Intrauterine USG examination becomes more and more important in diagnosing developmental lesions of cerebral nervous tissue. However, CT-imaging is a method of choice, especially after parietal closure (13, 16). The character and etiology of porencephaly, congenital or acquired, is diversiform and often difficult to recognize (18). This paper presents an attempt at assessing different forms of porencephaly, taking into account congenital hydrocephalus in children by means of CT-imaging.

A formal inquiry on the health state of 1206 legally adopted children from Indonesia revealed cerebral palsy in 9 (0.9% of 1029 responses obtained), including two who had died. CT examination performed in 7 cases was abnormal in all. Four types of lesions were seen: 1. Bilateral full thickness porencephalies (BFTP lesion) in 4 cases, amounting to 0.4% of the total population on which response was obtained. 2. Full thickness porencephaly of the area of one internal carotid artery in 1 case. 3. Schizencephaly-like lesion in 1 case, confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging. 4. Supratentorial midli

In congenital porencephalies, diverticulation of the lateral ventricle is a dynamic process producing compression and stretching of the brain tissue bordering the diverticulum, bulging of the overlying skull, macrocephaly, and occasionally progessive neurologic signs (hemiplegia, raised intracranial pressure), even when the rest of the ventricular system is not dilated and the CSF pressure is normal. Ventriculoperitoneal shunting can result in remarkable improvement of focal motor deficits and may apparently also play a beneficial role on further mental development. Successive computed tomogra

The factors underlying acute infantile hemiplegia are seldom identified. Coxsackie A9 focal encephalitis was documented for the first time in a 3-month-old infant with fever, hemiconvulsions, and hemiplegia followed by a static motor deficit and epilepsy. It has been suggested that the acute infantile hemiplegia associated with encephalitis results from an arteritis or venous sinus thrombosis with subsequent cerebral infarction. However, this was not observed in our patient. Rather, a series of brain scans, computerized tomograms, and a cerebral angiogram clearly documented the evolution of a

Gould syndrome is an autosomal dominant syndrome due to a COL4A1 or COL4A2 mutation that is commonly characterised by familial porencephaly, seizures, intracranial haemorrhages, cataracts, nephropathies and more. There have been up to 137 identified patients based on a review of the literature. In this case, we describe a male infant that presents with hemiparesis, developmental delay and gait abnormalities at his well-child check. Referral to neurology and a subsequent MRI demonstrated porencephaly and ocular lens abnormalities. Genetic sequencing uncovered a mutation to the COL4A1 gene, sugg

Four unrelated infants with neonatal thrombocytopenia associated with congenital blindness and porencephaly have been seen over an 18-year period. The association of congenital blindness with neonatal thrombocytopenia has not previously been reported. All children had clinical purpura in the neonatal period; in three cases, thrombocytopenia was confirmed, while in one case, the diagnosis of thrombocytopenia was presumptive; in two cases, there was evidence of circulating maternal serum platelet isoantibodies. Extensive investigation for intrauterine infection was negative in the three cases wi

Four children with a complex brain malformation including absence of the septum pellucidum and porencephalies are reported. All patients presented with congenital hemiplegia or diplegia and mild to severe mental retardation. Ocular motor palsy and epilepsy were additional findings in two children. The diagnosis was made by pneumoencephalography (two patients), by CT scan (one patient) or by both techniques ((one patient). The neuroradiological images, especially those obtained by CT scan, are described. Previously reported cases with pathological confirmation are reviewed and compared with the

Fifteen pregnant cows were inoculated subcutaneously and intravenously between 101-147 days of gestation with the wild-type Wesselsbron disease virus. In addition, 2 foetuses were injected directly through the uterine wall after surgical exposure of the pregnant horn. The clinical symptoms, viraemia and serology in the cows are reported, as also the gross- and histopathology and the virological and serological results of the calves and foetuses. Abortion was not an important manifestation of experimental Wesselsbron disease in cows, as it occurred in 3 animals only. Apart from a short temperat

5 cases of dysgenetic hydrocephaly associated with scalp anomalies are described. This brain-scalp anomaly complex is characterized by congenital hydrocephalus, alopecia or cephalocele in the parietal midline and symmetrical defect of the bilateral posterior cerebral mantle along the midline. Midline septal structures of the cranial cavity and tentorium cerebelli were also defective and replaced by a huge dorsal CSF cavity. Histological features of the covering membrane of the dorsal cyst indicate that this new brain anomaly is the consequence of a porencephalic process and we postulate the 'm

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of brain lesions in 5 dogs and 2 cats characterized by extensive cystic changes of the cerebral hemispheres in terms of a porencephaly are presented. Age at diagnosis ranged from 12 weeks to 7 years. MRI findings were confined to the forebrain. Porencephalic lesions appeared as wedge-shaped parenchymal defects connecting the ventricular system and the subarachnoid space or as large cystic defects in the cerebral hemispheres. Although in two adult dogs the porencephalic lesions were asymptomatic, the other animals showed clinical symptoms depending on t

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to describe leukoencephalopathy, lacunar infarcts, microbleeds and macrobleeds in the context of a collagen IV A1 mutation.
METHODS: We examined a family with autosomal dominant porencephaly, in whom a defect in collagen IV A1 was detected recently. The patients underwent neurological, ophthalmological, and cardiological examinations and magnetic resonance imaging of the brain. Electron microscopy of a skin biopsy was performed. Extensive laboratory screening was performed for thrombophilia and increased bleeding tendency.
RESULTS: The porencephaly

A boy, born after 41 weeks of gestation, presented with splenomegaly, microcephaly and chorioretinitis accompanied by immaturity signs. His mother was in good health but her previous pregnancy had been aborted owing to rubella. Laboratory data, including serological and virological evidence, confirmed the diagnosis of fetal cytomegalovirus infection. CT scan indicated a large cyst in the left temporal lobe and periventricular calcifications. At about 8 months of age, convulsions were noticed which were not controlled effectively by medication. There was spastic rigidity without significant psy

COL4A1-associated disorders encompass a wide range of hereditary vasculopathy, including porencephaly and HANAC (adult-onset hemorrhagic stroke with cerebral aneurysm and retinal arterial tortuosity, renal cysts, and thenar muscle cramp). It remains elusive whether or not porencephaly and HANAC are molecularly distinctive disorders due to different classes of mutations. We report on a girl with porencephaly and an episode of microangiopathic hemolysis in infancy and her father with HANAC, both of whom had a heterozygous missense mutation of COL4A1 (c.3715G>A, p.G1239R). The current observation

BACKGROUND: Congenital abnormalities in cattle, which include lesions in the central nervous system, usually occur sporadically. Porencephaly, a condition characterised by the presence of cystic fluid-filled cavities within brain tissue, is often virus-induced, but rare inherited forms have been identified in other species. Thirty-four calves affected by porencephaly were reported in Limousin cattle in Great Britain and 16 underwent clinicopathological investigation. We aimed to: (1) characterize the disorder phenotype, (2) investigate its possible genetic cause, and (3) determine the frequenc

INTRODUCTION: Foetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a complex malformative disease caused by the teratogenic effect of alcohol consumed during pregnancy. Mothers are frequently reluctant to admit alcohol consumption during pregnancy. During infancy and particularly during neonatal period, differential diagnosis is difficult.
PATIENT CONCERNS: This case is represented by an Italian neonate boy small for gestational age, born by caesarean section at a gestational age of 37 weeks + 6 days by neglect and single-parent pregnancy. On physical examination, he presented particular facial feature

Porencephaly is a rare central nervous system (CNS) abnormality that can be caused by an intraparenchymal destructive process or a developmental defect. Here we report on a prenatal ultrasound diagnosis of complex CNS abnormalities including agenesis of the corpus callosum, agenesis of the cerebellar vermis, bilateral hydrocephaly, and bilateral porencephaly in fetus at 33 weeks' gestation. The diagnosis of familial orofaciodigital syndrome type I (OFD I) was raised after fetal autopsy, clinical examination of the family, and the X-linked dominant inheritance pattern. This is the fourth report
