Reconsidering political occupational therapy: implications of martial law on occupational justice in South Korea.

INTRODUCTION: The imposition of martial law on December 3, 2024, in South Korea has reignited critical discussions on the intersection of political systems and occupational justice. Authoritarian governance imposes significant restrictions and disruption of meaningful occupations and exacerbating inequities, particularly among marginalized communities. This study examines the implications of martial law through the lens of occupational justice and political occupational therapy. Additionally, the introduction engages with organizational communication theories, such as institutional discourse,

Freedom and authority in the Clinical Diary.

The paper discusses some philosophical, ethical and political-philosophical implications of Ferenczi's Clinical Diary, with special regard to the concepts of freedom and authority. These topics are already present in Ferenczi's early writings that explicitly deal with social and political issues, the central concept of which is "individual socialism". The paper also discusses (and publishes in Appendix) two short manuscripts by Ferenczi, written probably in 1920, which attempts to parallel psychoanalysis with Marxism, and with liberal socialism, respectively. It is shown that in 1932, the last

Health justice in fragile and shock-prone settings: from theory to practice towards building resilient health systems.

Health justice is an emerging imperative in global health and health policy and systems research, particularly in fragile and shock-prone settings where inequities are deepened by political instability, conflict and structural violence. This practice paper explores how the ReBUILD for Resilience consortium has sought to operationalise health justice as a guiding principle and embedded practice in four diverse contexts: Myanmar, Nepal, Lebanon and Sierra Leone. Drawing from political philosophy, public health ethics and the capability approach, we outline a framework that positions health justi

Nuclear oncopolitics: Surveilling and decommissioning radioactive sources in Ethiopia.

This article examines the Office of Radiological Security (ORS), a U.S. non-proliferation initiative designed to secure high-risk radiological sources in medical, industrial, and research settings, and its implementation in Ethiopia. Drawing on multi-sited ethnographic research conducted between August 2022 and November 2025, I detail the suspicions and resistance the program provoked among Ethiopian actors. While the case adds new perspectives to literature interrogating nuclear politics and speaks to a growing body of literature on power and inequality in global cancer care, my overall aim i

Paleo-proteomic analysis of Iron Age dental calculus provides direct evidence of Scythian reliance on ruminant dairy.

The Scythians, often described as mounted horse-back warriors of the Iron Age steppe with lavish burial goods, have attracted increasing scientific interest over the past years. Recent genetic and multi-isotopic studies have uncovered that the 'Scythians' were neither a homogenous political nor a cultural group, but rather diverse populations of heterogeneous origins with intricate socio-political systems. Although populational differences in agro-pastoral subsistence regimes of Northern Black Sea Region groups have previously been identified through stable isotope analysis, it remains unclear

Political parties' occupational health and safety promises in Turkey: An analysis of the 2023 general election manifestos.

BackgroundOccupational health and safety (OHS) is a vital dimension of labor policy, yet its presence in political discourse, particularly in party manifestos, remains underexplored. In democratic systems, election manifestos reflect the political will and priorities of parties, including their commitment to workers' welfare and workplace safety.ObjectiveThis study aims to investigate how political parties in Turkey addressed OHS in their 2023 general election manifestos. It seeks to evaluate the specificity, relevance, and feasibility of OHS-related promises and their alignment with internati

Grappling With Complex Food Systems to Reduce Obesity: A US Public Health Challenge.

Despite 2 decades of effort by the public health community to combat obesity, obesity rates in the United States continue to rise. This lack of progress raises fundamental questions about the adequacy of our current approaches. Although the causes of population-wide obesity are multifactorial, attention to food systems as potential drivers of obesity has been prominent. However, the relationships between broader food systems and obesity are not always well understood. Our efforts to address obesity can be advanced and improved by the use of systems approaches that consider outcomes of the inte

Not Your Mama's Ideology (But Close): Modest Generational Differences in Ideological Alignment in Postcommunist Europe.

This paper examines whether generational change in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) is associated with shifts in how political attitudes align along the conventional economic-cultural left-right dimension. Because cohorts in the region were socialized under different political-economic systems, CEE provides a setting to assess whether younger generations display patterns of attitude alignment that differ from those of older cohorts. Using pooled European Social Survey data (2004-2023) and original surveys from Czechia, Hungary, and Lithuania, we combine an age-period-cohort analysis of left-ri

Strategies for Better Hypertension Control in India and Other Lower Middle Income Countries.

Hypertension is the most important cause of global burden of disease. It is highly prevalent in India and other low and lower-middle income countries. Prevalence of uncontrolled hypertension varies from 70-90% and is significantly greater in rural vs urban locations. Guidelines based treatment strategy has improved blood pressure (BP) control in high income countries but no context-specific guidelines exist in low and lower-middle income countries such as India. There are numerous barriers to proper BP control in these countries and include political apathy, bureaucratic inertia, weak health s

Caste-, work-, and descent-based discrimination as a determinant of health in social epidemiology.

Social epidemiology explores health in the context of broad social determinants of health, where the boundary lines between health and politics appear increasingly blurred. Social determinants of health such as caste, discrimination, and social exclusion are inherently political in nature, hence it becomes imperative to look at health through a broader perspective of political philosophy, ideology, and caste that imposes enormous obstacles to a person's full attainment of civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights. Caste is descent based and hereditary in nature. It is a character

Uganda--rehabilitation, or redefinition of health services?

Uganda had one of the best health care delivery systems in Africa. The decade of misrule by Amin saw a collapse of the country and an exodus of doctors and other professions. The 1979 liberation war and subsequent political instability and insecurity further aggravated the poor health services then available. When political stability was temporarily restored in December 1980 the cash crop export sector took priority over social services and the health budget declined to only 3.5% compared to a former level of 7.5% of government budget. Emergencies in West Nile, Karamoja and the Luwero triangle

Dismantling structural inequities in global prevention of childhood and adolescent non-communicable diseases.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) account for a growing proportion of morbidity and disability among children and adolescents worldwide. Contemporary NCD preventive strategies are predominantly adult-centric, resulting in delayed prevention and widening inequities, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This neglect reflects a deeper structural and ethical failure, sustained by fragmented financing, siloed governance, commercial determinants of health, and short-term political priorities. Drawing on life-course theory, systems thinking, and principles of global health justice, childh

International comparative analysis: main findings and conclusions.

This paper compares the experience of health and inequality reviewed in the Bulgarian, Hungarian, Polish and Soviet profiles. With health systems very similar in formal organization and stated aims, health status based on death rates has followed very similar tendencies in each country. Sharp post-war falls in infant death slowed down from the 60s onwards, but continued to fall. Life expectancy also increased but again from the late 60s began to fall, particularly for middle-aged men. Inequalities in health-care provision and access have been paralleled by inequalities in health outcome betwee

Analysing government health expenditure in Africa: Trends, determinants and policy options.

BACKGROUND: In April 2001, African Union (AU) Heads of State adopted the Abuja Declaration, pledging to allocate at least 15% of government expenditure to health. More than two decades later, many African health systems remain underfunded, with external aid increasingly unsustainable as official development assistance declines. AIM: This article examines progress towards the Abuja target, the role of political economy in shaping government health expenditure (GHE), and policy options for sustainable domestic financing. SETTING: The authors examined the Global Health Expenditure across 53 AU

The impact of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) on health and wellbeing in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA): A case study of Kenya.

Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) remain endemic to many regions of sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) left behind by socioeconomic progress. As such, these diseases are markers of extreme poverty and inequity that are propagated by the political, economic, social, and cultural systems that affect health and wellbeing. As countries embrace and work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the needs of such vulnerable populations need to be addressed in local and global arenas. The research uses primary qualitative data collected from five NTD endemic counties of Kenya: interviews key

[The democratic movement, cholera epidemic and public health reform in the Zurich canton (1867)].

In the summer of 1867 Zurich, Switzerland, was struck by a severe Cholera outbreak. Recent research suggests that the Cholera epidemic had such an influence on the municipal policy makers that they pushed through a major reform of the public health system, namely of water supply and sewerage. This paper adopts a theoretical conception of crisis and social change to evaluate the plausibility of this hypothesis. The basic idea is that structural change can be usually understood as the consequence of a major social crisis. Exactly this was the case in Zurich during the 1860s. After a decade of ec

The essential health reform in Chile; a reflection on the 1952 process.

The authors claim that the critical health reform in Chilean history was the establishment of the National Health Service (NHS) in 1952. The development of modern Chilean health care since the end of the 19th century is discussed both in terms of the prevailing health situation and the subsequent evolution of institutions and policies, with an emphasis on the social and political conditions that led to the creation of the NHS in 1952. From this analysis and from a comparison of infant mortality rates among Latin American countries during the same period, the authors infer that the 1952 health
