Nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) are gasotransmitters, which are involved in almost all plant physiological and stress-related processes. With its antioxidant regulatory properties, NO on its own ameliorates plant stress, while H2S, a foul-smelling gas, has differential effects. Recent studies have shown that these signaling molecules are involved in intertwined pathway networks. This is due to the contrasting effects of NO and H2S depending on cell type, subcellular compartment, and redox status, as well as the flux and dosage of NO and H2S in different plant species and cellular

Volatile communication plays an important role in mediating the interactions between plants, aphids, and other organisms in the environment. In response to aphid infestation, many plants initiate indirect defenses through the release of volatiles that attract ladybugs, parasitoid wasps, and other aphid-consuming predators. Aphid-induced volatile release in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana requires the jasmonate signaling pathway. Volatile release is also induced by infection with aphid-transmitted viruses. Consistent with mathematical models of optimal transmission, viruses that are acquir

BACKGROUND: Manganese (Mn) is an essential micronutrient that is phytotoxic under certain edaphic and climatic conditions. Multiple edaphic factors regulate Mn redox status and therefore its phytoavailability, and multiple environmental factors including light intensity and temperature interact with Mn phytotoxicity. The complexity of these interactions coupled with substantial genetic variation in Mn tolerance have hampered the recognition of Mn toxicity as an important stress in many natural and agricultural systems.
SCOPE: Conflicting theories have been advanced regarding the mechanism of

The density and architecture of leaf veins determine the network and efficiency of water transport within laminae and resultant leaf gas exchange and vary widely among plant species. Leaf hydraulic conductance ( Kleaf) can be regulated by vein architecture in conjunction with the water channel protein aquaporin. However, our understanding of how leaf veins and aquaporins affect leaf hydraulics and stomatal conductance ( gs) remains poor. By inducing blockage of the major veins and inhibition of aquaporin activity using HgCl2, we examined the effects of major veins and aquaporins on Kleaf and g

Plants are susceptible to several biotic and abiotic stressors, including pathogens, extreme salinity, temperature, and drought. Continuous exposure to these conditions activates complex molecular mechanisms in plants. These include stress-signaling pathways mediated by phytohormones such as cytokins, salicylic acid, auxins, abscisic acid, jasmonic acid, and ethylene. These signaling molecules further interact with cellular pathways regulating stress-responsive gene expression through transcription factors such as DREBs, MYBs, bZIPs, and NACs. Key cellular pathways include mitogen-activated pr

BACKGROUND: Plant absorption of ultraviolet (UV) radiation can result in multiple deleterious effects to plant tissues. As a result, plants have evolved an array of strategies to protect themselves from UV radiation, particularly in the UV-B range (280-320 nm). A common plant response to UV exposure is investment in phenolic compounds that absorb damaging wavelengths of light. However, the inverse phenomenon - plant reflectance of UV to protect plant tissues - has not previously been explored. In a paired experiment, we expose half of our sample (N = 108) of insect-pollinated plants of the cul

Anaesthetics affect not only humans and animals but also plants. Plants exposed to certain anaesthetics lose their ability to respond adequately to various stimuli such as touch, injury or light. Available results indicate that anaesthetics modulate ion channel activities in plants, e.g. Ca2+ influx. The word anaesthesia means loss of sensation. Plants, as all living creatures, can also sense their environment and they are susceptible to anaesthesia. Although some anaesthetics are often known as drugs with well-defined target to their animal/human receptors, some other are promiscuous in their

In 1930, Bortels showed that molybdenum is necessary for nitrogen fixation in Acetobacter, and in 1939 Arnon and Stout reported that molybdenum is essential for life in higher plants. Nitrogenase is the nitrogen-fixing enzyme complex, while nitrate reductase requires molybdenum for its activity. Molybdenum occurs in the earth crust with an abundance of 1.0-1.4 mg/kg. The molybdenum content of the vegetation is determined by the amount of this element in the soil and its pH-value. The weathering soils of granite, porphyry, gneiss and Rotliegendes produce a molybdenum-rich vegetation. Significan

Sugars, vital metabolites for cellular health, play a central role in regulating diverse intracellular pathways that control plant growth and development. They also enhance stress responses, enabling plants to endure adverse conditions. A few intracellular molecules involved in sensing the intracellular sugar content and concomitantly facilitating appropriate response (growth or survivability) are known as sugar sensors. Among the numerous sugar sensors identified in plants, this review focuses on four extensively studied sugar sensors, namely hexokinase (HXK), Sucrose non-fermenting 1-related

Plant latex and other exudates are saps that are exuded from the points of plant damage caused either mechanically or by insect herbivory. Although many (ca. 10%) of plant species exude latex or exudates, and although the defensive roles of plant latex against herbivorous insects have long been suggested by several studies, the detailed roles and functions of various latex ingredients, proteins and chemicals, in anti-herbivore plant defenses have not been well documented despite the wide occurrence of latex in the plant kingdom. Recently, however, substantial progress has been made. Several la

Radiation hormesis refers to the beneficial biological effects of low-dose ionizing radiation (LDIR) that do not conform to linear-no-threshold or threshold models. Ionizing radiation has been extensively used in the bioindustry for mutation induction, food sterilization, and structural modification of natural compounds. Despite its industrial potential, the application of LDIR-induced hormetic effects remains limited owing to insufficient scientific evidence, reproducibility concerns, and policy considerations related to radiation safety management. This review examines representative cases o

Fruits are unique to flowering plants and confer a selective advantage as they facilitate seed maturation and dispersal. In fleshy fruits, development and ripening are associated with numerous structural, biochemical, and physiological changes, including modifications in the general appearance, texture, flavor, and aroma, which ultimately convert the immature fruit into a considerably more attractive and palatable structure for seed dispersal by animals. Treatment with exogenous nitric oxide (NO) delays fruit ripening, prevents chilling damage, promotes disease resistance, and enhances the nut

Physiological aspects of acidity stress in plants (synonymous with H(+) rhizotoxicity or low-pH stress) have long been a focus of research, in particular with respect to acidic soils where aluminium and H(+) rhizotoxicities often co-occur. However, toxic H(+) and Al(3+) elicit different response mechanisms in plants, and it is important to consider their effects separately. The primary aim of this review was to provide the current state of knowledge regarding the genetics of the specific reactions to low-pH stress in growing plants. A comparison of the results gleaned from quantitative trait l

Climate change is intensifying the frequency and co-occurrence of abiotic and biotic stresses, posing significant challenges to global crop productivity and stability. Conventional approaches based on single-stress responses are increasingly insufficient for addressing complex field environments where plants experience multiple simultaneous stresses. This review synthesizes current knowledge on plant physiological responses, microbiome interactions, and emerging technological interventions to develop an integrative framework for climate-resilient agriculture. It highlights how stress perceptio

Cold is a major stressor, which limits plant growth and development in many parts of the world, especially in the temperate climate zones. A large number of experimental studies has demonstrated that not only acclimation and entrainment but also the experience of single short stress events of various abiotic or biotic kinds (priming stress) can improve the tolerance of plants to chilling temperatures. This process, called priming, depends on a stress "memory". It does not change cold sensitivity per se but beneficially modifies the response to cold and can last for days, months, or even longer

WRKY transcription factors are among the largest families of transcriptional regulators. In this review, their pivotal role in modulating various signal transduction pathways during biotic and abiotic stresses is discussed. Transcription factors (TFs) are important constituents of plant signaling pathways that define plant responses against biotic and abiotic stimuli besides playing a role in response to internal signals which coordinate different interacting partners during developmental processes. WRKY TFs, deriving their nomenclature from their signature DNA-binding sequence, represent one

The karst region of Southwest China is characterized by extensive bedrock exposure and limited soil cover, forming a dual structure of soil and water. Such unique geological background makes epikarst water a critical water source for plants, while bedrock lithology is the key factor driving the development and water storage capacity of epikarst zone. Under the combined impacts of extreme climate events and frequent karstic drought, the sustainability of vegetation restoration faces severe challenges. It is crucial to clarify the influences of lithology-regulated water supply on plant adaptatio

Plants often face a variety of abiotic stresses, which affects them negatively and lead to yield loss. The antioxidant system efficiently removes excessive reactive oxygen species and maintains redox homeostasis in plants. With better understanding of these protective mechanisms, recently the concept of hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) and its role in cell signaling has become the center of attention. H2 S has been recognized as a third gasotransmitter and a potent regulator of growth and development processes such as germination, maturation, senescence and defense mechanism in plants. Because of its g
