Under controlled conditions, lower concentrations of aqueous extracts of Acroptilon repens are needed to inhibit seed germination and seedling growth of weeds than crops.

Preventing weeds from hindering agricultural production often relies on chemical inputs; however, these inputs can be ineffective, increase costs, or harm the environment. Natural products, particularly plant extracts, are being explored as potential sources for developing eco-friendly bioherbicides that replace or reduce the use of chemical herbicides. In this study, we examined to what degree aqueous extract from the allelopathic weed Acroptilon repens L. (Russian knapweed) was able to influence seed germination and seedling growth metrics in vitro. Uniquely, our study compared the impacts o

Fendioxypyracil, a new and systemic PPO-inhibiting herbicide for X-spectrum weed control.

BACKGROUND: Fendioxypyracil is a new protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO; HRAC Group 14)-inhibiting herbicide developed to expand post-emergence weed control options. The compound combines a pyridine-based core with an aryloxy side chain, resulting in high biological activity. Physiological profiling and enzyme assays confirmed PPO inhibition as its mode of action, with strong inhibition of both PPO1 and PPO2 from Amaranthus tuberculatus and higher potency than saflufenacil, particularly against PPO2. Greenhouse and field studies demonstrated broad-spectrum efficacy against major broadleaf and gra

Evolving understanding of the evolution of herbicide resistance.

A greater number of, and more varied, modes of resistance have evolved in weeds than in other pests because the usage of herbicides is far more extensive than the usage of other pesticides, and because weed seed output is so great. The discovery and development of selective herbicides are more problematic than those of insecticides and fungicides, as these must only differentiate between plant and insect or pathogen. Herbicides are typically selective between plants, meaning that before deployment there are already some crops possessing natural herbicide resistance that weeds could evolve. The

Herbicidal Secondary Metabolites from Actinomycetes: Structure Diversity, Modes of Action, and Their Roles in the Development of Herbicides.

Weeds had caused significant loss for crop production in the process of agriculture. Herbicides have played an important role in securing crop production. However, the high reliance on herbicides has led to environmental issues as well as the evolution of herbicide resistance. Thus, there is an urgent need for new herbicides with safer toxicological profiles and novel modes of action. Actinomycetes produce very diverse bioactive compounds, of which some show potent biopesticidal activity. The herbicidal secondary metabolites from actinomycetes can be classified into several groups, such as ami

Allelopathic effect of Artemisia argyi on the germination and growth of various weeds.

Allelopathy means that one plant produces chemical substances to affect the growth and development of other plants. Usually, allelochemicals can stimulate or inhibit the germination and growth of plants, which have been considered as potential strategy for drug development of environmentally friendly biological herbicides. Obviously, the discovery of plant materials with extensive sources, low cost and markedly allelopathic effect will have far-reaching ecological impacts as the biological herbicide. At present, a large number of researches have already reported that certain plant-derived alle

YOLOv12n-RMB: An Improved Dual Target Recognition Network for Seedling Maize and Field Weeds in Cold Regions.

Accurate identification of maize seedlings and weeds at the seedling stage in dry farmland of cold regions serves as an essential prerequisite for field variable weeding and intelligent plant protection operations. Existing YOLO networks exhibit prominent limitations in feature extraction for fine weeds that grow close to the ground and feature fusion across different scales, and show poor adaptability to complex field conditions including illumination fluctuations, tiny weed interference, and mixed soil textures. To address these issues, this study focuses on maize fields in the cold region a

Discovery of novel (3E)-4, 8-dimethyl-1, 3, 7-nontriene skeleton analogues as potential herbicide candidates.

BACKGROUND: Natural products and their synthetic derivatives are notable sources for discovering new lead compounds of herbicides. Terpene natural product (3E)-4, 8-dimethyl-1, 3, 7-nontriene (DMNT) has been proven to be able to repel and kill the insects, whereas its other bioactivities have rarely been studied. RESULTS: In this study, we focus on the herbicidal activity of DMNT and its derivatives. A series of oxygen- or nitrogen-containing DMNT allyl derivatives were designed and synthesized as novel herbicide candidates. They were characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and HRMS spectral analysi

[Identification methods of crop and weeds based on Vis/NIR spectroscopy and RBF-NN model].

The automated recognition of crop and weed by using Vis/NIR spectral in field is one of hottest research branches of agriculture engineering. If the recognition is efficient and effective, then the variate operations of herbicide or fertilizer spraying in field could be realized. Many researches have pointed out that the reflectance rate of green plant leaves could be used to identify the varieties. As the colors and surface textures of crop and weed were change in different living phases, these changes may exert great influence on the reflectance spectral of plant leaves. Vis/NIR spectra of t

Con-specific neighbours may enhance compensation capacity in an invasive plant.

Facilitation, both by inter- and intra-specific neighbours, is known to be an important process in structuring plant communities. However, only a small number of experiments have been reported on facilitation in plant invasions, especially between invasive con-specific individuals. Here, we focus on how con-specific neighbours of the invasive alien plant alligator weed affect the tolerance of alligator weed to herbivory by the introduced biological control agent, Agasicles hygrophila. We conducted greenhouse and garden experiments in which invasive plant density and herbivory intensity (artifi

The Invasive American Weed Parthenium hysterophorus Can Negatively Impact Malaria Control in Africa.

The direct negative effects of invasive plant species on agriculture and biodiversity are well known, but their indirect effects on human health, and particularly their interactions with disease-transmitting vectors, remains poorly explored. This study sought to investigate the impact of the invasive Neotropical weed Parthenium hysterophorus and its toxins on the survival and energy reserves of the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae. In this study, we compared the fitness of An. gambiae fed on three differentially attractive mosquito host plants and their major toxins; the highly aggressive inva

4-O-α-Thevetopyranosyldiphyllin from Taiwania flousiana: A Novel β-Tubulin Inhibitor with Broad-Spectrum Herbicidal Activity for Sustainable Weed Management.

Synthetic herbicides pose environmental and health risks, driving the search for safer plant-derived alternatives. We isolated a novel aryltetralin lactone lignan from Taiwania flousiana, identified as 4-O-α-thevetopyranosyldiphyllin. The compound showed potent pre- and postemergence herbicidal activity against 13 monocot and dicot weeds, with IC50 values ranging from 0.18 to 4.72 μg/mL. Under greenhouse conditions, foliar application at 80 μg/mL for 7 days achieved over 85% inhibition in two test weeds, comparable to glyphosate. It exhibited systemic translocation and selectivity in crops suc

Strigolactones, signals for parasitic plants and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi.

Although strigolactones play a critical role as rhizospheric signaling molecules for the establishment of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis and for seed germination of parasitic weeds, scarce data are available about interactions between AM fungi and strigolactones. In the present work, we present background data on strigolactones from studies on their seed germination activity on the parasitic weeds Orobanche and Striga, the importance of nitrogen and phosphorus for this seed germination activity, and what this could mean for AM fungi. We also present results on the susceptibility of plan

Synthesis, crystal structure, and biological activities of 2-cyanoacrylates containing furan or tetrahydrofuran moieties.

A series of novel cyanoacrylates containing furan or tetrahydrofuran moieties were synthesized, and their structures were characterized by 1H NMR, elemental analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The herbicidal, plant growth regulatory, fungicidal, and antiviral activities of these cyanoacrylates were evaluated. The results of herbicidal activities showed that most of these cyanoacrylates exhibited higher herbicidal activities against dicotyledonous weeds than monocotyl-edonous weeds, and the compounds containing the tetrahydrofuran moiety gave higher herbicidal activities th

Methyl 3-indolyacetate produced by a gut bacterium of the tephritid gall fly is implicated in controlling Crofton weed by reducing its lignin synthesis.

Eupatorium adenophorum, an invasive plant species of global concern, imposes substantial ecological and economic burdens across its introduced range. This study investigated the tripartite interaction between E. adenophorum, its obligate phytophagous insect Procecidochares utilis, and the insect's enteric microbiota. We isolated Kluyvera ascorbata ZLSY22, a gut-associated bacterium from P. utilis larvae, demonstrating potent herbicidal activity against the host plant. Bioactivity-guided characterization identified methyl 3-indolyacetate (MeIAA) as the principal phytotoxin, exhibiting concentra

Herbicides as weed control agents: state of the art: I. Weed control research and safener technology: the path to modern agriculture.

The purpose of modern industrial herbicides is to control weeds. The species of weeds that plague crops today are a consequence of the historical past, being related to the history of the evolution of crops and farming practices. Chemical weed control began over a century ago with inorganic compounds and transitioned to the age of organic herbicides. Targeted herbicide research has created a steady stream of successful products. However, safeners have proven to be more difficult to find. Once found, the mode of action of the safener must be determined, partly to help in the discovery of furthe

Datura stramonium - A Dangerous Weed and Alternative Drug of Abuse: An Overview of Poisoning Cases in 21st Century.

Datura stramonium is a well-known cosmopolitan weed known by several common names: thorn apple (due to the appearance of its fruits), Angel's trumpet (linked to its flowers), loco seed (referring to the hallucinogenic properties of its seeds), jimson weed (originating from the first recorded poisoning involving this plant), and apple of Peru (indicating the plant's origin). All parts of the plant contain the tropane alkaloids hyoscyamine, scopolamine, and atropine together with several minor alkaloids, which cause poisoning such as typical anticholinergic syndrome with neuropsychiatric effects

The role of signaling compounds in enhancing rice allelochemicals for sustainable agriculture: an overview.

Plant phytotoxin synthesis is influenced by intricate signaling networks like jasmonic acid (JA) and salicylic acid (SA). These compounds not only induce allelochemical production but also aid weed suppression and plant immunity. (-)-Loliolide, JA, SA, and their derivatives trigger rice allelochemical synthesis and gene expression. Enhancing allelochemical synthesis in crops offers an alternative, reducing reliance on traditional herbicides for effective weed management. Rice (Oryza sativa L.) serves as a crucial staple food crop, nourishing over half of the global population, particularly in

Thermal image segmentation in weedy fields via synthetic RGB-trained models and GAN-based cross-modality alignment.

Accurate plant segmentation in thermal imagery remains a significant challenge for high throughput field phenotyping, particularly in outdoor environments where low contrast between plants and weeds and frequent occlusions hinder performance. To address this, we present a framework that leverages synthetic RGB imagery, a limited set of real annotations, and GAN-based cross-modality alignment to enhance semantic segmentation in thermal images. We trained models on 1128 synthetic images containing complex mixtures of crop and weed plants in order to generate image segmentation masks for crop and
