Mechanical response of composite materials prepared with polyurethane elastomers and polyvinyl chloride films.

This study describes a new method for the preparation of composite materials using polyvinyl chloride (PVC) films and polyurethane (PU) foam elastomers. This new preparation method was applied to composite materials used for sound and thermal insulation in the automotive and aerospace industries, and it was found to be effective in reducing debonding and fracture defects. This feature was achieved via the formation of through-holes in the surface material and the substrate prior to lamination, which led to the increase in the flow of air and adhesive and allowed for better compatibility betwee

Comparison of fiberoptic bronchoscopic intubation using silicone and polyvinyl chloride double-lumen tubes.

BACKGROUND: Direct insertion of a double-lumen tube (DLT) using a flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope (FOB) is an option for DLT intubation. The difficult process of fiberoptic intubation is that the different properties of polyvinyl chloride and silicone DLTs may affect railroading differently. Therefore, we aimed to compare intubation using polyvinyl chloride and silicone DLTs over an FOB. METHODS: Patients aged 19-75 years who required one-lung ventilation under general anesthesia were enrolled in this study. After induction of anesthesia, the anesthesiologist intubated the DLT using FOB. The

Pneumoconiosis and systemic sclerosis following 10 years of exposure to polyvinyl chloride dust.

The case history is presented of a 58 year old man who was exposed to thermoplastic dusts, mainly polyvinyl chloride (PVC), for 10 years. Radiography and high resolution computed tomographic scans of the lungs suggested both pneumoconiotic and scleroderma-like lesions. Transbronchial biopsy revealed foreign body granulomas with macrophages laden with birefringent inclusions which ultrastructurally resembled PVC dust. Biopsy samples of thickened skin showed histological evidence of extensive fibrosis. During follow up Raynaud's phenomenon and oesophageal involvement developed. The antinuclear a

[Liver disease in polyvinyl chloride production workers - Clinical and peritoneoscopic aspects (author's transl)].

Peculiar clinical symptoms observed in polyvinyl chloride production workers of a nearby chemical plant arose the suspicion of liver and spleen disease in these workers before first reports on vinyl chloride-induced angiosarcoma of the liver became known. Starting at the end of 1972, 44 workers were followed up by biochemical investigations, peritoneoscopy and liver biopsy. As early as 1973 it could be ascertained, that advanced vinyl chloride-induced liver damage presents as hepatic fibrosis with splenomegaly, portal hypertension, and thrombocytopenia without conspicuous deterioration of hepa

Reducing the migration of di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate from polyvinyl chloride medical devices.

We attempted to determine the processing conditions for decreasing the migration of phthalate esters, particularly di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) products using a drug solvent after dilution based on the package insert. PVC sheets and PVC tubing were subjected to optical irradiation (ultraviolet (UV), visible light irradiation) and heat treatment to determine whether they are deteriorated by these treatments. UV irradiation to one side of the PVC sheet decreased the levels of DEHP migration from the sheets by almost 50%, although the amount of DEHP content in P

Meatal strictures after transurethral prostatectomy using latex or polyvinyl chloride three-way catheters.

Because latex rubber catheters have been implicated in urethral stricture formation, the incidence of urethral strictures following transurethral prostatectomy (TUP) and subsequent catheterisation with latex rubber or polyvinyl chloride catheters was compared. A total of 84 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (n = 71) or prostatic carcinoma (n = 13) underwent assessment of urethral diameter and subsequent internal urethrotomy prior to TUP. Following resection, 42 patients received three-way self-retaining latex rubber catheters and 42 received similar catheters made of PVC. Catheters we

Preliminary evidence of polyvinyl chloride microplastics inducing ferroptosis in the cerebral cortex of ducks.

Ferroptosis, a type of regulated cell death, is frequently observed in mammalian brain cortical injuries and diseases linked to iron metabolism disorders. Recent evidence suggests that microplastic exposure may trigger such ferroptosis-related pathologies. However, the mechanism and impact of ferroptosis-induced cerebral cortex damage in waterfowl due to microplastic exposure remain unclear. In this study, Muscovy ducks were divided into three groups receiving: pure water, 1 mg·L⁻¹ polyvinyl chloride microplastics (PVC-MPs), or 10 mg·L⁻¹ PVC-MPs for two months. This study suggests that PVC-MPs

Application of Zinc Oxide to Obtain and Modify Properties of Adipate Plasticizer of Polyvinyl Chloride.

Heterogeneous catalysts are widely used in basic research and in the petrochemical industry due to their effectiveness. In modern times, interest in this type of catalyst and, in particular, in mineral oxides is associated with the technological design of the process, namely: The absence of waste emissions, and the possibility of regeneration and reuse of the catalyst, which meets the criteria of green chemistry. For this reason, the preparation of non-toxic adipate plasticizers is expediently carried out under conditions of heterogeneous catalysis. Zinc oxide was chosen for this purpose, and

A comparison of prelubricated hydrophilic and non-hydrophilic polyvinyl chloride catheters for urethral catheterization.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether patients performing clean intermittent self-catheterization (CISC) for a short period preferred a prelubricated, hydrophilic, disposable polyvinyl chloride (PVC) catheter or a non-hydrophilic PVC catheter which could be used several times and that had to be lubricated by the patient. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a prospective cross-over study, 32 patients used each type of catheter for 3 weeks. After each 3-week period, the patients completed a questionnaire to assess comfort and preference, and urine specimens were obtained for culture. RESULTS: There was no signi

Dose-Dependent Toxicological Effects of Polyvinyl Chloride and Polystyrene Microplastics on Wistar Albino Rats.

Microplastics (MPs), diameter < 5 mm, are becoming a major environmental health concern issue but there is still less information available about the exposure and toxicity of MPs on mammal health. In the current study, we assessed the effects of MPs, Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and Polystyrene (PS) toxicity on body weight, blood glucose, different blood parameters, and oxidative stress of Wistar albino rats. SEM analysis was performed for the characterization of PVC and PS MPs. In in vivo analysis, the rats were divided into five groups and four groups; Groups 2 to 5 were exposed to PVC and PS a

Fluorinated radiopharmaceuticals sorption onto plasticized polyvinyl chloride automated injector tubings: implications for patient dosing.

BACKGROUND: The use of automated injectors for the administration of radiopharmaceuticals limits staff exposure and optimises the dose administered to patients, but many of these devices are only validated for a limited number of radiopharmaceuticals. The objectives of this study were to investigate the physicochemical phenomena occurring during the manipulation of fluorinated radiopharmaceuticals when in contact with injector tubings and to quantify and qualify the interactions between the radiopharmaceuticals and the tubing materials. RESULTS: For six of the radiopharmaceuticals tested, the

Potential Toxicological Consequences of Silver Nanoparticles Coexposed With Polyvinyl Chloride Nanoplastics on Oreochromis niloticus.

Further investigation into the combined harmful effects of contaminants is needed, particularly regarding limited studies on interactions between nanoplastics and nanoparticles in fish, especially those involving polyvinyl chloride nanoplastics (PVC-NPs) and silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs). Thus, this study investigates the potential cumulative toxicological effects of PVC-NPs and Ag-NPs on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) by assessing multiple biomarkers. Four groups of fish were given 10 mg/L PVC-NPs, 4 mg/L Ag-NPs, 10 mg/L PVC-NPs plus 4 mg/L Ag-NPs, alongside a control group (no exposure

Polyvinyl chloride microplastics exposure accelerates endometrial cancer progression via regulating AHR/CYP1A1 signaling pathway.

Endometrial cancer (EC) is one of the most prevalent gynaecological cancers among women. Despite the advent of advanced therapeutic approaches, the mortality rate of EC has not declined but rather shows an increasing trend, which is closely associated with its rising incidence. No viable strategies have been established to curb the rising incidence of EC. Polyvinyl hloride microplastics (PVC-MPs) represent ubiquitous environmental contaminants. Increasing evidences demonstrate the carcinogenic potential of PVC-MPs exposure. However, PVC-MPs specific role and mechanisms in EC remain unelucidate

Polyethylene and Polyvinyl Chloride Nanoplastics Accelerate Atherosclerosis Through Distinct Smooth Muscle Cell Phenotypic Transitions.

Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) are increasingly detected in human tissues, yet their causal contribution to cardiovascular disease remains poorly understood. Here we show that oral exposure to polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) -- the most abundant polymers found in human atheromas -- accelerates atherosclerosis in ApoE-/- mice through distinct, polymer-specific molecular mechanisms. While both polymers increased plaque burden and reduced contractile smooth muscle cell (SMC) markers, single-cell transcriptomic profiling revealed divergent phenotypic trajectories. PE exposure drives

Diesel Adsorption to Polyvinyl Chloride and Iron During Contaminated Water Flow and Flushing Tests.

This paper presents an experimental and theoretical study of aqueous diesel contamination and decontamination of a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) surface and an iron (Fe) surface. A test apparatus designed for the purpose of studying adsorption of diesel from a flowing dilute diesel/water mixture was used to measure the mass of diesel adsorbed per unit surface area (the excess surface density) and the bulk concentration of the diesel in the flow using a fluorescence based measurement technique. Both bulk composition and the excess surface density measurements were achieved via a traverse of the fluo
