Evaluation of the 2022 West Nile virus forecasting challenge, USA.

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) is the most common cause of mosquito-borne disease in the continental USA, with an average of ~1200 severe, neuroinvasive cases reported annually from 2005 to 2021 (range 386-2873). Despite this burden, efforts to forecast WNV disease to inform public health measures to reduce disease incidence have had limited success. Here, we analyze forecasts submitted to the 2022 WNV Forecasting Challenge, a follow-up to the 2020 WNV Forecasting Challenge. METHODS: Forecasting teams submitted probabilistic forecasts of annual West Nile virus neuroinvasive disease (WNND)

Incidence Rate of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome without Specific Treatment in India and Nepal.

BACKGROUND: A performance target (PT) for the incidence rate (IR) of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) was not defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) due to lack of data. There is no specific treatment for ~90% of the AES cases. OBJECTIVES: (1) To determine the IR of AES not having specific treatment (AESn) in two countries, India and Nepal. (2) To suggest the PT. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This was a record-based study of the entire population of India and Nepal from 1978 to 2011. The WHO definition was used for inclusion of cases. Cases that had specific treatment were excluded. IR was

Not part of my routine: a qualitative study of use and understanding of UV forecast information and the SunSmart app.

BACKGROUND: The Ultraviolet (UV) Index provides a reliable means of monitoring the strength of UV radiation at the Earth's surface, which can be used to indicate the potential for skin damage. This qualitative study aims to examine public understanding of the UV Index among Australians who routinely use UV forecast information as well as those who do not. METHODS: Recent use of the SunSmart app (a popular mobile and tablet app that provides UV forecast information) served as a proxy for use of UV forecast information. Six focus groups were conducted with 'new users', who trialled the SunSmart

Evaluation of an open forecasting challenge to assess skill of West Nile virus neuroinvasive disease prediction.

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) is the leading cause of mosquito-borne illness in the continental USA. WNV occurrence has high spatiotemporal variation, and current approaches to targeted control of the virus are limited, making forecasting a public health priority. However, little research has been done to compare strengths and weaknesses of WNV disease forecasting approaches on the national scale. We used forecasts submitted to the 2020 WNV Forecasting Challenge, an open challenge organized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to assess the status of WNV neuroinvasive disease

Performance analysis of mathematical methods used to forecast the 2022 New York City Mpox outbreak.

In mid-2022, New York City (NYC) became the epicenter of the US mpox outbreak. We provided real-time mpox case forecasts to the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to aid in outbreak response. Forecasting methodologies evolved as the epidemic progressed. Initially, lacking knowledge of at-risk population size, we used exponential growth models to forecast cases. Once exponential growth slowed, we used a Susceptible-Exposed-Infectious-Recovered (SEIR) model. Retrospectively, we explored if forecasts could have been improved using an SEIR model in place of our early exponential growth mo

Timely vaccine strain selection and genomic surveillance improve evolutionary forecast accuracy of seasonal influenza A/H3N2.

Evolutionary forecasting models inform seasonal influenza vaccine design by predicting which current genetic variants will dominate in the influenza season 12 months later. Forecasting models depend on hemagglutinin sequences from global public health networks to identify current genetic variants (clades) and estimate clade fitnesses. The lag between collection of a clinical sample and public availability of its sequence averages ∼3 months, complicating the 12-month forecasting problem by reducing our understanding of current clade frequencies. Despite continued methodological improvements to

Forecasting Japanese encephalitis incidence from historical morbidity patterns: Statistical analysis with 27 years of observation in Assam, India.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Japanese encephalitis (JE) is one of the dreaded mosquito-borne viral diseases mostly prevalent in south Asian countries including India. Early warning of the disease in terms of disease intensity is crucial for taking adequate and appropriate intervention measures. The present study was carried out in Dibrugarh district in the state of Assam located in the northeastern region of India to assess the accuracy of selected forecasting methods based on historical morbidity patterns of JE incidence during the past 22 years (1985-2006). METHODS: Four selected forecasting me

Inference of transmission dynamics and retrospective forecast of invasive meningococcal disease.

The pathogenic bacteria Neisseria meningitidis, which causes invasive meningococcal disease (IMD), predominantly colonizes humans asymptomatically; however, invasive disease occurs in a small proportion of the population. Here, we explore the seasonality of IMD and develop and validate a suite of models for simulating and forecasting disease outcomes in the United States. We combine the models into multi-model ensembles (MME) based on the past performance of the individual models, as well as a naive equally weighted aggregation, and compare the retrospective forecast performance over a six-mon

[The use of Bayes' theorem in controlling the coming epidemic peak of epidemic meningitis in the 1980s].

To control the coming epidemic peak of epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis (ECM) in the 1980s in the regions with 100 million population in China, the mathematical models based upon Bayes' theorem (BT) were established and used respectively in provincial, regional and county's level. Reports of ECM from each ten-day's period or each month during the meningitis season were analysed to create forecast models. Records of ECM vaccinating rate in previous years were fully taken into account to modify the theoretical values. Calibration, split-sample, random-sample selection, as well as actual forecas

An exploration of challenges associated with machine learning for time series forecasting of COVID-19 community spread using wastewater-based epidemiological data.

Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has gained increasing attention as a complementary tool to conventional surveillance methods with potential for significant resource and labour savings when used for public health monitoring. Using WBE datasets to train machine learning algorithms and develop predictive models may also facilitate early warnings for the spread of outbreaks. The challenges associated with using machine learning for the analysis of WBE datasets and timeseries forecasting of COVID-19 were explored by running Random Forest (RF) algorithms on WBE datasets across 108 sites in five

Bayesian Forecasting Tool to Predict the Need for Antidote in Acute Acetaminophen Overdose.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Acetaminophen (APAP) overdose is the leading cause of acute liver injury in the United States. Patients with elevated plasma acetaminophen concentrations (PACs) require hepatoprotective treatment with N-acetylcysteine (NAC). These patients have been primarily risk-stratified using the Rumack-Matthew nomogram. Previous studies of acute APAP overdoses found that the nomogram failed to accurately predict the need for the antidote. The objectives of this study were to develop a population pharmacokinetic (PK) model for APAP following acute overdose and evaluate the utility of popu

Real-time forecasting the trajectory of monkeypox outbreaks at the national and global levels, July-October 2022.

BACKGROUND: Beginning May 7, 2022, multiple nations reported an unprecedented surge in monkeypox cases. Unlike past outbreaks, differences in affected populations, transmission mode, and clinical characteristics have been noted. With the existing uncertainties of the outbreak, real-time short-term forecasting can guide and evaluate the effectiveness of public health measures. METHODS: We obtained publicly available data on confirmed weekly cases of monkeypox at the global level and for seven countries (with the highest burden of disease at the time this study was initiated) from the Our World

Associations of hurricane exposure and forecasting with impaired birth outcomes.

Early forecasts give people in a storm's path time to prepare. Less is known about the cost to society when forecasts are incorrect. In this observational study, we examine over 700,000 births in the path of Hurricane Irene and find exposure was associated with impaired birth outcomes. Additional warning time was associated with decreased preterm birth rates for women who experienced intense storm exposures documenting a benefit of avoiding a type II forecasting error. A larger share of this at-risk population experienced a type I forecasting error where severe physical storm impacts were anti

Equities and Inequities Inherent in Wastewater Surveillance Systems for Public Health: New York State, 2020-2024.

Objectives. To evaluate equity in wastewater-based infectious disease surveillance, including equity of inclusion, outbreak detection, and disease forecasting. Methods. We assessed New York State's wastewater surveillance network using census tract-level data to compare social vulnerability and environmental burden across included, sewered but excluded, and unsewered communities during the scale-up of the network (2020-2024) and under changing coverage scenarios. We modeled outbreak detection equity by estimating outbreak sizes required for 95% confidence in the detection of hypothetical patho

Past, current, and future trends in the prevalence of primary sclerosing cholangitis and inflammatory bowel disease across England (2015-2027): a nationwide, population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is one of the leading indications for liver transplantation in Europe, and a major risk factor for cancer in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, it is not known how the epidemiology of PSC will change as that of IBD evolves. The aim of this study is to provide nationwide statistics on the past and current prevalence of PSC and IBD across England, and forecast how this is likely to change over time. METHODS: We accessed and analysed a nationwide population-based administrative healthcare registry, which houses prospectively accrued data s

Environmentally related diseases and the possibility of valuation of their social costs.

The risks of the morbidity of the asbestos-related lung cancer was estimated in the general population of Poles as the result of increased exposure to asbestos fibers during the removal of asbestos-cement products and the possibility of the valuation of the social costs related to this risk. The prediction of the new incidences was made using linear regression model. The forecast shows that to the end of 2030 about 3,500 new cases of lung cancer can be expected as a result of occupational exposure to asbestos in the past which makes together with paraoccupational exposure about 14.000 new case

Growth, instability and future outlook of livestock population and products in Bangladesh.

In the changing agri-food system, livestock play an important role, providing not only protein and micronutrients but also organic fertilizers, employment, and women's empowerment in many developing countries including Bangladesh. Reliable forecasting of livestock populations and products is necessary to inform policy decisions related to food security, supply, demand, and imports and exports, as well as self-sufficiency goals and associated inter- and intra-regional trade opportunities. However, robust long-term projections for livestock systems remain limited in the literature. Therefore, th

Forecasting stress transitions using ecological momentary assessment data and machine learning.

Stress is associated with many negative effects, including inadequate sleep, reduced learning and memory, and a higher risk of mental health conditions. Given these effects, it is important to explore effective strategies for stress management and intervention. One promising approach is the use of ecological momentary assessments (EMAs), which allow us to measure an individuals' experiences in their natural environments, offering valuable data to inform just-in-time adaptive interventions (JITAIs). Machine learning can further enhance JITAIs by forecasting stress-related emotional states, enab
