A hybrid deep learning framework for estimating urban tree transpiration.

Urban trees regulate urban water-energy exchange via transpiration, yet accurate estimates in urban settings remain challenging. Traditional Jarvis-type models often require frequent recalibration and can produce biased estimates when parameters vary or structural assumptions are violated. Alternatively, hybrid deep learning (DL) models that integrate data-driven approaches with process knowledge represent a promising alternative, merging the flexibility of DL with prior information from process models. Nonetheless, the effectiveness of these hybrids for estimating urban tree transpiration has

[Transpiration of Hedysarum scoparium in arid desert region of Shiyang River basin, Gansu Province].

By using heat pulse technique, an investigation on the transpiration of Hedysarum scoparium was conducted in the arid desert region of Shiyang River basin, Gansu Province. The results indicated that with increasing inserted depth of probe, the sap flow velocity in H. scoparium xylem had a trend from high to low. In the taproot with smaller diameter, the average sap flow velocity at different positions was faster, and the change range was bigger. Among the taproots with different diameters, there existed a larger difference in the magnitude of sap flux, but the change trend was similar, i. e.,

A model of bubble growth leading to xylem conduit embolism.

The dynamics of a gas bubble inside a water conduit after a cavitation event was modeled. A distinction was made between a typical angiosperm conduit with a homogeneous pit membrane and a typical gymnosperm conduit with a torus-margo pit membrane structure. For conduits with torus-margo type pits pit membrane deflection was also modeled and pit aspiration, the displacement of the pit membrane to the low pressure side of the pit chamber, was found to be possible while the emboli was still small. Concurrent with pit aspiration, the high resistance to water flow out of the conduit through the cel

Drought-Induced Mortality in Zanthoxylum planispinum var. dingtanensis Is Associated with Sap Flow Dysregulation and Narrow Hydraulic Safety Margins.

In the context of global climate change, drought events significantly impact plants, and studying the response of plant sap flow to environmental factors is of great significance for plant protection and sustainable development. This article uses the thermal pulse method to obtain trunk sap flow data, combined with real-time monitoring of environmental factor data, to compare the differences in sap flow characteristics between the subsequently deceased and surviving Zanthoxylum planispinum var. dingtanensis during a natural drought event. Additionally, the xylem vulnerability curve of Z. plani

Protein synthesis is the most sensitive process when potassium is substituted by sodium in the nutrition of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris).

Potassium ions (K(+)) and sodium ions (Na(+)) share many physical and chemical similarities. However, their interchangeability in plant nutrition is restricted. Substitution studies showed that K(+) can be replaced by Na(+) to a large extent in the nutrition of Beta vulgaris L. However, the extent of substitution without negative impacts is not unlimited. The aim of the present study was to identify the process which is most sensitive during the substitution of K(+) by Na(+) in nutrition of young sugar beet plants. We focused on transpiration, growth, and net protein synthesis. Plants were gro

Morpho-physiological traits of soybean plants in symbiosis with Gigaspora sp. and submitted to water restriction.

In agricultural production, periods in which there is a lack of water can affect the productivity of soybean crops. One alternative is the use of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), which maximize water absorption, biochemical regulation, leaf elasticity and transpiration, and water use regulation. The present study aimed to analyze the morphological and physiological traits of soybean plants associated with Gigaspora margarita and Gigaspora gigantea submitted to water restriction in nonsterilized soil. The soybean plants received 31 g of the AMF Gigaspora margarita or 46 g of Gigaspora gigant

Photosynthetic responses of corn and soybean to foliar application of salicylates.

Salicylic acid (SA) and related phenolic compounds can exert control over stomatal opening and previous work in our laboratory has shown that chronic injection of SA increases the photosynthetic rate of corn. The work reported in this paper investigated the effects of foliar applied SA, acetyl salicylic acid (ASA) and gentisic acid (GTA) on photosynthetic rates and growth of soybean (a C3 plant) and corn (a C4 plant) under greenhouse conditions. In general, the tested compounds enhanced photosynthetic rates in both soybean and corn. Stomatal conductance and transpiration were also increased. T

Citrulline and DRIP-1 protein (ArgE homologue) in drought tolerance of wild watermelon.

Drought-affected plants experience more than just desiccation of their organs due to water deficit. Plants transpire 1000 times more molecules of water than of CO2 fixed by photosynthesis in full sunlight. One effect of transpiration is to cool the leaves. Accordingly, drought brings about such multi-stresses as high temperatures, excess photoradiation and other factors that affect plant viability. Wild watermelon serves as a suitable model system to study drought responses of C3 plants, since this plant survives drought by maintaining its water content without any wilting of leaves or desicca

Clonal differences in ecophysiological responses to imposed drought in selected Eucalyptus grandis × E. urophylla hybrids.

Measuring ecophysiological responses of Eucalyptus clones grown under reduced water availability could assist in clonal selection for climate resilience. We hypothesized that clonal variation in chlorophyll a fluorescence was more readily detected than variations in leaf-level gas exchanges when 2-year-old Eucalyptus grandis W.Hill ex Maiden × Eucalyptus urophylla S.T. Blake hybrid clones (C1, C2, C3 and C4) grown under rainfed (RF) and water-restricted (WR) conditions were evaluated during dry and rainy seasons, in the morning and midday diurnal periods. The C2 clone was the most drought tole

Toxicity of 56 substances to trees.

Toxicity data of substances to higher plants is needed for the purpose of risk assessment, site evaluation, phytoremediation, and plant protection. However, the results from the most common phytotoxicity tests, like the OECD algae and Lemna test, are not necessarily valid for higher terrestrial plants. The willow tree toxicity test uses inhibition of transpiration (aside of growth and water use efficiency) of willow cuttings grown in spiked solutions or soils as end point to quantify toxicity. This overview presents results from 60 studies including 24 new unpublished experiments for 56 differ

Stomatal and leaf hydraulic conductivity responses to changing light and CO2 conditions in Phaseolus vulgaris.

Extreme conditions brought up by climate change have a negative impact on plant photosynthesis. However, characterizing and exploiting extant genetic variation in plants for structure and function could lead to the assembly of genotypes adapted to extreme environments. This could be accomplished by combining suitable structures and adaptive mechanisms. We selected two common bean genotypes from the Andean (Calima) and the Mesoamerican (Jamapa) gene pools and analyzed their leaf structural characteristics, leaf hydraulics, and stomatal responses to transient light and CO2. We used the patterns

CO2 physiological forcing mitigates climate-driven water limitation on vegetation growth and carbon uptake.

Climate-driven increases in water limitation are expected to threaten ecosystem functioning and services. However, the extent to which ecosystems are water-limited remains uncertain due to the interplay of external CO2 physiological forcing and internal adaptation mechanisms. Here, we develop a unified ecosystem limitation index that quantifies the relative limitation of water and energy on key ecosystem functions and show that climate-driven water limitation on vegetation growth and carbon uptake is effectively mitigated by CO2 physiological effects. Consequently, projected expansion of water

Thermal study of plants in a dynamic environment using thermovision.

We examined the effect of light-induced heating of leaves in wild-type (Col-0) and tmm-1 Arabidopsis plants. The results showed that the tmm-1 mutant exhibits accelerated cooling of rosettes in response to changes in light intensity, as demonstrated by thermal imaging measurements. This is evident in the time constants determined for temperature kinetics, which were reduced during the transition from light to dark. Our findings indicate that these dynamics can be reliably assessed under various light conditions. Measurements of gas exchange showed that stomatal conductance, transpiration rate,

Gas exchange and productivity responses of Panicum maximum cultivars to increasing soil potassium levels in a greenhouse study.

Potassium (K) is essential for the productivity of tropical grasses, but its optimal supply remains unclear. This study evaluated the effects of K on gas exchange, photosynthetic rate (A), forage production (FP), and root development (RP) in Panicum maximum cultivars. The experiment was conducted using a randomized block design in a 6 × 4 factorial scheme (six cultivars: Tanzânia, Quênia, Mombaça, Zuri, Massai and Tamani; and four K rates: 0, 205, 410 and 820 mg dm-3). There was interaction between cultivars and K rates for A and stomatal conductance (gs), with linear increases in A for all cu

Lower responsiveness of canopy evapotranspiration rate than of leaf stomatal conductance to open-air CO2 elevation in rice.

An elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2 ]) can reduce stomatal conductance of leaves for most plant species, including rice (Oryza sativa L.). However, few studies have quantified seasonal changes in the effects of elevated [CO2 ] on canopy evapotranspiration, which integrates the response of stomatal conductance of individual leaves with other responses, such as leaf area expansion, changes in leaf surface temperature, and changes in developmental stages, in field conditions. We conducted a field experiment to measure seasonal changes in stomatal conductance of the uppermost leaves an

Cyanide phytoremediation by water hyacinths (Eichhornia crassipes).

Although cyanide is highly toxic, it is economically attractive for extracting gold from ore bodies containing only a few grams per 1000 kg. Most of the cyanide used in industrial mining is handled without observable devastating consequences, but in informal, small-scale mining, the use is poorly regulated and the waste treatment is insufficient. Cyanide in the effluents from the latter mines could possibly be removed by the water hyacinth Eichhornia crassipes because of its high biomass production, wide distribution, and tolerance to cyanide (CN) and metals. We determined the sodium cyanide p

Organ-Specific Epidermal Bladder Cell Contribution to Quinoa's Performance.

Quinoa is a facultative halophyte capable of thriving in harsh environmental conditions. Its epidermal bladder cells (EBCs) have been suggested to play a key role in salinity tolerance. To clarify their importance, several experiments have been conducted to assess the effects of EBC removal. However, existing studies have yielded conflicting evidence, both supporting and rejecting their significance. Notably, most of these investigations have focused on leaf EBCs, despite the fact that quinoa accumulates more ions in the stem than in the leaves. To address this gap, we designed a manipulative

Stomatal density and aperture dynamics regulate drought response and yield in tomato.

In crops, key physiological traits such as transpiration, stomatal conductance, and photosynthesis are closely linked to productivity. However, these dynamic traits are often studied under steady-state conditions or modeled with limited data, failing to capture the plant's versatile responses to dynamic field conditions. We hypothesized that natural variation in stomatal morphological traits, specifically, abaxial-to-adaxial distribution and density regulate the temporal physiological response patterns in tomato introgression lines (ILs; crosses between WT, S. Pennellii, and M82 lines). We fur

Concurrent Temperature and Light Intensity Fluctuations Promote Stomatal Opening and Non-Steady State Photosynthesis.

In nature, fluctuations in light intensity (FL) are tightly coupled to rapid changes in leaf temperature (Tleaf), yet the short-term physiological effects of these concurrent drivers remain largely unresolved. Here, we combined rapid infrared induced Tleaf fluctuations with controlled step changes in light intensity for leaf gas exchange measurements to disentangle how each factor, and their interaction, affects stomatal conductance (gs) and net CO2 assimilation (A) in cucumber plants grown under constant light or FL. Modest but rapid increases in Tleaf (~3°C) alone triggered a pronounced wron
