Snake venoms are rich sources of molecules with pharmacological potential, with approximately 90% of their composition consisting of proteins and peptides responsible for their biological activities. These proteins are classified as enzymatic or non-enzymatic. Enzymatic proteins function as catalysts in regulatory chemical reactions, whereas non-enzymatic proteins, despite lacking catalytic activity, play essential roles in physiological processes. Lectins are non-enzymatic proteins of non-immune origin characterized by carbohydrate- and glycoprotein-binding domains, enabling their ability to

Lectins are non-immunogenic, non-enzymatic proteins distributed across microbes, fungi, plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates. Their carbohydrate-binding specificity forms the basis of diverse biomedical applications, particularly in immunomodulation, prognosis, and diagnosis. Among these, fungal lectins have gained attention as promising biomolecules, although they remain less explored than their plant and animal counterparts. Several fungal lectins, including Aleuria aurantia lectin (AAL), Laetiporus sulphureus lectin (LSL), Marasmius oreades agglutinin (MOA), Agrocybe aegerita galectin (AA

Lectins are carbohydrate-binding proteins with diverse biological functions, including antitumor and immunomodulatory activities. Taro (Colocasia esculenta) tubers, commonly consumed in cooked form, are a potential bioactive lectin source; however, the effects of thermal processing on their functionality remain insufficiently understood. This study investigated the biological profiles of lectins fractionated from both raw and boiled Japanese taro tubers (JTT). Lectins were fractionated using carboxymethyl-Sepharose and diethylaminoethyl-Sepharose chromatography, depending on their solubility f

Four years after its outbreak, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) remains a global challenge for human health. At its surface, SARS-CoV-2 features numerous extensively glycosylated spike proteins. This glycan coat supports virion docking and entry into host cells and at the same time renders the virus less susceptible to neutralizing antibodies. Given the high genetic plasticity of SARS-CoV-2 and the rapid emergence of immune escape variants, targeting the glycan shield by carbohydrate-binding agents emerges as a promising strategy. However, the potential of carbohydr

We investigated the occurrence of endogenous lectins in the mouse submandibular gland using anti-lectin antibodies that selectively bound the respective hapten lectins which have formed a complex with the appropriate hapten sugars and endogenous lectins. Findings supported the idea that endogenous lectins could interact with sugar residues and perform several roles including packaging, immobilization and transport of glucidic material. A functional meaning in the defence from some pathogenous agents was also postulated. Animal lectins seem to play roles related to their localization like occur

Biotechnology uses lectin genes to transfect into crop plants for protection against insects and nematodes. On the other hand, the information is limited on lectin-binding properties of cells in the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, binding of a panel of FITC-labelled plant lectins to gastrointestinal cells of the rat was studied. In the stomach, cytoplasmic staining of parietal cells by PHA appeared to be due to glycoproteins attached to the tubulovesicles. PNA also stained the parietal cells, but only in the isthmus and neck regions, reacting with desialylated glycoproteins. WGA bound to th

The synthesis of a collection of 33 xylosylated and core-fucosylated N-glycans found only in nonmammalian organisms such as plants and parasitic helminths has been achieved by employing a highly convergent chemo-enzymatic approach. The influence of these core modifications on the interaction with plant lectins, with the human lectin DC-SIGN (Dendritic Cell-Specific Intercellular adhesion molecule-3-Grabbing Nonintegrin), and with serum antibodies from schistosome-infected individuals was studied. Core xylosylation markedly reduced or completely abolished binding to several mannose-binding plan

Recombinant antigen production in plants is a safe and economically sound strategy for vaccine development, particularly for oral/mucosal vaccination, but subunit vaccines usually suffer from weak immunogenicity and require adjuvants that escort the antigens, target them to relevant sites and/or activate antigen-presenting cells for elicitation of protective immunity. Genetic fusions of antigens with bacterial adjuvants as the B subunit of the cholera toxin have been successful in inducing protective immunity of plant-made vaccines. In addition, several plant compounds, mainly plant defensive

The assessment of blood group antigens is critical to transfusion medicine practice, as accurately identifying these antigens in both donors and patients is key to ensuring safe transfusions. Although plant lectins have long been used to aid in the identification of many carbohydrate-based blood group antigens, recent research has shown that a family of mammalian proteins known as galectins can also recognize and bind to blood group antigens. However, determining the fine specificity of lectins toward these antigens is challenging because of the structural complexity of the antigens and past l

Plant lectins are carbohydrate-binding proteins with diverse biological functions and growing biomedical relevance due to their ability to recognize specific glycan structures. Here, we report the high-resolution crystallographic structure of a lectin from D. altissima seeds (DAL), resolved by X-ray diffraction at 2.21 Å (PDB ID: 7LJG). The structure reveals a homodimeric fold consistent with other lectins from the Dioclea genus, reinforcing its conserved molecular architecture. Other lectins reported within the Dioclea genus share the conserved β-sandwich fold typical of this group, while DAL

Entry of Zaire ebolavirus (EBOV) into a host cell is a complex process requiring interactions between the viral glycoproteins (GPs) and cellular factors. These entry factors are cell-specific and can include cell surface lectins and phosphatidylserine receptors. Niemann-Pick type C1 is critical to the late stage of the entry process. Entry has been demonstrated to be enhanced by interactions between the virion and surface-expressed lectins, which interact with carbohydrate moieties attached to the GP. In addition, soluble lectins, including mannose-binding lectin, can enhance entry in vitro. H

Craniopharyngioma is a rare benign tumour originating from Rathke's pouch. This paper reports a tumour case studied with a set of markers defining protein-carbohydrate recognition. Expression of endogenous lectins and their reactive glycoligands is under differentiation-dependent control in many cell types. These parameters can be related to the degree of cell differentiation in tumours. Therefore, the expression patterns of endogenous lectins, namely galectins-1, -3, and -7, in the craniopharyngioma case were determined. Galectins-1 and -3 were also used to reveal glycoconjugates in cells and

New enzyme delivery technologies are required for treatment of lysosomal storage disorders with significant pathologies associated with the so-called "hard-to-treat" tissues and organs. Genetic deficiencies in the GLB1 gene encoding acid β-galactosidase lead to GM1-gangliosidosis or Morquio B, lysosomal diseases with predominant disease manifestation associated with the central nervous system or skeletal system, respectively. Current lysosomal ERTs are delivered into cells based on receptor-mediated endocytosis and do not effectively address several hard-to-treat organs including those critica

Plant receptor-like protein kinases are thought to be involved in various cellular processes mediated by signal transduction pathways. There are about 45 lectin receptor kinases in Arabidopsis, but only a few have been studied. Here, we investigated the effect of the disruption and overexpression of a plasma membrane-localized L-type lectin-like protein kinase 1, AtLPK1 (At4g02410), on plant responses to abiotic and biotic stress. Expression of AtLPK1 was strongly induced by abscisic acid, methyl jasmonate, salicylic acid and stress treatments. Overexpression of AtLPK1 in Arabidopsis resulted
