Integrative transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses of the drought response mechanisms of stem spines in desert plants from the Ebinur Lake.

Stem spines are key adaptive organs in desert plants, playing a critical role in resisting drought stress and maintaining plant survival. However, the molecular mechanisms governing their responses to drought remain insufficiently characterized. We investigated the stem spines of two representative halophytic shrubs from the Ebinur Lake Wetland desert region, Alhagi sparsifolia and Nitraria tangutorum, under a natural drought gradient: mild drought (Mi), 15.51% ± 0.61%; moderate drought (Mo), 8.87% ± 0.77%; severe drought (S), 3.34% ± 0.26%), and integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analy

Plant and animal-derived fusion nanovesicles rescue inflammation-compromised osteogenic potential of periodontal ligament stem cells.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the supporting tissues of the teeth and has emerged as a global public health issue. Current therapies primarily address pathogenic factors and alleviate symptoms, with limited options available for complete restoration and reconstruction of already absorbed periodontal bone tissue. In this study, we developed a nanotherapeutic strategy utilizing fusion nanovesicles (FVs) to modulate the inflammatory microenvironment and create a regenerative niche for periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs), which play a crucial role in periodontal ti

Companion plants and straw mulch reduce cabbage stem flea beetle (Psylliodes chrysocephala) damage on oilseed rape.

BACKGROUND: Plant diversification, especially sowing crops with the addition of companion plants has been demonstrated as a suitable practice to increase insect pest control in multiple cropping systems. Since the ban on use of neonicotinoid seed treatments in oilseed rape (OSR), the harvested area has reduced significantly in Europe, mainly because of the damage caused by cabbage stem flea beetle (Psylliodes chrysocephala). Several companion plants such as legumes and other species of Brassicaceae have been reported as potential companions for OSR but robust evaluation of their efficiency to

CLAVATA3 dodecapeptide modified CdTe nanoparticles: a biocompatible quantum dot probe for in vivo labeling of plant stem cells.

CLAVATA3 (CLV3) dodecapeptides function in plant stem cell maintenance, but CLV3 function in cell-cell communication remains less clear. Here, we coupled CLV3 dodecapeptides to synthesized CdTe nanoparticles to track their bioactivity on stem cells in the root apical meristem. To achieve this, we first synthesized CdTe quantum dots (QDs) using a one-pot method, and then evaluated the cytotoxicity of the QDs in BY-2 cells. The results showed that QDs in plant cells must be used at low concentrations and for short treatment time. To make biocompatible probes to track stem cell fate, we conjugate

Plant stem inspired gradient structured composite aerogel enabling green EMI shielding, radar stealth and thermal management.

With the rapid iteration from 5G to 6G technology and the advanced integration of high-power electronic devices, electromagnetic interference (EMI) has emerged as a critical bottleneck restricting equipment reliability and the stealth performance of military hardware. Conventional shielding materials not only readily cause secondary pollution because of their high surface reflectivity, but also fall short of simultaneously meeting multiple requirements, including lightweight design, thermal management and infrared stealth. To address these challenges, inspired by the porous structure of plant

Production of bioactive cytokines using plant expression system for cardiovascular cell differentiation from human pluripotent stem cells.

Bioactive cytokines such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and Activin A are critical for the differentiation of stem cells into vascular endothelial cells and cardiomyocytes. However, production of the cytokines using conventional Escherichia coli or mammalian cell expression systems carries risks of immunogenicity and viral contamination. In this study, we developed a VEGF and Activin A plant expression system and demonstrated that plant-expressed VEGF and Activin A are as active as their commercial counterparts. We also showed that plant-expressed VEGF and Activin A are as effici

Two plant immune inducers achieve comparable field control of the rice stem borer through distinct physiological pathways.

BACKGROUND: Plant immune inducers are promising tools for sustainable pest management because they influence both target pests and natural enemies. Previous studies showed that ATL (3% amino-oligosaccharide +3% Alternaria tenuissima activating protein) attracts the egg parasitoid Trichogramma japonicum, whereas AOS repels the parasitoid, although neither inducer directly affects adult behaviour of the rice stem borer (RSB, C. suppressalis). Whether these contrasting ecological effects influence field efficacy and larval physiology has remained unclear. RESULTS: Field experiments demonstrated

Plant stem and leaf segmentation and phenotypic parameter extraction using neural radiance fields and lightweight point cloud segmentation networks.

High-quality 3D reconstruction and accurate 3D organ segmentation of plants are crucial prerequisites for automatically extracting phenotypic traits. In this study, we first extract a dense point cloud from implicit representations, which derives from reconstructing the maize plants in 3D by using the Nerfacto neural radiance field model. Second, we propose a lightweight point cloud segmentation network (PointSegNet) specifically for stem and leaf segmentation. This network includes a Global-Local Set Abstraction (GLSA) module to integrate local and global features and an Edge-Aware Feature Pr

Radiation hazards of the Ukraine nuclear power plants: how can international blood and marrow stem cell transplant societies help?

Any conflict in countries that process nuclear power plants raises concerns of the potential radiation injuries to the people in that region and beyond such as the current conflict in Ukraine. International healthcare organizations and societies should prepare for the potential scenarios of nuclear incidents. The Worldwide Network for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (WBMT) and its members, have recent experience preparing for this type of events such as the Fukushima incident in 2011. In this article, we discuss the risks of radiation exposure, current guidelines, and scientific evidence on h

Genome-Wide Association Study in Rice Revealed a Novel Gene in Determining Plant Height and Stem Development, by Encoding a WRKY Transcription Factor.

Semi-dwarfism is a main agronomic trait in crop breeding. In this study, we performed genome-wide association study (GWAS) and identified a new quantitative trait nucleotide (QTN) for rice shoot length. The peak QTN (C/T) was located in the first coding region of a group III WRKY transcription factor OsWRKY21 (LOC_Os01g60640). Interestingly, further haplotype analysis showed that C/T difference only existed in the indica group but not in the japonica group, resulting in significant differences in plant height among the different indica rice varieties. OsWRKY21 was expressed in embryo, radicle,

Secreted Effector Proteins of Poplar Leaf Spot and Stem Canker Pathogen Sphaerulina musiva Manipulate Plant Immunity and Contribute to Virulence in Diverse Ways.

Fungal effectors play critical roles in manipulating plant immune responses and promoting colonization. Sphaerulina musiva is a heterothallic ascomycete fungus that causes Septoria leaf spot and stem canker disease in poplar (Populus spp.) plantations. This disease can result in premature defoliation, branch and stem breakage, increased mortality, and plantation failure. However, little is known about the interaction between S. musiva and poplar. Previous work predicted 142 candidate secreted effector proteins in S. musiva (SmCSEPs), 19 of which were selected for further functional characteriz

Solvent fractions of selected Ethiopian medicinal plants used in traditional breast cancer treatment inhibit cancer stem cells in a breast cancer cell line.

BACKGROUND: The incidence and mortality of breast cancer in women is increasing worldwide. Breast cancer contains a subpopulation of cells known as cancer stem cells (CSCs). The CSCs are believed to be responsible for chemotherapeutic resistance and are also involved in tumor initiation, progression, evolution, and metastasis to distant sites. The present study aimed to investigate the anti-CSC potential of selected Ethiopian medicinal plants traditionally used for breast cancer treatment. METHODS: The solvent fractions of three medicinal plants (the ethyl acetate fraction of Vernonia leopold
