OBJECTIVES: To determine the relationship between idiopathic polyhydramnios and fetal gender in the absence of fetal or maternal abnormalities.
METHODS: This was a retrospective population-based register study. 295 women with singleton pregnancies complicated by idiopathic polyhydramnios (amniotic fluid index (AFI) higher than 24 cm) who were delivered at our institution from January 2002 till December 2012 were included. Only pregnancies with an uncomplicated outcome were accepted in this study. The incidence of the male to female fetuses was compared with the one in the general population.

Polyhydramnios is defined as a pathological increase of amniotic fluid volume in pregnancy and is associated with increased perinatal morbidity and mortality. Common causes of polyhydramnios include gestational diabetes, fetal anomalies with disturbed fetal swallowing of amniotic fluid, fetal infections and other, rarer causes. The diagnosis is obtained by ultrasound. The prognosis of polyhydramnios depends on its cause and severity. Typical symptoms of polyhydramnios include maternal dyspnea, preterm labor, premature rupture of membranes (PPROM), abnormal fetal presentation, cord prolapse and

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the proportion and type of fetal anomalies that are associated with polyhydramnios and to examine whether in cases with idiopathic polyhydramnios during the course of pregnancy and fetal anomalies only diagnosed after birth, antenatal characteristics differ.
METHODS: This was a retrospective study involving all pregnancies with polyhydramnios defined by a deepest pool of amniotic fluid ≥8 cm and a detailed ultrasound examination, a 75 g glucose tolerance test and a TORCH serology.
RESULTS: Between 2004 and 2010, 272 pregnancies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. In 8

OBJECTIVE: To determine the risk factors associated with polyhydramnios, and assess the maternal and perinatal outcome in these patients.
METHODS: A prospective study of all deliveries complicated with polyhydramnios in Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Sultanate of Oman between January 2005 and April 2006. Polyhydramnios was divided into mild and moderate to severe based on the amniotic fluid index values. The demographic data, antenatal complications, gestational age at delivery, mode of delivery, postpartum complications, and perinatal outcome were studied.
RESULTS: A total of 2648 singl

Fetal gut atresia is variably associated with polyhydramnios. In order to determine which pregnancies will develop polyhydramnios, the case notes of 80 babies with gut atresia and stenosis were reviewed. Maternal polyhydramnios developed in all cases of pure oesophageal atresia (n = 8), all cases of Type III duodenal atresia (DA) with a non-bifid bile duct (n = 8), 80% of cases with type I DA (n = 10), and 24% of atresias of the small intestine (n = 34). Polyhydramnios did not develop in any case where there was not total obstruction except in 1 baby with DA and a bifid bile duct (BBD). These

It is uncertain whether idiopathic midtrimester polyhydramnios is associated with adverse perinatal outcome. Fifty patients with midtrimester polyhydramnios without apparent etiology were compared to 85 control patients. Demographic, obstetric, and neonatal data were recorded and compared using chi-square, Fisher's exact, and Student t tests. Comparisons were also made within the study group between those patients with resolution of the polyhydramnios and those with persistence. Demographic and obstetric data were similar in both groups. Of study patients, 94% had mild polyhydramnios, which re

Little has been written regarding the ultrasonographic quantification of polyhydramnios or its subsequent management. Therefore, we designed this study to define polyhydramnios using the amniotic fluid index of greater than 2 SDs above the mean for late second- to third-trimester pregnancies, or 24 cm or greater. One hundred twelve nondiabetic women referred to Women's Hospital, Los Angeles County/University of Southern California Medical Center with the descriptive diagnosis of polyhydramnios made by experienced ultrasonographers were included in the study. There was poor correlation between

This paper reports the experience with acute polyhydramnios complicating twin pregnancies at the Mercy Maternity Hospital for the 10-year and 2-month period from January, 1979 to February, 1989 during which time there were 13 such cases, an incidence of 1 in 4,044 pregnancies. Acute polyhydramnios complicated 1.7% of all twin pregnancies. The perinatal mortality rate was 88.5% and accounted for 16.7% of the perinatal deaths in twins. No major fetal malformations were found. One case of acute polyhydramnios was successfully managed with ultrasonographically guided serial amniocenteses. The mana

Lithium is widely used in the treatment of bipolar affective disorders, and teratogenic effects include cardiovascular abnormalities, notably Ebstein anomaly. The most common side effect in the patient taking lithium is polyuria, a form of nephrogenic diabetes insipidus. We report the case of a manic-depressive gravida on lithium therapy who developed polyhydramnios in her last trimester. Because lithium crosses the placenta, we postulate that, by a similar mechanism, lithium may cause fetal polyuria which results in polyhydramnios.

Severe polyhydramnios, probably due to fetal lithium toxicity, is described. The mother had been treated with lithium because of manic-depressive psychosis. The plasma lithium level during the pregnancy was in or below the therapeutic range. From the 26th week of gestation, polyhydramnios developed. In the 35th week, 11.5 L of amniotic fluid was removed over a period of 12 hours by transabdominal amniocentesis. A cesarean delivery was performed in the 39th week of gestation because of fetal distress. The infant presented with the following symptoms, which in previous reports have been associat

We report 4 cases that presented a contradiction in terms of intrauterine lung growth. In all cases there was increased acinar complexity despite an array of influences known to be associated with pulmonary hypoplasia. In 2 of the 4 cases the lungs were severely hypoplastic by weight. Following an analysis of the factors operative in each case regarding lung growth, we conclude that diffuse increased acinar complexity occurs in selected cases with massive polyhydramnios. The observation is of importance because it is consonant with an intimate and dynamic relationship between amniotic fluid vo

Acute renal failure secondary to ureteric obstruction is described in a primigravida with twin gestation and polyhydramnios. Relief of the obstruction occurred on drainage of the liquor and return to normal renal function following delivery.

Polyhydramnios and premature delivery complicated the pregnancies of three women whose infants were born with renal tumors. In each case the tumor was a mesoblastic nephroma. The liquid of polyhydramnios enhances detection of masses in the fetal abdomen by ultrasound. In the future, mesoblastic nephroma may, therefore, be diagnosed antenatally. Tumors in these infants, which have proved in most cases to be benign, are usually cured by surgical removal. Occasionally, local infiltration and adhesions prevent removal. The fate of the infant with residual tumor is not known.

PURPOSE: To determine causes of polyhydramnios and the respective perinatal outcome.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed cases with polyhydramnios at the Medical University Graz, Austria from 2003 - 2011. Inclusion criteria were single deepest pocket ≥ 8 cm, amniotic fluid index ≥ 25 cm, each of the latter parameters > 95th percentile or subjective impression. Etiologies, including TORCH infection, diabetes and congenital malformations, as well as perinatal outcome were evaluated.
RESULTS: Out of 860 singleton pregnancies with polyhydramnios, 2.9 % had positive TORCH serolog

Polyhydramnios carries a poor fetal prognosis with an expected neonatal death rate of nearly 30%. Approximately one-fourth of this perinatal mortality is a result of the effects of prematurity. The poor outcome with usual management of polyhydramnios led us to introduce the therapeutic use of prostaglandin synthetase inhibitors so as to decrease amniotic fluid volume and to prevent premature labor. Twenty-two women (20 singleton and two twin pregnancies) were included in a retrospective study from 1983 to 1992. Indomethacin was given at a dose of 3 mg/kg/day. Treatment was started at 28.2 +/-

BACKGROUND: Washington State birth certificates were used to conduct a population-based case-control study to assess the possible association of maternal smoking with polyhydramnios.
METHODS: All singleton births complicated by polyhydramnios (n = 557) were identified from the vital records for the years 1984 to 1987. For comparison, 1671 records were randomly selected for the same years from singleton births uncomplicated by polyhydramnios.
RESULTS: Women who reportedly smoked prenatally were found to be at increased risk for polyhydramnios (relative risk [RR] = 1.7, 95% confidence interval

Polyhydramnios is associated with multiple maternal and fetal abnormalities. Although the risks of persistent polyhydramnios are well described, the clinical implications of polyhydramnios that resolves prior to delivery are not. Thirty-four non-diabetic patients with resolving polyhydramnios were studied. An amniotic acid index of >or= 20 was used to define polyhydramnios. Antepartum and postpartum outcomes were compared with those patients with persistent polyhydramnios, and a control group of 102 singleton term deliveries. Patients with resolving polyhydramnios did not have a significant in

Seven twin pregnancies with concurrent polyhydramnios and oligohydramnios resulted in a perinatal mortality rate of 71%. The occurrence of this complication before 26 weeks' gestational age resulted in deaths of all fetuses, despite a variety of attempted therapies.
