Emergency Physician-Administered Sedation for Thoracostomy in Children With Pleuropneumonia.

BACKGROUND: Thoracostomy drainage is sometimes required in children with pleuropneumonia who have large parapneumonic effusion. This procedure is usually performed under sedation. The aim was to report sedation adverse events (SAEs) in pneumonia patients sedated for thoracostomy by pediatric emergency physicians. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted. The medical records of all emergency department patients who underwent thoracostomy between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2018, were extracted. Study outcomes were SAEs that required intervention. RESULTS: Pigtail catheters we

Severe bilateral pleuropneumonia caused by Legionella sainthelensi: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Legionella spp. are ubiquitous freshwater bacteria responsible for rare but potentially severe cases of Legionnaires' disease (LD). Legionella sainthelensi is a non-pneumophila Legionella species that was first isolated in 1980 from water near Mt. St-Helens (USA). Although rare cases of LD caused by L. sainthelensi have been reported, very little data is available on this pathogen. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the first documented case of severe bilateral pleuropneumonia caused by L. sainthelensi. The patient was a 35-year-old woman with Sharp's syndrome treated with long-term h

[Clinical and laboratory diagnostic findings in chronic pleuropneumonia of swine].

In the course of an experimental study 12 pigs were infected intrabronchially with the pathogen of infectious porcine pleuropneumonia, Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae. All animals survived the acute stage of infection due to the application of subtherapeutic doses of antibiotics. After infection all of the animals showed clinical signs of acute pneumonia with an elevation of body temperature to about 41 degrees C. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) was taken every week endoscopically. An increase of neutrophil granulocytes could be observed at day 7 and 14 after infection. In parallel, a clea

PATHOGENIC PLEUROPNEUMONIA-LIKE MICROORGANISMS FROM ACUTE RHEUMATIC EXUDATES AND TISSUES.

In suitable cell-free media it has been possible to cultivate pleuropneumonia-like microorganisms from the following materials, first, from chorioallantoic membranes in which lesions were apparently induced by exudates from patients with rheumatic fever; second, from pneumonic lungs of mice inoculated with similar exudates or with suspensions of the abovementioned abnormal membranes; and third, directly from the arthritic exudate of a patient with rheumatic fever, and also from an erythema nodosum nodule excised from a patient with this same disease. With three different subcultures from joint

Contagious caprine pleuropneumonia and other pulmonary mycoplasmoses of sheep and goats.

Contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP) is now a well-defined disease that is caused by Mycoplasma capricolum subsp. capripneumoniae. CCPP is infectious, contagious and fulfils the classic Koch postulates that characterise such types of disease. The distribution of the disease is not exactly known, but reports of mycoplasma isolation and official declarations to the Office International des Epizooties (OIE) enable a probable distribution map to be obtained. There are many other mycoplasmas that can infect goat and sheep lungs and induce pleuropneumonia. However, pleuropneumonia is often rest

Novel DNA Markers for Identification of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae.

Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae causes porcine pleuropneumonia, an important disease in the pig industry. Accurate and sensitive diagnostics such as DNA-based diagnostics are essential for preventing or responding to an outbreak. The specificity of DNA-based diagnostics depends on species-specific markers. Previously, an insertion element was found within an A. pleuropneumoniae-specific gene commonly used for A. pleuropneumoniae detection, prompting the need for additional species-specific markers. Herein, 12 marker candidates highly conserved (99 - 100% identity) among 34 A. pleuropneumoniae

Genetic Diversity of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae Serovars in Hungary.

A total of 114 Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae isolates from porcine hemorrhagic necrotic pleuropneumonia were characterized by the examination of biotype, serovar, antibiotic resistance genes, and genes of toxin production. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis was used to analyze their genetic relationship, which identified 16 clusters. Serovar 2 (50 isolates), serovar 13 (25 isolates), serovar 9 (11 isolates), and serovar 16 (7 isolates) were the most frequent serovars. Serovar 2 formed nine distinguishable clusters; serovar 13 and serovar 16 were less diverse, exhibiting two potentially related

Experimental aerosol transmission of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae to pigs.

In order to demonstrate the possible role of aerosol in the transmission of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, an experiment including 18 specific pathogen-free (SPF), 10-week-old piglets, randomly distributed into 2 adjacent units, was carried out. In these facilities, air was forced through absolute filters to prevent any contact with infectious agents. During the first 6 d post inoculation, the 2 units were connected by a rectangular opening and the air circulation was forced by the ventilation system from unit A (inoculated pigs) to unit B (non-inoculated pigs). The A. pleuropneumoniae strai

[Pleuropneumonia in swine due to Haemophilus pleuropneumonia s. parahaemolyticus. II. Studies on the epidemiology and the relation to chronic pleuritis (pleural scars) in baconers (author's transl)].

Within a Danish practice area a serological examination was made of 268 breeding animals in 25 conventional sow herds with a view to screening for herd infection with haemophilus pleuropneumoniae. Average size of the herds was 76 year-sows including pregnant gilts (8--200). In 23 herds produced weaners were fed for slaughtering. The frequency of chronic pleuritis in slaughtered baconers in these herds was related to the frequency of seropositive sows in the herds. Three SPF-herds were included in the investigation, a SPF baconer herd reinfected with H. pleuropneumoniae, a SPF baconer herd rein

Enriched Housing Reduces Disease Susceptibility to Co-Infection with Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Virus (PRRSV) and Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (A. pleuropneumoniae) in Young Pigs.

Until today, anti-microbial drugs have been the therapy of choice to combat bacterial diseases. Resistance against antibiotics is of growing concern in man and animals. Stress, caused by demanding environmental conditions, can reduce immune protection in the host, influencing the onset and outcome of infectious diseases. Therefore psychoneuro-immunological intervention may prove to be a successful approach to diminish the impact of diseases and antibiotics use. This study was designed to investigate the effect of social and environmental enrichment on the impact of disease, referred to as "dis

Immunohistopathologic demonstration of pleuropneumonia associated with Morganella morganii in a piglet.

Serofibrinous pleuropneumonia in a piglet was examined microbiologically and immunohistopathologically. Large numbers of Morganella morganii were isolated from the pneumonic lesion, but no other pathogens were identified. A large amount of M. morganii antigen was demonstrated, and its distribution was closely associated with the histologic lesion. This finding suggests that pleuropneumonia in piglets might be caused by M. morganii.

Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia: Seroprevalence and Risk Factors in Gimbo District, Southwest Ethiopia.

Contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP) is a highly contagious disease of cattle which is one of the great plagues which continues to devastate the cattle herds on which so many people are dependent in Africa. Cross-sectional study was conducted from October 2015 to August 2016 to determine the seroprevalence of CBPP in cattle and associated risk factors in Gimbo district, Southwest Ethiopia. A total of 384 serum samples were collected and tested for the presence of specific antibodies against Mycoplasma mycoides subspecies mycoides small colony (MmmSC), using a competitive enzyme-linked immu

Vertebral fracture due to Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae osteomyelitis in a weaner.

BACKGROUND: Osteomyelitis is relatively frequent in young pigs and a few bacterial species have been postulated to be potential causative agents. Although Actinobacillus (A.) pleuropneumoniae has been sporadically described to cause osteomyelitis, typically, actinobacillosis is characterized by respiratory symptoms. Nevertheless, subclinical infections are a challenging problem in pig herds. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first case description that reports clinical, diagnostic imaging, pathological and histopathological findings of vertebral osteomyelitis in a pig and first describes

Identification and characterization of serovar-independent immunogens in Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae.

Despite numerous actions to prevent disease, Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (A. pleuropneumoniae) remains a major cause of porcine pleuropneumonia, resulting in economic losses to the swine industry worldwide. In this paper, we describe the utilization of a reverse vaccinology approach for the selection and in vitro testing of serovar-independent A. pleuropneumoniae immunogens. Potential immunogens were identified in the complete genomes of three A. pleuropneumoniae strains belonging to different serovars using the following parameters: predicted outer-membrane subcellular localization; ≤ 1 t
