[Recurrent infections of the respiratory tract and staphylococcal pneumonia with septic shock and total respiratory failure in a patient with histiocytosis X].

Disseminated pulmonary infiltrates, cutaneous lesions and diabetes insipidus in a female patients with a history of recurrent pneumothorax and persistent respiratory tract infections suggested the diagnosis of histiocytosis X. The pathological examination of a biopsy lung tissue specimen confirmed that diagnosis. In the course of treatment many dangerous complications were observed. The intensive therapy including artificial ventilation (24 days) was fully effective and settle the beneficial clinical outcome.

Effectiveness of cefazolin versus anti-staphylococcal β-lactam for treating methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus pneumonia in critically ill patients admitted to intensive care units: a multicenter cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Critically ill patients carry a high risk of infections and related complications, which significantly increase mortality. For patients with confirmed methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) pneumonia, the optimal definitive β-lactam therapy remains controversial. To date, clinical evidence comparing the effectiveness of cefazolin against other antistaphylococcal β-lactam antibiotics in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting is limited. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of cefazolin versus non-cefazolin β-lactam antibiotics for treatin

[Necrotizing pneumonia and arthritis due to Staphylococcus aureus producing Panton and Valentine leukocidin in a 10-year-old boy].

Staphylococcal necrotizing pneumonia producing the Panton Valentine leukotoxin (PVL) has been described for many years. The french reference center for staphylococcal toxaemia defined it with precision in 1999. A 10-year-old child, died in 36 hours from respiratory distress and shock. Staphylococcal pneumonia was suspected then confirmed: S. Aureus producing PVL was isolated in lung, blood and articulations.

Virulence determinants in Staphylococcus aureus and their involvement in clinical syndromes.

Staphylococcus aureus is a major human pathogen responsible for a variety of toxin-mediated and suppurative diseases. About 50 staphylococcal virulence factors have been described to date. In this review, we examine the clinical implications of key staphylococcal virulence factors in toxin-mediated diseases, septic shock, and severe focal infections such as arthritis, infective endocarditis, pneumonia acquired during mechanical ventilation, and necrotizing pneumonia. Staphylococcal pathogenicity is sometimes due principally to a single virulence factor, as in toxic shock syndrome and necrotizi

Primary staphylococcal infection and toxic shock syndrome diagnosed by polymerase chain reaction.

Primary staphylococcal pneumonia complicated with toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is relatively uncommon in children. Staphylococcus aureus exotoxins are thought to function as superantigens, and seem to promote disease manifestations. The identification of staphylococcal toxin genes by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) offers a specific and rapid diagnostic method for TSS. We describe a 7-year-old child with TSS resulting from staphylococcal pneumonia. S. aureus enterotoxins A and B were detected in the sputum of this patient by PCR.

Protecting against post-influenza bacterial pneumonia by increasing phagocyte recruitment and ROS production.

Seasonal and especially pandemic influenza predispose patients to secondary bacterial pneumonias, which are a major cause of deaths and morbidity. Staphylococcus aureus is a particularly common and deadly form of post-influenza pneumonia, and increasing staphylococcal drug resistance makes the development of new therapies urgent. We explored an innate immune-mediated model of the lung to define novel mechanisms by which the host can be protected against secondary staphylococcal pneumonia after sub-lethal influenza infection. We found that stimulating the innate immunity in the lung by overexpr

Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia with known sources.

Meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), both hospital-acquired and community-acquired MRSA (CA-MRSA) strains, have increased in frequency in the last few years, reaching epidemic dimensions. This review discusses several clinical forms of staphylococcal infection leading to bacteraemia in a high proportion of cases. Staphylococcal (MRSA) bacteraemic pneumonia is predominantly seen in hospital-acquired pneumonia and ventilator-associated pneumonia, reaching a frequency of 8.4% of all bacteraemias, 30% of all nosocomial bacteraemias and 68% of all bacteraemias of patients hospitalised

[Severe community acquired pneumonia due to Staphylococcus aureus in children. About two cases].

The staphylococcal pneumonia is the prerogative of the infant but rare cases were observed in the childhood. We report the observation of two children aged respectively of six years and three years and a half having presented a particular form of severe staphylococcal pneumonia apart from any context of immunodepression. The identification of the particular strains producing toxins Like the Panton and Valentine leukocidin constitutes the first stage of the comprehension of this atypical form of pneumonia. Through these observations and with a review of literature we underline the specific clin

[Staphylococcus aureus broncho-pulmonary infections].

Staphylococcus aureus accounts for 2-5% of the etiologies of community-acquired pneumonia. These infections occur mainly in elderly patients with comorbidity, after a respiratory viral infection. S. aureus could also be responsible for necrotizing pneumonia, which occurs in young subjects, also after flu. Necrotizing pneumonia are associated with the production of a particular staphylococcal toxin called Panton-Valentine leukocidin, responsible for pulmonary focal necrosis, occurrence haemoptysis, leucopenia, and death. In Europe, these strains are still predominantly sensitive to anti-staphyl

Cytomegalovirus reactivation enhances the virulence of Staphylococcus aureus pneumonia in a mouse model.

OBJECTIVES: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) reactivation in intensive care unit patients may increase mortality and favour bacterial pneumonia. We developed a murine model to compare the severity of staphylococcal pneumonia after CMV reactivation and in CMV-negative mice. METHODS: Balb/c mice were primo-infected with murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV n=90) or received saline (control n=90). After latency, all mice underwent caecal ligation and puncture to trigger MCMV reactivation in MCMV primary-infected mice. Surviving animals received an intra-nasal inoculation with methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus

[Use of a countercurrent immunoelectrophoretic method for isolating antistaphylococcal antibodies and staphylococcal antigen in the blood serum of children with staphylococcal infections].

In cases of staphylococcal infection in children (osteomyelitis, purulent destructive pneumonia, phlegmons, abscesses) the use of counter immunoelectrophoresis (CIE) allowed one to detect antistaphylococcal antibodies (anti-poly-A beta) in 12.5-69.1% of cases and staphylococcal antigen in the blood serum in 6.1-25.0% of cases, the antigen titer reaching 1 : 1-1 :8. In staphylococcal sepsis with faintly pronounced local pyo-inflammatory processes, as well as in diseases of nonstaphylococcal etiology and in healthy children, no clear reactions indicating the presence of antistaphylococcal antibo

Characteristics and local risk factors of community-acquired and health-care-associated Staphylococcus aureus pneumonia.

This study aims at identifying characteristics, risk factors and mortality of community-acquired (CAP) and health-care-associated pneumonia (HCAP) by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). We retrieved adults with S. aureus CAP or HCAP diagnosed by blood or pleural effusion culture in 2.6 years, and compared with those of Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae) CAP or HCAP diagnosed by blood or respiratory culture, or urine antigen. We found 18 patients with CAP and 9 HCAP due to S. aureus (female 33%, 66.6 ± 12.4 years-old), and 48 patients with CAP and 15 HCAP due to S pneumoniae (female 41%, 6

Increasing hospitalizations and general practice prescriptions for community-onset staphylococcal disease, England.

Rates of hospital-acquired staphylococcal infection increased throughout the 1990s; however, information is limited on trends in community-onset staphylococcal disease in the United Kingdom. We used Hospital Episode Statistics to describe trends in hospital admissions for community-onset staphylococcal disease and national general practice data to describe trends in community prescribing for staphylococcal disease. Hospital admission rates for staphyloccocal septicemia, staphylococcal pneumonia, staphylococcal scalded-skin syndrome, and impetigo increased >5-fold. Admission rates increased 3-f

Staphylococcus aureus and Influenza A Virus: Partners in Coinfection.

Nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus is a significant risk factor for secondary staphylococcal pneumonia in influenza A virus (IAV)-infected hosts. However, little research has been undertaken to define the environmental and physiological changes that cause S. aureus to shift from commensal to pathogenic organism in this setting. The ability of virus-driven danger signals to cause S. aureus to transition from commensalism to pulmonary infection was explored in a recent study by Reddinger et al. R. M. Reddinger, N. R. New Antibiotics for Staphylococcus aureus Infection: An Update from the World Association of Infectious Diseases and Immunological Disorders (WAidid) and the Italian Society of Anti-Infective Therapy (SITA).

Staphylococcus aureus is an extremely virulent pathogen that is capable of quickly evolving and developing antibiotic resistance. To overcome this problem, new antibiotics have been developed. Some of these have been licenced for use in clinical practice, mainly for the treatment of adults with acute skin and soft tissue infections, in addition to both community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and nosocomial pneumonia (hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia and ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia). In this paper, the main characteristics and clinical use of new licenced anti-staphylococcal drugs
