Melatonin in edible plants identified by radioimmunoassay and by high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.

Melatonin, the chief hormone of the pineal gland in vertebrates, is widely distributed in the animal kingdom. Among many functions, melatonin synchronizes circadian and circannual rhythms, stimulates immune function, may increase life span, inhibits growth of cancer cells in vitro and cancer progression and promotion in vivo, and was recently shown to be a potent hydroxyl radical scavenger and antioxidant. Hydroxyl radicals are highly toxic by-products of oxygen metabolism that damage cellular DNA and other macromolecules. Herein we report that melatonin, in varying concentrations, is also fou

Malabaricone C isolated from edible plants as a potential inhibitor of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Although the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic worldwide has gradually decreased, in some areas, the situation has not yet been stamped and has become a global health emergency. It is quite possible that we could again be threatened by a new coronavirus. Therefore, new nucleotide analog drugs and vaccines or using drug repositioning for SARS-CoV-2 still has been developed, yet their safety and efficacy against COVID-19 remains underexplored. Malabaricone C is 2,6-dihydroxyphenyl acylphenol found in edible plants such as the mace spice of nutmeg derived from the seeds of Myristica fragrans. In this study, we

Accumulation and risk assessment of antibiotics in edible plants grown in contaminated farmlands: A review.

The extensive occurrence of antibiotics in farmland soil might threaten food safety. The bioaccumulation potential of antibiotics in edible vegetables and crops grown under realistic farming scenarios was reviewed and the human health risk was assessed. A total of 51 antibiotics were documented in 37 species of daily consumed crops. Among different classes of antibiotics, tetracyclines (TCs) exhibited higher residue levels in plants than quinolones (QNs), sulfonamides (SAs), and macrolides (MLs), with median values ranging from 5.10 to 15.4 μg/kg dry weight. The favored accumulation of TCs in

Edible and highly biocompatible nanodots from natural plants for the treatment of stress gastric ulcers.

The incidence rate of stress ulcers has increased in recent years, with an increase in life pressure, unavoidable trauma and other factors. The therapy of acute stress ulcers has always been an important challenge. Carbon dots (CDs) have been reported to show excellent biological activities, but research on the stress ulcer curative effect of CDs is unprecedented. Here, we prepared a series of semi-carbonized nanodots (SCNDs) from natural plants or herbs as precursors and the as prepared SCNDs were later proved to be effective in the treatment and inhibition of stress gastric ulcers in a rat m

Recent Advances in Plant-Based Edible Emulsion Gels for 3D-Printed Foods.

3D printing has emerged as a suitable technology for creating foodstuff with functional, sensorial, and nutritional attributes. There is growing interest in creating plant-based foods as alternatives to address current demands, especially to tailor consumer preferences. Consequently, plant-derived edible inks for additive manufacturing have emerged as suitable options, including emulsion gels (or emulgels). These gels can be formulated entirely from plant-derived lipids, proteins, polysaccharides, and/or other ingredients to form complex fluids that belong to the category of soft matter. This

A cooperative cobalamide biosynthesis guild in the endosphere of the edible aquatic plant Wolffia globosa Mankai.

BACKGROUND: Cobalamin (vitamin B₁₂) is synthesized only by certain bacteria and archaea and is rarely found in plant-derived foods because plants neither synthesize nor require this cofactor. The edible duckweed Wolffia globosa Mankai is unusual in containing bioavailable cobalamin, suggesting a microbial origin. However, how cobalamin biosynthetic capacity is organized within angiosperm-associated microbiomes remains largely unresolved. Here, we investigated bacterial community structure and cobamide biosynthetic potential across the cultivation medium, plant surface, and internal tissues of
