Roles of plant-derived bioactive compounds and related microRNAs in cancer therapy.

Plant-derived bioactive compounds, often called phytochemicals, are active substances extracted from different plants. These bioactive compounds can release therapeutic potential abilities via reducing antitumor drugs side effects or directly killing cancer cells, and others also can adjust cancer initiation and progression via regulating microRNAs (miRNAs) expression, and miRNA can regulate protein-coding expression by restraining translation or degrading target mRNA. A mass of research showed that plant-derived bioactive compounds including tanshinones, astragaloside IV, berberine, ginsenosi

Irreversible electroporation with intratumoral plant virus immunotherapy induces systemic immunity in a metastatic model of pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic cancer remains highly resistant to immunotherapy, necessitating innovative strategies. This study explores a novel combination of irreversible electroporation (IRE) and plant virus-based nanoparticles to enhance immune responses in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). IRE is a non-thermal tumor ablation technique already in clinical use, but it often fails to prevent metastasis. Plant viral nanoparticles, such as cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV), have shown potent immune-stimulating properties in various cancer models. Using an immunocompetent orthotopic PDAC mouse model with liver me

Transformative potential of plant-based nanoparticles in cancer diagnosis and treatment: bridging traditional medicine and modern therapy.

Cancer is a primary global health concern, with an estimated 35.3 million cancer cases expected worldwide, representing a 76.6% increase in 2022, and 20 million by 2050, resulting from genetic mutation and environmental factors that cause uncontrolled cell growth. Other factors including smoking, unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, exposure to carcinogens, UV radiation, and aging increase DNA damage. Current cancer treatments like chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, and surgery are effective, but those have significant effects like lack of specificity, development of drug resista

Plant-Derived Extracellular Vesicles: Biogenesis, Function, and Application in Cancer Immunotherapy.

Plant-derived extracellular vesicles (PDEVs) are nanoscale, lipid bilayer-enclosed vesicles secreted by plant cells. They are widely distributed across plant tissues, including fruits, roots, stems, and leaves, and are particularly abundant in edible and medicinal plant species. This review presents a comprehensive overview of recent advances in PDEV research, focusing on their biogenesis, isolation strategies, physicochemical characterization, and cross-kingdom regulatory mechanisms. We highlight the multifaceted roles of PDEVs in anti-tumor immunity, including tumor cell suppression, immune

Phosphatidylcholine biosynthesis and its significance in bacteria interacting with eukaryotic cells.

Phosphatidylcholine (PC), a typical eukaryotic membrane phospholipid, is present in only about 10% of all bacterial species, in particular in bacteria interacting with eukaryotes. A number of studies revealed that PC plays a fundamental role in symbiotic and pathogenic microbe-host interactions. Agrobacterium tumefaciens mutants lacking PC are unable to elicit plant tumors. The human pathogens Brucella abortus and Legionella pneumophila require PC for full virulence. The plant symbionts Bradyrhizobium japonicum and Sinorhizobium meliloti depend on wild-type levels of PC to establish an efficie

Anti-cancer effects of plant extracts in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

Current treatments for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) often encounter difficulties such as local tumor recurrence, distant metastasis, drug resistance, and significant toxic side effects. Plant extracts have become important resources for the development of anti-HNSCC drugs due to their multi-target action mechanisms, abundance of bioactive components, reversal of drug resistance, and high selectivity/low toxicity. The challenges faced by plant extracts during anti-cancer clinical translation include low bioavailability, unclear mechanisms of action, complex components, and diff

Medicinal plants--old and new.

The historic role of plants in healing declined early in the twentieth century with the ascendency of synthetic drugs, even though a number of basic medical tools, such as opium, strychnine, and cocaine, are of botanical origin. In recent years, interest in natural products has been restored dramatically by the discovery of penicillin, plant-derived tranquilizers, and plant precursors of cortisone. Contrary to previous beliefs, botanical drugs are proving more economical than synthetics and hold forth encouraging prospects of inhibiting or destroying tumors without undue damage to healthy tiss

Distribution and characterization of environmental promoter substances as assayed by synergistic Epstein-Barr virus-activating system.

The application of a new screening procedure which utilizes the synergistic effect of short-chain fatty acids and tumor-promoting diterpene esters enabled rapid and easy detection of environmental substances with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-activating/tumor-promoting potency. Over 500 samples were tested and more than 30 substances with such activities were identified. Most, if not all, were plant diterpene esters derived from Euphorbiaceae and Thymelaeaceae families and a few were indole alkaloids of microbial origin. We attempted to link these laboratory findings with those of epidemiological f

Effects of Different Light Conditions on Anatomical and Histological Features of Galls in Bacterial Gall Disease of Cerasus × yedoensis.

Cerasus × yedoensis (cherry 'Somei-yoshino' Fujino) is affected by bacterial gall disease caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. cerasicola (PSC). C. × yedoensis is often infected with PSC under weak light intensity, which indicates that susceptibility of C. × yedoensis to PSC is affected by light. To evaluate the effects of white light intensity and different light qualities, white or blue, on bacterial gall disease development, we quantitatively assessed the anatomical and histological features of bacterial-inoculated sites on branches of 2-year-old potted C. × yedoensis seedlings grown under di

Antiallergic effects of Lactobacillus pentosus strain S-PT84 mediated by modulation of Th1/Th2 immunobalance and induction of IL-10 production.

BACKGROUND: Many types of fermented food are consumed in Japan. Although some are produced by plant-origin lactic-acid bacteria (LAB) fermentation, the physiological functions of such bacteria remain unclear. We therefore isolated LAB of plant origin from Kyoto pickles and determined the immunological activity of heat-killed preparations of plant-origin LAB. METHODS: The Lactobacillus pentosus strain S-PT84 was selected from among 16 LAB of plant origin as the strongest interleukin (IL)-12-inducing strain. IL-12- and IL-10-inducing activities were determined with macrophages from BALB/c mice.

Formation of DHP-DNA Adducts from Rat Liver Microsomal Metabolism of 1,2-Unsaturated Pyrrolizidine Alkaloid-Containing Plant Extracts and Dietary Supplements.

1,2-Unsaturated pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) are carcinogenic phytochemicals. We previously determined that carcinogenic PAs and PA N-oxides commonly form a set of four (±)-6,7-dihydro-7-hydroxy-1-hydroxymethyl-5H-pyrrolizine (DHP)-DNA adducts, namely, DHP-dG-3, DHP-dG-4, DHP-dA-3, and DHP-dA-4. This set of DHP-DNA adducts has been implicated as a potential biomarker of PA-induced liver tumor initiation from metabolism of individual carcinogenic PAs. To date, it is not known whether this generality occurs from metabolism of PA-containing plant extracts. In this study, we investigate the rat l

Biotoxins for cancer therapy.

In recent times, a number of studies have provided evidence that biotoxins present great potential as antitumor agents, such as snake venom, bee venom, some bacteria toxins and plant toxins, and thus could be used as chemotherapeutic agents against tumors. The biodiversity of venoms and toxins make them a unique source from which novel anticancer agent may be developed. Biotoxins, also known as natural toxins, include toxic substances produced by plants, animals and microorganisms. Here, we systematically list representative biological toxins that have antitumor properties, involving animal to

On the genetic control of planar growth during tissue morphogenesis in plants.

Tissue morphogenesis requires extensive intercellular communication. Plant organs are composites of distinct radial cell layers. A typical layer, such as the epidermis, is propagated by stereotypic anticlinal cell divisions. It is presently unclear what mechanisms coordinate cell divisions relative to the plane of a layer, resulting in planar growth and maintenance of the layer structure. Failure in the regulation of coordinated growth across a tissue may result in spatially restricted abnormal growth and the formation of a tumor-like protrusion. Therefore, one way to approach planar growth co
