Calcium Polystyrene Sulfonate Crystal-related Airway Obstruction.

An 83-year-old man diagnosed with multiple myeloma presented with renal failure and hyperkalemia. The patient was treated with calcium polystyrene sulfonate (CPS: kalimate) for hyperkalemia. On the 10th day after starting CPS, airway obstruction due to the presence of a mass was observed, and the patient died on that same day. Autopsy revealed that the mass was located between the trachea and epiglottis and it was determined to consist of CPS-related mosaic crystals. There was a protrusion within the trachea surrounding the CPS crystals, inflammatory cells, and granulation tissue. This case su

Large polystyrene microplastics results in hepatic lipotoxicity in mice.

Like small microplastics (MPs), recent studies reveal that large MPs could cause health risks in mice, even if they are not enriched in tissues. However, potential hepatoxicity following large MPs exposure and the underlying mechanisms have not been thoroughly investigated. In the present study, we explored the disruption of hepatic lipid metabolism and potential underlying toxic mechanisms in mice caused by long-term exposure to large polystyrene MPs (40-100 μm) based on a multi-omic approach. After 21 weeks of feeding foods containing MPs (50 and 500 mg/kg food), lipidomic revealed that envi

Polystyrene microplastics induced female reproductive toxicity in mice.

Plastics have caused serious environmental pollution. In recent years, microplastics (MPs) have caused widespread concern about their potential toxicity on animals and humans, especially on organ and tissue deposition. However, there is little known about the reproductive toxic effects of MPs in female mammals. In this study, the reproductive toxicity of polystyrene MPs (PS-MPs) in female mice was evaluated after continued exposure for 35 days. Results showed that PS-MPs could accumulate in heart, liver, spleen, lung, kidney, brain, large intestine, small intestine, uterus, ovary and blood of

Electrospinning of Grooved Polystyrene Fibers: Effect of Solvent Systems.

Secondary surface texture is of great significance to morphological variety and further expands the application areas of electrospun nanofibers. This paper presents the possibility of directly electrospinning grooved polystyrene (PS) fibers using both single and binary solvent systems. Solvents were classified as low boiling point solvent (LBPS): dichloromethane (DCM), acetone (ACE), and tetrahydrofuran (THF); high boiling point solvent (HBPS): N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and cyclohexanone (CYCo); and non-solvent (NS): 1-butanol (BuOH). Polystyrene embedding: a new method for light and electron microscopy.

Polystyrene embedments of histological specimens can be obtained with a solution of 1:14 polystyrene-toluene, 5% benzyl alcohol and 1% dibutyl phthalate, allowing the solvent to evaporate in polyethylene containers for 2-3 days at 58 C. The resulting blocks are easily cut into truncated pyramids, each containing a piece of tissue, which are then glued to a Plexiglas support. Drying is completed at 80 C for 20 hr. The pyramids can then be sectioned to produce thick sections with a steel knife or to produce semi- or ultrathin sections with a glass knife. A 10% paraldehyde solution is used to mou

The mechanism of R2ab-mediated attachment to polystyrene surfaces in Staphylococcus epidermidis.

The staphylococcal autolysin protein hydrolyzes cell wall peptidoglycans. The R2ab repeats of autolysin guide the catalytic domain by binding to cell wall components and mediate attachment to abiotic surfaces during biofilm formation on polystyrene. Characterizing protein interactions with surfaces is a significant challenge in understanding bacterial attachment. Here, using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, we determined the solution structure and backbone dynamics of the R2ab domain. We then, by combining nuclear magnetic resonance and calorimetry, identified the interaction mode of R

Synthesis and Optoelectronic Properties of Branched Polystyrene-graft-Polyfluorene Copolymers.

Poly(9,9-di-n-octylfluorene) (PFO) applications are limited by green emission defects and imbalanced charge transport. To overcome this, novel branched polystyrene-graft-polyfluorene (PSt-g-PFO) copolymers with varying grafting densities were synthesized. The highly branched architecture induces intense steric hindrance, acting as a physical shield to isolate PFO emissive cores. This successfully suppresses detrimental interchain π-π stacking, mitigating the ~530 nm green emission. Furthermore, the moderately grafted PSt-g-PFO2 promotes locally ordered crystalline packing, achieving a maximum

The Effects of Polystyrene Nanoplastic and Bisphenol A Exposure on the Thyroid Gland in Mice.

The health risks associated with exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) and bisphenol A (BPA) are a recognized global concern, yet their individual and combined toxic effects on the mammalian thyroid remain poorly defined. This integrated in vivo and in vitro study demonstrates that in mice, four-week exposure to PS-NPs alone induced dose-dependent thyroid hormone disruption and structural damage, while co-exposure with BPA resulted in clearly exacerbated injury, indicating an additive toxic interaction. This additive effect was characterized by markedly worsened histopathology and a di

Cerebral to Systemic Representations of Alzheimer's Pathogenesis Stimulated by Polystyrene Nanoplastics.

Plastics discharged into the ecosphere can transform into micro- and nanoparticles to instigate interactions with biosystems, posing a threat to environmental sustainability and human health. While nanoplastics have recently been identified in abundance in the human brain, especially in the decedent brain tissues of dementia subjects, how these exogenous miniatures mediate neurological as well as systemic pathologies remains unclear. Here, we first investigated how environmental-level nanoplastic exposure influences the progression of Alzheimer's disease, from cerebral to systemic representati

Effects of Atmospheric Aging on the Respiratory Toxicity of Polystyrene Nanoplastic Particles.

Inhalation exposure to nanoplastic particles (NPPs) can lead to significant pulmonary toxicity; however, the effects of environmental processing on their toxicity remain poorly understood. This study examines the toxicity of polystyrene (PS) NPPs on lung cells following controlled atmospheric aging. Human bronchial epithelial cells (16HBE) were cultured in vitro at the air-liquid interface and acutely exposed to oxidized PS NPPs through electrostatic precipitation. Expression of proinflammatory genes interleukin-8 (IL-8) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) was significantly elevated at 6 a

Polystyrene microplastics aggravate radiation-induced intestinal injury in mice.

Radiotherapy is a common treatment for abdominal and pelvic tumors, while the radiation-induced intestinal injury (RIII) is one of the major side-effects of radiotherapy, which reduces the life quality and impedes the treatment completion of cancer patients. Previous studies have demonstrated that environmental pollutant microplastics led to various kinds of injury in the gut, but its effects on RIII are still uncovered. In this study, we fed the C57BL/6J mice with distilled water or 50 μg/d polystyrene microplastics (PSMPs) for 17 days and exposed the mice to total abdominal irradiation (TAI)

A Generic Platform for Upcycling Polystyrene to Aryl Ketones and Organosulfur Compounds.

Polystyrene (PS) is one of the least recycled large-volume commodity plastics due to bulkiness of foam products and associated contaminants. PS recycling is also severely hampered by the lack of financial incentive, limited versatility, and poor selectivity of existing methods. To this end, herein we report a thermochemical recycling strategy of "degradation-upcycling" to synthesize a library of high-value aromatic chemicals from PS wastes with high versatility and selectivity. Two cascade reactions are selected to first degrade PS to benzene under mild temperatures, followed by the derivatiza

Mechanisms of polystyrene microplastic degradation by the microbially driven Fenton reaction.

Natural hydroxyl radical (·OH) production, which partially occurs through the microbially driven Fenton reaction, can enhance the degradation of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs). However, ·OH causes damage to microorganisms, which might in turn restrain the microbially driven Fenton reaction. Thus, whether PS-MPs can be continuously degraded by the microbially driven Fenton reaction and how they are degraded are still unknown. A pure-culture system using Shewanella putrefaciens 200 was set up to explore the effect and mechanism of microbially driven Fenton reaction on PS-MP degradation. In a

Esophageal necrosis associated with sodium polystyrene sulfonate (Kayexalate) use.

Acute esophageal necrosis is a rare cause of gastrointestinal bleeding. Endoscopically, it appears as a circumferential black-appearing mucosa affecting almost universally the mid and distal esophagus. Risk factors include low flow states, malnutrition, alcoholism, and the presence of multiple comorbidities. Prolonged exposure to gastric secretions and direct contact with corrosive agents also induce mucosal ischemia. Sodium polystyrene sulfonate use has been associated with severe gastrointestinal adverse events, including increased risk of small bowel and colonic necrosis and perforation. In

Sodium polystyrene sulfonate induced intestinal necrosis; a case report.

BACKGROUND: Hyperkalemia is a commonly encountered medical problem. The treatment of hyperkalemia involves the use of pharmacological agents with different mechanism of actions. Sodium Polystyrene sulfonate (SPS) is a cation-exchange resin that exchanges sodium for potassium. In 2009, the United States Food and Drug Administration issued warning against the use of SPS with sorbitol due to risk of colonic necrosis. We present a case of SPS induced colonic necrosis in the absence of sorbitol and risk factors deemed to increase risk of colonic necrosis. CASE REPORT: Here we report a 64-year old
