Reproductive and developmental toxicity of plant growth regulators in humans and animals.

Plant growth regulators (PGRs) are currently one of the widely used pesticides, as being considered to have relatively low toxicity compared with other pesticides. However, widespread use may lead to overexposure from multiple sources. Exposure to PGRs is associated with different toxicity that affects many organs in our body, such as the toxicity to testis, ovaries, liver, kidneys and brain. In addition, some PGRs are considered potential endocrine disrupting chemicals. Evidence exists for development and reproductive toxicity associated with prenatal and postnatal exposure in both animals an

Sulfite oxidase protects plants against sulfur dioxide toxicity.

The gaseous pollutant SO(2) readily reacts with water to form sulfite that impacts deleteriously on animal and plant health. By modulating the level of sulfite oxidase (SO) that catalyzes the transformation of sulfites to the non-toxic sulfate, we show that Arabidopsis and tomato plants can be rendered resistant or susceptible to SO(2)/sulfite. Plants in which sulfite oxidase expression was abrogated by RNA interference (RNAi) accumulated relatively less sulfate after SO(2) application and showed enhanced induction of senescence and wounding-associated transcripts, leaf necrosis and chlorophyl

Harnessing the interplay between metal toxicity and DNA methylation in plants.

Research into how plants adapt to stress through genetic and epigenetic mechanisms is a rapidly evolving field, with epigenetic flexibility serving as a critical factor for survival in heavily contaminated, high-metal environments. Cutting-edge technologies, specifically Whole Genome Bisulfite Sequencing (WGBS) and Reduced Representation Bisulfite Sequencing (RRBS), have revolutionized this area by moving beyond broad, genome-wide surveys to pinpoint specific, gene-level alterations induced by metal stress. These high-throughput methods have fundamentally transformed the landscape of environme

Natural Taxanes: From Plant Composition to Human Pharmacology and Toxicity.

Biologically active taxanes, present in small- to medium-sized evergreen conifers of various Taxus species, are widely used for their antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects, but mostly for their antitumour effects used in the treatment of solid tumours of the breast, ovary, lung, bladder, prostate, oesophagus and melanoma. More of the substances found in Taxus plant extracts have medical potential. Therefore, at the beginning of this review, we describe the methods of isolation, identification and determination of taxanes in different plant parts. One of the most important ta

Plant components can reduce methylmercury toxication: A mini-review.

BACKGROUND: Methylmercury (MeHg) is a ubiquitous environmental pollutant, with the nervous system as its main target; however, the neurotoxic mechanisms of MeHg have not been fully elucidated, and no effective therapeutic and preventive drugs are available to mitigate its toxicity. Recent evidence suggests a reduction in the toxicity of MeHg by natural plant extracts. SCOPE OF REVIEW: The aim of this review is to provide an overview of effective natural plant extracts and their putative biochemical mechanisms for blocking gut absorption, enhancing excretion and minimizing toxic effects of MeH

Chemical and Plant-Based Insect Repellents: Efficacy, Safety, and Toxicity.

Most emerging infectious diseases today are arthropod-borne and cannot be prevented by vaccinations. Because insect repellents offer important topical barriers of personal protection from arthropod-borne infectious diseases, the main objectives of this article were to describe the growing threats to public health from emerging arthropod-borne infectious diseases, to define the differences between insect repellents and insecticides, and to compare the efficacies and toxicities of chemical and plant-derived insect repellents. Internet search engines were queried with key words to identify scient

Regulatory mechanisms of sulfur metabolism affecting tolerance and accumulation of toxic trace metals and metalloids in plants.

Soil contamination with trace metals and metalloids can cause toxicity to plants and threaten food safety and human health. Plants have evolved sophisticated mechanisms to cope with excess trace metals and metalloids in soils, including chelation and vacuolar sequestration. Sulfur-containing compounds, such as glutathione and phytochelatins, play a crucial role in their detoxification, and sulfur uptake and assimilation are regulated in response to the stress of toxic trace metals and metalloids. This review focuses on the multi-level connections between sulfur homeostasis in plants and respon

Studies on laticiferous plants: toxic effects in goats of Calotropis procera latex given by different routes of administration.

The effects on goats of Calotropis procera latex given by different routes of administration were investigated. The administration of latex at 1 ml/Kg body weight via the oral route or at 0.005 ml/Kg body weight/day via the intravenous or intraperitoneal route caused death of the goats between 20 minutes and 4 days. When the small dose of latex (0.005 ml/Kg body weight/day) was given by the oral route or intramuscular route no death among the goats occurred. Nervous signs, frequent urination, frothing at the mouth, dyspnoea and diarrhoea were the main features in goats given latex by the oral,

Biodegradability-driven nanoplastic modulation of copper fate and toxicity in wetland plants.

Nanoplastics (NPs) are increasingly detected in wetlands and may interact with co-occurring metals, yet the influence of NP biodegradability on metal fate and phytotoxicity remains poorly understood. This study investigated how NP biodegradability modulated copper (Cu) uptake and toxicity in wetland plants, using the mangrove Avicennia marina as a model. Seedlings were exposed to Cu alone and in combination with three types of NPs: non-biodegradable polystyrene (PS), biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA), and polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) in 30-day sediment microcosms. Biodegradable

The central role of hydrogen sulfide in plant responses to toxic metal stress.

With the increase of industrial wastes, sewage irrigation, chemical fertilizers and pesticides, metal contamination is increasingly serious. How to reduce the environmental risk has become a compelling problem in cultivated land. As a gaseous signal molecule, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is involved in multiple plant responses to toxic metal stress. Metal stress rapidly triggers endogenous H2S production and exogenous H2S alleviates metal toxicity in plants. To elucidate the role of H2S in metal tolerance, the physiological and molecular mechanisms of H2S in alleviating metal toxicity is necessary t

Contribution of waste water treatment plants to pesticide toxicity in agriculture catchments.

Pesticide residues are frequently found in water bodies and may threaten freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity. In addition to runoff or leaching from treated agricultural fields, pesticides may enter streams via effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). We compared the pesticide toxicity in terms of log maximum Toxic Unit (log mTU) of sampling sites in small agricultural streams of Germany with and without WWTPs in the upstream catchments. We found an approximately half log unit higher pesticide toxicity for sampling sites with WWTPs (p < 0.001). Compared to fungicides and insectic

Therapeutic potential of traditional herbal plants and their polyphenols in alleviation of mercury toxicity.

Mercury (Hg) is a major environmental contaminant significantly impacting human health. As a naturally occurring element, mercury has been extensively mobilized into aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems over thousands of years, largely due to anthropogenic activities such as mining and metal extraction. Acute mercury toxicity causes extensive physiological damage, affecting vital organs including the kidneys, heart, liver, brain, and skin. Phytochemicals, known for their diverse pharmacological properties, have shown promise in mitigating metal-induced toxicities, including mercury. These compou

Selenium dynamics in plants: Uptake, transport, toxicity, and sustainable management strategies.

Selenium (Se) plays crucial roles in human, animal, and plant physiology, but its varied plant functions remain complex and not fully understood. While Se deficiency affects over a billion people worldwide, excessive Se levels can be toxic, presenting substantial risks to ecosystem health and public safety. The delicate balance between Se's beneficial and harmful effects necessitates a deeper understanding of its speciation dynamics and how different organisms within ecosystems respond to Se. Since humans primarily consume Se through Se-rich foods, exploring Se's behavior, uptake, and transpor
