaves of Nyctanthes arbor tristis Linn.--an Indian medicinal plant.

Nyctanthes arbor tristis Linn. (Harsingar) is widely used as a decoction in the Ayurvedic system of medicine for treatment of sciatica and arthritis, but it has not yet been screened scientifically. In the present study, the water soluble portion of the alcoholic extract of the leaves of Nyctanthes arbor tristis (NAT) was screened for the presence of anti-inflammatory activity. NAT inhibited the acute inflammatory oedema produced by different phlogistic agents, viz. carrageenin, formalin, histamine, 5-hydroxytryptamine and hyaluronidase in the hindpaw of rats. The acute inflammatory swelling i

Whole-plant hydraulic integration is linked to multiscale anatomical coordination in evergreen broad-leaved trees.

Whole-plant hydraulic strategies depend on coordinated hydraulic structure and function across organs. However, how hydraulic safety, efficiency and water storage are integrated across the whole plant and linked to multiscale xylem anatomy remains poorly understood. We quantified hydraulic traits in leaves, stems, and coarse roots of 12 dominant tree species from a northern tropical evergreen broad-leaved forest. We also characterised their xylem anatomy at pit, vessel and tissue scales. Coarse roots were more vulnerable to embolism than stems and leaves, but had higher theoretical hydraulic c

Submerged leaves of live indoor foliage plants adsorb H1N1 influenza virus from suspension.

Control of hazardous indoor particles using plants has attracted interest due to the increasing worldwide air pollution and spread of pandemic-causing viruses. However, the interaction between human pathogenic viruses (HPVs) and live plants has not been examined largely due to issues in detecting tiny amounts of infectious viruses in a carrier (such as an aerosol) and the lack of suitable examination methods. In this study, as a novel evaluation method, the effect of submerged leaves of live plants on HPVs in water was examined, using the H1N1 influenza virus as a model. Selected plant foliage

Antigenic activity of nonpollen parts (leaves and stems) of allergenic plants (Parietaria judaica and Dactylis glomerata).

In patients with respiratory allergy to pollen it is common to correlate the onset, duration and intensity of clinical symptoms with the count of atmospheric allergenic pollen grains. Pollen counts, however, may not reflect the total airborne allergen exposure since previous data suggest that pollen allergens may also be carried in microaerosol suspensions. These microdroplets may penetrate deeply into the airways, where pollen grains are too large to penetrate, eventually inducing asthma. The origin of these allergenic aerosols is still uncertain. We investigated whether antigenic activity is

DP-MaizeTrack: a software for tracking the number of maize plants and leaves information from UAV image.

In modern agricultural production, accurate monitoring of maize growth and leaf counting is crucial for precision management and crop breeding optimization. Current UAV-based methods for detecting maize seedlings and leaves often face challenges in achieving high accuracy due to issues such as low spatial-resolution, complex field environments, variations in plant scale and orientation. To address these challenges, this study develops an integrated detection and visualization software, DP-MaizeTrack, which incorporates the DP-YOLOv8 model based on YOLOv8. The DP-YOLOv8 model integrates three k

Calcium localization in lettuce leaves with and without tipburn: comparison of controlled-environment and field-grown plants.

An electron microprobe was used to determine tissue concentrations of Ca across 20-mm-long leaves of 'Green Lakes' crisphead lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) with and without tipburn injury. Concentrations within the fifth and 14th leaves, counted from the cotyledons, from plants grown under controlled-environment conditions were compared to concentrations within similar leaves obtained from plants grown under field conditions. Only the 14th leaf from plants grown under controlled-environment conditions developed tipburn. Injured areas on these leaves had Ca concentrations as low as 0.2 to 0.3 mg g
