Conventional agrochemicals are underutilized due to their large particle sizes, poor foliar retention rates, and difficult translocation in plants, and the development of functional nanodelivery carriers with high adhesion to the plant body surface and efficient uptake and translocation in plants remains challenging. In this study, a nanodelivery system based on a pectin-encapsulated iron-based MOF (TF@Fe-MOF-PT NPs) was constructed to enhance the utilization of thifluzamide (TF) in rice plants by taking advantage of the pectin affinity for plant cell walls. The prepared TF@Fe-MOF-PT NPs exhib

BACKGROUND: Thousands of flowering plant species attract pollinators without offering rewards, but the evolution of this deceit is poorly understood. Rewardless flowers of the orchid Erycina pusilla have an enlarged median sepal and incised median petal ('lip') to attract oil-collecting bees. These bees also forage on similar looking but rewarding Malpighiaceae flowers that have five unequally sized petals and gland-carrying sepals. The lip of E. pusilla has a 'callus' that, together with winged 'stelidia', mimics these glands. Different hypotheses exist about the evolutionary origin of the me

Stone crushing processes release particulates and associated noxious substances in our surroundings that are continuously destructing environmental conditions and ecosystem health. Morpho-anatomical changes in some medicinally important native species (Aerva javanica, Calotropis procera, Digera muricata, Euphorbia prostrata, Euploca strigosa, and Peganum harmala) exposed to heavy dust pollution were evaluated. These species selected on the basis of their ubiquitous distribution in the area. Two sites were selected in the Kirana Hills, Sargodha, one near stone crushers within 500-m radius (poll

A previously unknown disease which causes severe vein thickening and inward leaf curl was observed in a number of opium poppy (Papaver somniferum L.) plants. The sequence analysis of full-length viral genome and associated betasatellite reveals the occurrence of Ageratum enation virus (AEV) and Ageratum leaf curl betasatellite (ALCB), respectively. Co-infiltration of cloned agroinfectious DNAs of AEV and ALCB induces the leaf curl and vein thickening symptoms as were observed naturally. Infectivity assay confirmed this complex as the cause of disease and also satisfied the Koch's postulates. C

Root knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) is a major group of plant-parasitic nematode that severely reduce crop productivity by hijacking host root resources. Environmental and toxicological risks associated with chemical nematicides drive the need of eco-friendly management strategies. Therefore, a greenhouse experiment was conducted to assess the single/joint suppressive effects of Arthrobotrys oligospora and salicylic acid (SA) in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) plants infected with Meloidogyne incognita. Compared to single treatment, combined (A. oligospora + SA) application exhibited pronounc

Temperature is a major determinant of plant metabolic plasticity, yet its role in directing volatile and semi-volatile specialized metabolism in Ginkgo biloba remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated how contrasting low- and high-temperature treatments reshape secondary metabolite contents in G. biloba microclones cultivated in vitro. Plants were exposed to cold (+3 °C) and heat (+30 °C) conditions, and their responses were analyzed using GC-MS profiling, anatomical measurements, chlorophyll fluorescence, and multivariate statistics. Cold treatment selectively increased the ab

The ability of three plant species: Helianthus annuus, Nicotiana tabacum, and Vetiveria zizanioides for phytoaccumulation of Pb was studied. Plants were grown in hydroponic solution containing Pb(NO3)2 at concentration of 0.25 and 2.5 mM Pb in the presence or absence of chelating agents (EDTA or DTPA). Lead (Pb) transport and localization within the tissues of the plant species was determined using scanning electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometers (SEM-EDS). The addition of chelators increased Pb uptake as compared to plants grown in solution containing Pb alone.

BACKGROUND: microRNAs (miRNAs) are important regulators in plant growth and development. miR159 is a conserved miRNA among different plant species and has various functions in plants. Studies on miR159 are mostly done on model plant, Arabidopsis thaliana. In rice, studies on miR159 were either based upon genome-wide expression analyses focused upon responses to different nitrogen forms and abiotic stress or upon phenotypic studies of transgenic plants overexpressing its precursor. STTM (Short Tandem Target Mimic) is an effective tool to block the activity of endogenous mature miRNA activity in

Bulblet formation is a critical type of direct vegetative regeneration in plants, where modified leaf bases undergo a developmental transition to generate new bulb structures. However, the cellular trajectories driving this scale-to-bulblet transition remain poorly understood. Here, we applied single-nucleus sequencing to construct a high-resolution cellular atlas of lily bulblet formation. We identified a population of meristem-like cells located adjacent to vascular bundle sheath cells that exhibits progenitor-like features and transcriptional associations with vascular and parenchyma cell s

Contamination of vegetables with heavy metals and microplastics is a major environmental and human health concern. This study investigated the role of taurine (TAE) in alleviating arsenic (As) and polyvinyl chloride microplastic (MP) toxicity in broccoli plants. The experiment followed a completely randomized design with four replicates per treatment. Plants were grown in soil spiked with MP (200 mg kg‒1), As (42.8 mg kg‒1), and their combination (As + MP) with or without taurine (TAE; 100 mg L‒1) foliar supplementation. Results demonstrated that MP, As, and As + MP toxicity markedly decreased

Cellulosic secondary walls evolved convergently in coralline red macroalgae, reinforcing tissues against wave-induced breakage, despite differences in cellulose abundance, microfibril orientation, and wall structure. Cellulose-enriched secondary cell walls are the hallmark of woody vascular plants, which develop thickened walls to support upright growth and resist toppling in terrestrial environments. Here we investigate the striking presence and convergent evolution of cellulosic secondary walls in coralline red algae, which reinforce thalli against forces applied by crashing waves. Despite o

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) requires frequent irrigation due to its shallow root system and high transpiration rate of the aboveground parts. However, it is also prone to waterlogging damage. Therefore, understanding its response to waterlogging is crucial for breeding waterlogging-tolerant varieties. Although Rho of Plants GTPases play well-established roles in regulating development and stress signalling, their functions in plant adaptation to waterlogging stress has yet to be fully elucidated. Here, we identified nine CsROP genes in the cucumber genome, which exhibit evolutionary diversif

Sugarcane (Saccharum hybrids), the second largest cash crop of Pakistan, is planted on 1.029 million ha with an annual production of 50 million tons. During a survey of the sugarcane crop in Faisalabad, Sargodha, and the Dera Ghazi Khan Division of the Punjab Province of Pakistan from 2007 to 2010, symptoms consistent with ratoon stunting, including stunted growth and reddening of the vascular bundles at the nodal regions (1), was observed on sugarcane cvs. CP77-400, SPF-241, CP72-2086, and NCo-310. CP72-2086 and NCo-310 showed severely stunted growth in both crop cycles. A chemical test was p

The symbiotic relationship between the legume Medicago sativa and the soil bacteria Sinorhizobium meliloti results in the formation of nitrogen-fixing root nodules. Traditional destructive methods, including paraffin sectioning, vibratome sectioning, and cryosectioning, have been applied to visualize how bacteria occupy the nodule, making it extremely difficult to obtain reliable three-dimensional information. These approaches are often combined with fluorescent labeling or staining, which can introduce additional stress affecting plant growth and nodule formation. MicroCT has emerged as a rel

Pulvini are plant motor organs that fulfill two conflicting mechanical roles. At rest, pulvini function as rigid beams that support the cantilevered weight of leafy appendages. During thigmonastic (touch-induced) or nyctinastic ("sleep"-induced) plant movements, however, pulvini function as flexible joints capable of active bending. I hypothesized that the ability to alternate between these roles emerges from the interaction of two structural features of pulvini: anisotropically reinforced parenchyma cells comprising the body of the pulvinus and a longitudinally stiff but flexurally pliant vas

The lack of mutants due to the long periods between flowering of bamboo plants is one of the limiting factors inhibiting research progress in the culm development of bamboo plants. In this study, a stable new dwarf variant of Phyllostachys edulis (Moso bamboo), Phyllostachys edulis f. exaurita T. G. Chen, was discovered and was characterized morphologically, anatomically, and physiologically. The height, diameter at breast height, number of internodes, length and wall thickness of internodes, length, width and number of parenchyma cells of internodes, and morphology of the wide-type (WT) and d

• In legumes, symbiotic leghemoglobins facilitate oxygen diffusion to the bacteroids, but the roles of nonsymbiotic and truncated hemoglobins are largely unknown. Here the five hemoglobin genes of Lotus japonicus have been functionally characterized to gain insight into their regulatory mechanisms. • Plants were exposed to nitric oxide donors, stressful conditions, and hormones. Gene expression profiling was determined by quantitative PCR, and gene activities were localized using in situ hybridization and promoter-reporter gene fusions. • The LjGLB1-1, LjGLB2, and LjGLB3-1 mRNA expression leve
