Characterization of trichuris species from porcupine (Hystrix cristata) at zoological garden of Spain.

Population of Trichuris sp. isolated from Hystrix cristata was analyzed based on morphological, biometrical characteristics and mitochondrial (cox1, cob, rrnL) and ribosomal (ITS1) (rDNA) region sequences. Morphological and biometrical results revealed that Trichuris sp. from H. cristata present a high similarity with Trichuris landak from Hystrix javanica and less similarity with other Trichuris species from porcupine species (Trichuris hystricis, Trichuris lenkorani and Trichuris mettami). The lack of molecular data corresponding to Trichuris species that parasitize the porcupine (genus Hyst

Ectoparasite load in the crested porcupine Hystrix cristata Linnaeus, 1758 in Central Italy.

The crested porcupine Hystrix cristata is a large body-sized rodent, occurring in Europe only in the Italian Peninsula, where it may have been introduced in early Medieval times. Its parasite fauna is currently poorly known and limited to few anecdotal observations. We have analyzed the ectoparasite load of 165 crested porcupines from Tuscany and Latium (Central Italy). Both captured and road-killed individuals were checked for fleas and ticks. Overall, only 39 porcupines were infested by four species of ticks and five of fleas. Abundance of ectoparasites was higher in areas with higher habita

Hepatic lipidosis and other test findings in two captive adult porcupines (Erethizon dorsatum) dying from a "sudden death syndrome".

Routine postmortem examination and histologic evaluation of tissue sections demonstrated hepatic lipidosis (HL) in 2 adult captive porcupines with a history of sudden death. The male porcupine had a markedly enlarged pale liver that microscopically showed large unilocular vacuoles within hepatocellular cytoplasm. The periparturient female had similar but less marked hepatic lesions and an incidental pulmonary mycosis. These findings suggest HL as an important differential of spontaneous death in captive porcupines. It is hypothesized that in addition to the widely documented causes, HL in capt

Infection by Histoplasma capsulatum and Candida tropicalis in a Coendou longicaudatus boliviensis (neotropical porcupine).

Fungal diseases associated with wild animals have been described, showing increased frequency and mortality or change in populations at risk. The new animal host in fungal infection is an important epidemiologic issue to understand the transmission and spread of fungus in the environment and the threat to public health. Histoplasmosis is a mycosis widely distributed throughout the world with a respiratory and systemic presentation reported in domestic and wild mammals, and is potentially fatal in immunosuppressed and immunocompetent individuals humans and not humans. Candidiasis is an opportun

Intracardiac Porcupine Quill Migration in a Dog: Multimodality Imaging Findings and Surgical Management.

The porcupine is a nocturnal quill-bearing rodent common throughout Italy. When threatened, it defends itself by erecting its quills, rattling its tail, and running sideways or backyard into predators. The quills are released upon contact with assailants and tend to migrate into several body tissues or cavities due to the unique inverted cuticles (crenate) directed downwards to the quill base (a sort of "harpoon effect"). Intracardiac migration of porcupine quills has been reported in a few dogs with severe clinical signs. This case report describes a single porcupine quill [Hystrix cristata,

Multiple requirements of the focal dermal hypoplasia gene porcupine during ocular morphogenesis.

Wnt glycoproteins control key processes during development and disease by activating various downstream pathways. Wnt secretion requires post-translational modification mediated by the O-acyltransferase encoded by the Drosophila porcupine homolog gene (PORCN). In humans, PORCN mutations cause focal dermal hypoplasia (FDH, or Goltz syndrome), an X-linked dominant multisystem birth defect that is frequently accompanied by ocular abnormalities such as coloboma, microphthalmia, or even anophthalmia. Although genetic ablation of Porcn in mouse has provided insight into the etiology of defects cause

Spinal Epidural Empyema Associated with Bite Wounds in an Indian Crested Porcupine (Hystrix indica).

Spinal epidural empyema (SEE) is an uncommon but potentially severe cause of spinal cord compression and neurological dysfunction in veterinary patients. Bite wounds involving the vertebral column may result in deep tissue contamination, paraspinal abscessation, and secondary epidural infection; however, such injuries are poorly described in wildlife species. We report a case of SEE associated with chronically infected bite wounds in an adult Indian crested porcupine (Hystrix indica) with paraplegia. Physical and neurological examinations revealed exudative paravertebral wounds, paraplegia wit

Brazilian porcupinepox virus infection in a free-ranging neotropical porcupine in Mato Grosso, Brazil.

Although the novel Brazilian porcupinepox virus (BPoPV) can infect wild porcupines, its lethality and zoonotic potential are not well-established. In May 2021, a free-ranging neotropical porcupine (Coendou longicaudatus boliviensis) rescued from the natural savanna in the Brazilian Cerrado, Mato Grosso State, was presented with a lethal poxviral infection. Clinical signs and PCR detection of BPoPV supported the diagnosis. Poxviral lesions included erythema, exfoliative dermatitis, and erosions involving mainly the face, hindlimb, and vulva. Histologically, the lesions consisted of proliferativ

Isolation of Leptospira serovar Pomona from a crested porcupine (Hystrix cristata, L., 1758).

Pathogenic Leptospira is widespread in rodents, the most studied reservoir and the main hosts involved in its transmission. In Italy, among rodents, Hystrix cristata (crested porcupine) is the largest species and it is distributed all over the country. In this paper, the isolation and characterization of pathogenic Leptospira spp. from the kidney of H. cristata is reported for the first time. During Autumn 2018, Leptospira detection by real-time PCR and isolation were performed from kidneys of two died female porcupines (an adult and a porcupette). Only for porcupette kidney sample, real-time

Opposing actions of renal tubular- and myeloid-derived porcupine in obstruction-induced kidney fibrosis.

Wnt/β-catenin signaling is essential in the pathogenesis of renal fibrosis. We previously reported inhibition of the Wnt O-acyl transferase porcupine, required for Wnt secretion, dramatically attenuates kidney fibrosis in the murine unilateral ureteral obstruction model. Here, we investigated the tissue-specific contributions of porcupine to renal fibrosis and inflammation in ureteral obstruction using mice with porcupine deletion restricted to the kidney tubular epithelium or infiltrating myeloid cells. Obstruction of the ureter induced the renal mRNA expression of porcupine and downstream ta

Enhanced targeting of CML stem and progenitor cells by inhibition of porcupine acyltransferase in combination with TKI.

Tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) has limited efficacy against leukemia stem cells (LSC) responsible for disease propagation, and most CML patients require continued TKI treatment to maintain remission. LSC maintenance is related, at least in part, to signals from the bone marrow microenvironment (BMM). Our previous studies have shown that Wnt signaling from the BMM contributes to preservation of CML LSC following TKI treatment. Secretion of Wnt ligands requires their modification by the O-acyl transferase Porcupine (PORCN). Here we investigated the ac

Porcupine quills in raccoons as an indicator of rabies, distemper, or both diseases: disease management implications.

A relationship was detected between the presence of embedded porcupine quills and the diagnosis of rabies in raccoons in eastern Canada during 1999-2004. No relationship was found between the presence of quills in raccoons and the diagnosis of canine distemper. Raccoons with embedded quills should be submitted for rabies testing.

Toxoplasmosis in a free-ranging hairy dwarf porcupine (Sphiggurus spinosus) with a potential novel genotype.

Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic disease caused by the ubiquitous coccidia Toxoplasma gondii. Rodents play an important role in maintaining its life cycle, as they are one of the main diet sources for felids (wild and domestic), the unique definitive hosts. However, reports of toxoplasmosis in porcupines (Order Rodentia) are uncommon, with gaps concerning its pathophysiology. South America is the continent with the greatest genetic diversity of rodents and T. gondii. A free-ranging hairy dwarf porcupine was admitted to a wildlife rescue centre with a history of trauma. During rehabilitation, the an

Limitation of Computed Tomography in Identifying Intranasal Porcupine Quills in a Dog (Canis lupus familiaris).

A 6 yr old, spayed female, Rhodesian ridgeback was presented for a 6-8 wk history of serous nasal discharge after being quilled by a porcupine. Physical exam revealed mid dorsal maxilla sensitivity. Computed tomography showed a normal nasal cavity. Rhinoscopy revealed three porcupine quills which were removed from the nasal cavities. The patient's clinical signs had improved dramatically at 1 wk follow-up. This case demonstrates the limitations of computed tomography for diagnosing intranasal porcupine quills and the importance of pursuing rhinoscopy in patients with clinical signs of nasal di

Echinococcus ortleppi, the cattle strain in a crested porcupine (Hystrix cristata): A new host record.

Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato, a dog tapeworm is a species complex causing cystic echinococcosis or hydatid disease in a great variety of mammalian intermediate hosts, including humans. This complex comprises five species including Echinococcus ortleppi (G5 genotype or cattle strain). In the present paper, we report the first case of infection with the larval stage of latter cestode in a captive crested porcupine (Hystrix cristata), molecularly confirmed by PCR and sequencing of the cox1 and nad1 genes. The food contaminated with the parasite's eggs is the most likely source of the infect

Pharmacological inhibition of porcupine induces regression of experimental skin fibrosis by targeting Wnt signalling.

OBJECTIVES: Wnt signalling has been implicated in activating a fibrogenic programme in fibroblasts in systemic sclerosis (SSc). Porcupine is an O-acyltransferase required for secretion of Wnt proteins in mammals. Here, we aimed to evaluate the antifibrotic effects of pharmacological inhibition of porcupine in preclinical models of SSc. METHODS: The porcupine inhibitor GNF6231 was evaluated in the mouse models of bleomycin-induced skin fibrosis, in tight-skin-1 mice, in murine sclerodermatous chronic-graft-versus-host disease (cGvHD) and in fibrosis induced by a constitutively active transform
