Association of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Urine Metabolites with Type 1 Diabetes.

PURPOSE: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are believed to be a possible factor in the development of cancer, ischemic heart disease, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. The objective of this study was to explore the association between certain metabolites of urinary PAH and type 1 diabetes (T1D). METHODS: In Isfahan City, a case-control study was carried out involving 147 T1D patients and an equal number of healthy individuals. The study measured the levels of urinary metabolites of PAHs, specifically 1-hydroxynaphthalene, 2-hydroxynaphthalene, and 9-hydroxyphenanthrene, in both the c

Prenatal exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and gestational age at birth.

BACKGROUND: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous chemicals with mechanisms of toxicity that include endocrine disruption. We examined associations of prenatal urinary PAH with spontaneous preterm birth (PTB) and gestational age (GA) at birth. We also assessed whether infant sex modifies the association of PAH exposure with spontaneous PTB and GA at birth. METHODS: Participants included 1,677 non-smoking women from three cohorts (CANDLE, TIDES, and GAPPS) in the ECHO PATHWAYS Consortium. Twelve monohydroxylated-PAHs were measured in second trimester maternal urine. Seven meta

Adsorption mechanism of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons using wood waste-derived biochar.

The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been attracted increasing attentions due to their carcinogenicity and teratogenicity. Adsorption is widely considered one of the most potential technologies for PAHs removal. In this study, we prepared two kinds of oxygen-rich biochar derived from waste wood to investigate the PAHs adsorption performance, and the molecular simulation was used to build the 16 priority PAHs, 23 nitrated PAHs, 9 oxygenated PAHs adsorption model. The surface adsorption performance of oxygen-rich biochar significantly depends on the pyrolysis conditions. The main out

Classifying polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by carcinogenic potency using in vitro biosignatures.

One of the most difficult challenges for risk assessment is evaluation of chemicals that predominately co-occur in mixtures like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). We previously developed a classification model in which systems biology data collected from mice short-term after chemical exposure accurately predict tumor outcome. The present study demonstrates translation of this approach into a human in vitro model in which chemical-specific bioactivity profiles from 3D human bronchial epithelial cells (HBEC) classify PAHs by carcinogenic potency. Gene expression profiles were analyzed fr

The Characterization of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Northeastern US Trucking Terminals.

In recent years, significant attention has been given to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) exposures given their mutagenic and carcinogenic properties. However, levels of exposure and the key determinants of exposure are not well defined for the trucking industry. We measured ultrafine particle characteristics at 10 trucking terminals of varying operating size and location in the Northeast region of the United States using particle concentration counter and a surface area analyzer. Multivariate mixed-effects linear regression models were used to assess determinants of the concentration o

Prenatal exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and cognitive dysfunction in children.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread environmental pollutants produced by combustion of fossil fuel and other organic materials. Both experimental animal and human studies have reported the harmful impacts of PAH compounds on fetal growth and neurodevelopment, including verbal IQ of children. Here, we have assessed the association between cognitive function of children and prenatal PAH exposures. The study is part of an ongoing, longitudinal investigation of the health effects of prenatal exposure to air pollution on infants and children in Krakow, Poland. The subjects in thi

Removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from organic solvents by ashes wastes.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can be formed during the refinery processes of crude petroleum. Their removal is of great importance. The same happens with other organic solvents used for the extraction of PAHs (hexane, acetonitrile...), which can be polluted with PAHs. Kinetic and equilibrium batch sorption tests were used to investigate the effect of wood ashes wastes as compared to activated carbon on the sorption of three representative PAHs from n-hexane and acetonitrile. Mussel shell ashes were discarded for batch sorption experiments because they were the only ashes containing P

Impact of placental polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons accumulation on neonatal birth outcomes.

Although polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are recognized for their carcinogenic, teratogenic, and genotoxic properties, there is a lack of scientific evidence detailing impact of in-utero exposure to PAHs on adverse birth outcomes. Present study is planned to fill this research gap by investigating placental levels of 16 USEPA Priority PAHs and associated health risks for infants. Placental tissue samples were collected from 200 pregnant population and infant anthropometric measures like birth height, weight and head circumference were collected from pediatrician records. Enhancing biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons using bacterial consortia and biofilm.

The release of petroleum and its constituents, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), into the environment poses a significant global threat due to their toxic, genotoxic, mutagenic, and/or carcinogenic properties. Using indigenous PAH-degrading bacteria to decontaminate the PAHs is an eco-friendly, convenient, and non-expensive way in comparison to other traditional physical and chemical methods. In the present study, several bacteria were isolated from petroleum-contaminated soils using a culture-enrichment technique. Phenanthrene and naphthalene were used as representative example

Measurement of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) on Indoor Materials: Method Development.

Wildfire smoke penetrates indoors, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in smoke may accumulate on indoor materials. We developed two approaches for measuring PAHs on common indoor materials: (1) solvent-soaked wiping of solid materials (glass and drywall) and (2) direct extraction of porous/fleecy materials (mechanical air filter media and cotton sheets). Samples are extracted by sonication in dichloromethane and analyzed with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Extraction recoveries range from 50-83% for surrogate standards and for PAHs recovered from direct application to isopropan

Occupational exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and risk of prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND: Several industries entailing exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are known or suspected carcinogens. A handful of studies have assessed the role of PAHs exposure in prostate cancer risk, but none has examined tumor aggressiveness or the influence of screening practices and detection issues. We aimed to examine the association between lifetime occupational exposure to PAHs and prostate cancer risk. METHODS: Detailed work histories were collected from 1,929 prostate cancer cases (436 aggressive) and 1,994 controls from Montreal, Canada (2005-2012). Industrial hygieni

Effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in northern bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus).

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are ubiquitous contaminants of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, and are known to induce biochemical alterations in exposed organisms. Aside from a variety of adverse physiological effects associated with exposure to petroleum products, oils, and oil sludges, little is known about the effects of individual PAH on birds. Acute toxicity of naphthalene, pyrene, and benz[a]anthracene (BAA) was examined in adult northern bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus). Additionally, subacute (8 d) and subchronic (60 d) studies were conducted to assess alterations in me

Comparative performance of extraction strategies for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in peats.

The assessment of historical trends in atmospheric deposition of organic contaminants by using peat samples has been reported on several occasions because these samples represent an almost ideal medium for recording temporal changes in organic contaminant deposition rates. The determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in peat samples is complicated due to the high content of organic matter in peat, which affects both extraction efficiency and analytical quality. A rapid and simple method is proposed for the determination of 10 US Environmental Protection Agency indicator PAHs in

Exposure evaluation to airborne polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in an italian airport.

The aim of this study was to use environmental monitoring to evaluate occupational exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and biphenyl in an Italian airport. Air was sampled using a quartz fiber filter, a polyurethane foam, and an XAD-2 layer. After extraction with dichloromethane, concentration and purification analyses of 25 PAHs (including biphenyl) were carried out by gas chromatography-ion trap mass spectrometry. In winter 2005, 12 air samples were taken at 120 L/min for 24 hours in three different areas of the airport. PAH levels were found to be generally low. In all invest

Three distinct conductance states in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon derivatives.

Tight-binding model (TBM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed. Both simulations have demonstrated that the electrical conductance for eight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can be modulated by varying the number of aromatic rings (NAR) within the aromatic derivatives. TBM simulations reveal three distinct conductance states: low, medium and high for the studied PAH derivatives. The three distinct conductance states suggested by TBM are supported by DFT transmission curves, where the low conductance evidenced by T(E) = 0, for benzene, naphthalene, pyrene and an
