Working in a relational way is everything: Perceptions of power and value in a drug policy-making network.

BACKGROUND: The development of drug policies has been a major focus for policy-makers across North America in light of the ongoing public health emergency caused by the overdose crisis. In this context, the current study examined stakeholders' experiences and perceptions of power and value in a drug policy-making process in a North American city using qualitative, questionnaire, and social network data. METHODS: We interviewed 18 people who participated in the development of a drug policy proposal between October 2021 and March 2022. They represented different groups and organizations, includ

Informed policy making for the prevention of unwanted pregnancy. Understanding low-income women's experiences with family planning.

California health and welfare officials asked the authors to identify ways that their programs could encourage service use among low-income women. The project posed a challenge: The clients wanted to identify supply-side barriers amenable to intervention, but prior research suggested other factors might be more influential. The approach was to examine service-related issues, but in the broader context of women's experiences. The authors identify factors amenable to intervention, including inaccurate beliefs about methods. Other important influences--such as instability of relationships, skepti

Making a 'sex-difference fact': Ambien dosing at the interface of policy, regulation, women's health, and biology.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) 2013 decision to lower recommended Ambien dosing for women has been widely cited as a hallmark example of the importance of sex differences in biomedicine. Using regulatory documents, scientific publications, and media coverage, this article analyzes the making of this highly influential and mobile 'sex-difference fact'. As we show, the FDA's decision was a contingent outcome of the drug approval process. Attending to how a contested sex-difference fact came to anchor elite women's health advocacy, this article excavates the role of regulatory proc

Health Effects of the Relocation of Patients With Dementia: A Scoping Review to Inform Medical and Policy Decision-Making.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Research into the relocation (including international relocation) of people with dementia is increasingly important due to the aging population and latest developments in the international politics (including globalization and concerns over international migration). There is need for an overview of the health effects of relocation to facilitate and inform decision- and policy-making regarding these relocations. The aim of this literature review was to provide insight into the physical, psychological, and social consequences of varied types of relocations of older adu

A systematic review to assess the policy-making relevance of dementia cost-of-illness studies in the US and Canada.

A systematic review of dementia cost-of-illness (COI) studies in the US and Canada was conducted to explore the policy-making relevance of these studies. MEDLINE, CINAHL, EconLit, AMED and the Cochrane Library were searched from inception to March 2010 for English-language COI articles. Content analysis was used to extract common themes about dementia cost from the conclusions of articles that passed title, abstract and full-text screening. These themes informed our exploration of the policy-making relevance of COI studies in dementia. The literature search retrieved 961 articles and data were

The nexus of central-local environmental policy making: The impact of central environmental inspection on local community governance.

Understanding how intergovernmental competition shapes local environmental regulation under top-down supervision is critical for optimizing environmental governance systems. This study addresses the research gap in dynamic strategic behaviors of local governments during central environmental inspections (CEI) by constructing a two-stage decision-making model that integrates environmental regulation competition and economic resource competition. We validate the model through equilibrium solution reasoning, numerical simulations, and a case study of twin cities, exploring the conditional effects

Nurse prescribing of opioid agonist treatment in Ireland: Evidence, governance, and the politics of drug policy decision-making.

Globally, opioid agonist treatment (OAT) is recognised as a cornerstone of evidence-based responses to opioid dependence. Many countries have expanded access by enabling nurses to prescribe methadone and buprenorphine, with consistent evidence of safety, effectiveness, and improved equity of access. Despite this precedent, Ireland has not introduced nurse prescribing of OAT. Drawing on policy reviews, communications, national strategy documents, legislation, parliamentary debates, international literature and media reports, this commentary positions this issue as an important initiative which

Clinical contexts for Shared Decision-Making in rectal cancer: Organ preservation, sphincter-sparing surgery and tailored stoma policy.

The management of rectal cancer has evolved into a patient-centered multidisciplinary approach emphasizing oncological safety, quality of life (QoL), and functional outcomes. Shared Decision-Making (SDM) plays a pivotal role in navigating treatment strategies that balance these aspects. Rather than reviewing existing SDM interventions, this narrative review explores clinical situations where SDM could significantly support the decision-making process. We focus on three critical therapeutic domains: organ preservation, sphincter preservation and temporary stoma policies, where treatment decisio

Considering economic analyses in the revision of the preventive vaccination law: a new direction for health policy-making in Japan?

Evidence of a significant vaccine policy shift can be witnessed not only in the number of new vaccines available in Japan but also in the way that vaccine policy is being formulated. In 2010, policy makers decided for the first time ever to commission economic analyses as a reference in their consideration of subsidy allocation. This research offers a first hand account of the recent changes in vaccine policies by examining the decision-making process from the perspective of the researchers commissioned to perform the economic evaluations. In order to understand the vaccine policy-making proce

An examination of a voluntary policy model to effect behavioral change and influence interactions and decision making in the freight sector.

Freight transportation is essential to maintaining commerce and economies in the United States and globally. However, freight transportation is known to have significant environmental and public health impacts. Harmful emissions of carbon dioxide, methane, hydrofluorocarbons, and black carbon increase the risk of global climate change. Emissions of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter contribute to serious public health risks including increased incidences of premature death, and increased severity of respiratory and cardiovascular illness. As trade is increasingly globalized and economies e

Use of rubella seroepidemiological data for assessment of previous vaccination policy and for decision making in response to epidemics in Israel.

We examined the prevalence of rubella antibodies in a representative sample of the Israeli population. Three thousand three hundred and twenty-six sera collected during 1997 and 1998, from an age-stratified general population sample were tested for specific IgG antibodies against rubella. The sero-positivity rates to rubella were higher among females as compared with males (89.1% versus 82.3%, respectively (p < 0.001). This difference was the result of much lower sero-positivity rates among males in the age group 13-17, with the lowest value (56.3%) among subjects aged 16. Male subjects of thi

Making regional comparisons policy-ready: clarified, standardised methods and region-wide RSV hospital discharge estimates from Emilia-Romagna, Italy.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) prophylaxis with nirsevimab was introduced in Italy from the 2024–2025 epidemic season. The preprint “Impact of Regional heterogeneity of RSV infection prophylaxis on bronchiolitis in Italy” provides timely information for clinicians and health-system planners; however, several methodological specifications require clarification to ensure reproducibility and valid cross-regional comparability, particularly for the Emilia-Romagna Region. In Emilia-Romagna, programme choices were supported by a retrospective analysis of routinely collected hospital discharge and

Navigating the promise and pitfalls of dashboards in health policy decision making: experiences from Ghana, India, and South Africa.

Dashboards and other interactive web-based data visualisation tools are increasingly being developed to inform health policy at global, national, and subnational levels. Dashboards aim to make policy-relevant data accessible to support decision making, priority setting, policy development, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation for those responsible for these functions. However, evidence on how well dashboards fulfil these functions is scarce. In this Viewpoint, we explore the development of dashboards on topics related to children's health and experiences of actors using dashboards in

Appraising the decision-making process concerning COVID-19 policy in postsecondary education in Canada: A critical scoping review protocol.

BACKGROUND: Responses to COVID-19 in Canadian postsecondary education have overhauled usual norms and practices, with policies of unclear rationale implemented under the pressure of a reported public health emergency. OBJECTIVE: To critically appraise the decision-making process informing COVID-19 policy in the postsecondary education sector. METHODS: Our scoping review will draw from macro and micro theories of public policy, specifically the critical tradition exemplified by Carol Bacchi's approach "What is the problem represented to be" and will be guided by Arksey and O'Malley's framewor

Service user and family participation in mental health policy making in Timor-Leste: a qualitative study with multiple stakeholders.

BACKGROUND: Participation in mental health system strengthening by people with mental health problems and their families is a cornerstone of people-centred mental health care, yet there is a dearth of research about participation from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), particularly from the Asia Pacific region. Hence, this study aimed to assess the current situation, challenges, enabling factors and future actions for service user and family participation in mental health policy making in Timor-Leste. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with 85 adults (≥18 years) who were: (1)

A Bayesian estimator of the real-time case fatality rate in emerging pandemic to inform public health policy-making.

BACKGROUND: The case fatality rate (CFR) is a crucial metric for monitoring ongoing epidemics. However, existing CFR estimators often fail to account for the time lag between symptom report and death, and cannot make real-time predictions. This limits their effectiveness in providing accurate and timely policy guidance during emerging epidemics, which motivates us to develop a more robust and accurate estimator. METHODS: We present a novel Bayesian real-time adjusted CFR (BrtaCFR) estimator that operates in real-time and requires only basic epidemiological count data. The estimator is based on

"You still have that fear": Policy constraints on informed decision making about legalized cannabis use during pregnancy and lactation.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis is the most commonly used drug during pregnancy, excluding alcohol and tobacco, in the United States. Cannabis consumption during pregnancy is increasing along with greater legal and social acceptance. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative content analysis of 23 in-depth interviews with pregnant and lactating people in Massachusetts, a state that legalized cannabis for adult use in 2016. Our aim was to explore how policy constrains or facilitates people's ability to make informed decisions about cannabis use during pregnancy and lactation. Our analysis was conducted using a
