Atherosclerosis-associated diseases are the main cause of mortality and morbidity in western societies. The progression of atherosclerosis is a dynamic process evolving from early to advanced lesions that may become rupture-prone vulnerable plaques. Acute coronary syndromes are the clinical manifestation of life-threatening thrombotic events associated with high-risk vulnerable plaques. Hyperlipidemic mouse models have been extensively used in studying the mechanisms controlling initiation and progression of atherosclerosis. However, the understanding of mechanisms leading to atherosclerotic p

Atherosclerosis is a silent chronic vascular pathology that is the cause of the majority of cardiovascular ischaemic events. The evolution of vascular disease involves a combination of endothelial dysfunction, extensive lipid deposition in the intima, exacerbated innate and adaptive immune responses, proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells and remodelling of the extracellular matrix, resulting in the formation of an atherosclerotic plaque. High-risk plaques have a large acellular lipid-rich necrotic core with an overlying thin fibrous cap infiltrated by inflammatory cells and diffuse cal

Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have increased risk of developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). This excessive risk starts to accumulate during the earliest stages of SLE. ASCVD in SLE is associated with an adverse outcome. SLE-enhanced atherogenesis is most likely the consequence of a complex interplay between traditional risk factors and chronic auto-immune inflammation. This underscores the importance of conscientious management of traditional risk factors as well as maintaining low SLE disease activity. Shared immune pathways in SLE and ASCVD can affect t

BACKGROUND: Citrullination represents a post-translational modification primarily mediated by peptidylarginine deiminase (PADI) 2 and 4 and resulting in the conversion of positively charged peptidylarginine to neutrally charged peptidylcitrulline. Molecular consequences of citrullination include the generation of neoepitopes which provoke the production of autoantibodies implicated in the development of autoimmune diseases. As citrullination initiates, promotes, and is enhanced by aseptic inflammation which plays a pivotal role in atherosclerosis, we proposed that citrullination might accompan

The presence of a substantial necrotic core in atherosclerotic plaques markedly heightens the risk of rupture, a consequence of elevated iron levels that exacerbate oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation, thereby sustaining a detrimental cycle of ferroptosis and inflammation. Concurrently targeting both ferroptosis and inflammation is crucial for the effective treatment of vulnerable plaques. In this study, we introduce gallium hexacyanoferrate nanoabsorption catalysts (GaHCF NACs) designed to disrupt this pathological cycle. GaHCF NACs function as highly efficient iron chelators with robust

Efferocytosis is considered the key to eliminate apoptotic cells (ACs) under physiological and pathological conditions in vivo, mainly through different types of macrophages to achieve this process. Especially, tissue-resident macrophages (TRMs) are very significant for inflammation regression and maintenance of homeostasis in vivo. Abnormal efferocytosis will lead to the accumulation of ACs and the release of a variety of pro-inflammatory factors, which mediates the occurrence of many inflammatory diseases, including atherosclerosis (AS). AS is a chronic inflammatory vascular disease with the

As the global burden of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease continues to rise, there is an increased demand for improved imaging techniques for earlier detection of atherosclerotic plaques and new therapeutic targets. Plaque lesions, vulnerable to rupture and thrombosis, are thought to be responsible for the majority of cardiovascular events, and are characterized by a large lipid core, a thin fibrous cap, and neovascularization. In addition to supplying the plaque core with increased inflammatory factors, these pathological neovessels are tortuous and leaky, further increasing the risk of

Analyses of individual atherosclerotic plaques are mostly descriptive, relying, for example, on histological classification by spectral analysis of ultrasound waves or staining and observing particular cellular components. Such passive methods have proved useful for characterizing the structure and vulnerability of plaques but have little quantitative predictive power. Our aim is to introduce and discuss a computational framework to provide insight to clinicians and help them visualize internal plaque dynamics. We use partial differential equations (PDEs) with macrophages, necrotic cells, oxid

Atherosclerosis and its complications represent the most frequent cause of death in the developed countries. Pathophysiology of the atherosclerosis development has been described in details. Much less is known what is the extent of reversibility of pathophysiological changes. Several angiographic studies have proved that statin administration can slow down the progression of the coronary arteries atherosclerosis. However, only intravascular ultrasound analysis is able to give a detailed description of atherosclerotic plaque development during the treatment with statins. Studies have shown appa

The current study examines, at both structural and ultrastructural levels, representative segments of internal mammary arteries obtained from 15 male patients, ranging in age from 45 to 75 years, with signs or symptoms of coronary heart disease. These segments were obtained at the time of coronary bypass surgery. Of the 15 segments examined, only 2 were found to have atherosclerotic plaques. In other segments, only an intimal thickening similar to that observed during aging was found. There was evidence of endothelial cell loss and defects of internal elastic lamina in the present study; howev

Carotid artery plaques with intraplaque haemorrhage or atheromatous debris have been found to be associated with an increased risk of embolic stroke. Other methods have failed to detect plaque morphology, and it is not clear whether MRI allows differentiation between prognostically and therapeutically relevant plaque types. We examined 17 carotid bifurcation plaques which had been removed in toto by MRI. For quantifying MR signal intensities (I) the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) was used: (ITissue-IRef)/SDRef, with normal saline (0.9%) as reference (Ref) and the standard deviation (SD) of the

Twenty-three rabbits were fed for 8 weeks with standard diet to which was added a 1.5% cholesterol supplement. After this the cholesterol supplement was discontinued, but 11 rabbits received a daily intraperitoneal injection of 20 micrograms of potassium chromate while the remaining 12 received distilled water. The aortas were examined after a further 30 weeks; their mean weight per unit length was 1.27 g (SE +/- 0.17) in the control group and 0.81 g (SE +/- 0.08) in the chromium treated group (t = 2.36; P < 0.05). The percentage area of intimal surface covered by plaques was 94.8% (SE +/- 1.7

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) remains a leading cause of death globally despite advances in preventive therapies. Understanding of the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis, the interplay between lipoproteins, endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, and immune responses is critical to treating this disease. The development of vulnerable coronary plaques prone to thrombosis, can lead to acute coronary syndromes, for these reasons, the potential plaque stabilization and regression through pharmacological interventions, particularly lipid-lowering agents like statins and P

Inflammation orchestrates each stage of the life cycle of atherosclerotic plaques. Indeed, inflammatory mediators likely link many traditional and emerging risk factors with atherogenesis. Atheroma initiation involves endothelial activation with recruitment of leucocytes to the arterial intima, where they interact with lipoproteins or their derivatives that have accumulated in this layer. The prolonged and usually clinically silent progression of atherosclerosis involves periods of smouldering inflammation, punctuated by episodes of acute activation that may arise from inflammatory mediators r

The formation of advanced glycation end-products(AGEs) is an important cause of metabolic memory in diabetic patients and a key factor in the formation of atherosclerosis(AS) plaques in patients with diabetes mellitus. Related studies showed that AGEs could disrupt hemodynamic steady-state and destroy vascular wall integrity through the endothelial barrier damage, foam cell(FC) formation, apoptosis, calcium deposition and other aspects. At the same time, AGEs could initiate oxidative stress and inflammatory response cascade via receptor-depended and non-receptor-dependent pathways, promoting p

OBJECTIVE: to identify the relationship between the magnitude of neovascularization of an atherosclerotic plaque and its other processes, such as atheromatosis, macrophage responses, hemorrhages, and calcification.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 48 carotid atherosclerotic plaques all their way underwent morphopathological examination, by assessing the magnitude of neovascularization (total vessel density per plague cm2; density of vessels of different diameters; localization in section), atheromatosis (a volume fraction), foam cells (a score of 0 to 5), hemorrhages (a score of 0 to 4), and calcificati

The search for adequate markers of atherosclerotic plaque (AP) instability in the context of assessment of the ischemic stroke risk in patients with atherosclerosis of the carotid arteries as well as for solid physical and chemical factors that are connected with the AP stability is extremely important. We investigate the inner lining of the carotid artery specimens from the male patients with atherosclerosis (27 patients, 42-64 years old) obtained during carotid endarterectomy by using different analytical tools including ultrasound angiography, X-ray analysis, immunological, histochemical an

Infectious aortitis has become a rare disease thanks to the widespread use of antibiotics. We report the case of a patient who, 15 days after initiation of antibiotics for bacteraemia due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), developed acute chest pain followed by haemodynamic instability. A tamponade due to a rupture into the pericardium of the ascending aorta at the site of an atherosclerotic plaque was diagnosed by an emergent chest contrasted computed tomography (CT). Intraoperatively, the septic nature of the rupture was suspected. All aortic atherosclerotic plaque sample

Mucormycosis is an emerging angioinvasive fungal infection caused by ubiquitous saprophytic filamentous fungus that belongs to the class Zygomycosis. Mucormycosis or black fungus infections in patients with recent COVID-19 infections has given rise to a new epidemic during the second wave of this current COVID-19 pandemic in India. Steroid misuse, poor glycemic control, use of industrial grade oxygen, improper humidification and specific variants strains have resulted in profound immunosuppression and are attributed for the high incidence of COVID associated Mucormycosis (CAM) in India.
