Influence of energy drinks and alcohol on post-exercise heart rate recovery and heart rate variability.

BACKGROUND: Media have anecdotally reported that drinking energy drinks in combination with alcohol and exercise could cause sudden cardiac death. This study investigated changes in the electrocardiogram (ECG) and heart rate variability after intake of an energy drink, taken in combination with alcohol and exercise. METHODS: Ten healthy volunteers (five men and five women aged 19-30) performed maximal bicycle ergometer exercise for 30 min after: (i) intake of 0.75 l of an energy drink mixed with alcohol; (ii) intake of energy drink; and, (iii) no intake of any drink. ECG was continuously reco

The 4R's Framework of Nutritional Strategies for Post-Exercise Recovery: A Review with Emphasis on New Generation of Carbohydrates.

Post-exercise recovery is a broad term that refers to the restoration of training capacity. After training or competition, there is fatigue accumulation and a reduction in sports performance. In the hours and days following training, the body recovers and performance is expected to return to normal or improve. ScienceDirect, PubMed/MEDLINE, and Google Scholar databases were reviewed to identify studies and position declarations examining the relationship between nutrition and sports recovery. As an evidence-based framework, a 4R's approach to optimizing post-exercise recovery was identified: (

A evidence-based approach to selecting post-exercise cryostimulation techniques for improving exercise performance and fatigue recovery: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

RATIONALE: Cryostimulation involves using water environments and low temperatures as intervention mediums, with main methods including CWI (cold water immersion), CWT (contrast water therapy), and WBC (whole-body cryostimulation). Previous systematic reviews focused on the effect of cryostimulation on muscle fatigue and sports performance. However, studies on the selection of different cryostimulation methods and their intervention effects present inconsistent results. INTRODUCTION: To systematically review and methodologically appraise the quality and effectiveness of existing intervention s

Temperature-dependent effects of post-exercise cold-water immersion on recovery: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cold-water immersion (CWI) is widely used as a recovery intervention to facilitate post-exercise recovery; however, inconsistent conclusions remain regarding temperature-dependent effects. Therefore, this meta-analysis aimed to comprehensively examine the effects of CWI on post-exercise recovery, focusing on delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and biochemical markers of muscle damage, including creatine kinase (CK) and myoglobin (Mb), and to quantitatively compare the effects across different water temperatures. METHODS: This study was conducted as a systematic review and meta-an

Prognostic value of the post-exercise heart rate recovery and BHDE-index in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

BACKGROUND: The BODE index, consisting of body mass index (B), airflow obstruction (O), dyspnea score (D), and exercise capacity (E), can predict outcomes in COPD. However, when spirometry was restricted to prevent cross-infection such as COVID-19 pandemic, a modified index would be needed. Because cardiovascular dysfunction is associated with poor clinical outcomes in COPD, we conducted a novel BHDE-index by replacing spirometry with post-exercise heart rate recovery (HRR, H) and evaluated its predictive performance in this observational study. METHODS: From January 2019 to December 2019, en

Compression-induced improvements in post-exercise recovery are associated with enhanced blood flow, and are not due to the placebo effect.

The aim of this study was to investigate the physiological effects of compression tights on blood flow following exercise and to assess if the placebo effect is responsible for any acute performance or psychological benefits. Twenty-two resistance-trained participants completed a lower-body resistance exercise session followed by a 4 h recovery period. Participants were assigned a post-exercise recovery intervention of either compression tights applied for 4 h (COMP), placebo tablet consumed every hour for 4 h (PLA) or control (CON). Physiological (markers of venous return, muscle blood flow,

Preservation of Septo-Hippocampal Theta Oscillations via Cholinergic Protection Underlies Cognitive Recovery After Physical Exercise Post-Cardiac Arrest.

BACKGROUND: Significant cognitive impairment follows cardiac arrest, yet few interventions restore memory. We previously demonstrated that physical exercise (PE) after asphyxial cardiac arrest (ACA) mitigates memory deficits and cell loss in the septal nuclei, but not in the hippocampus in rats. Given the critical role of the septum in modulating hippocampal theta oscillations, essential for memory, we hypothesize that PE preserves memory by safeguarding septal pacemaker neurons and septo-hippocampal theta activity. METHODS: Adult male and female rats underwent 8 minutes of ACA or sham surger

Post-exercise heart rate recovery and its speed are associated with resting-reactivity cardiovagal modulation in healthy women.

The present study sought to expand upon prior investigations of the relationship between post-exercise heart rate recovery (HRR) and cardiovagal resting-reactivity modulation. HRR from 1st to 5th min after maximal exercise test was correlated with a cardiovagal index of heart rate variability (SD1) at resting (supine and orthostatic positions) and its reactivity after the orthostatic stress test in 34 healthy women. Statistical analysis employed non-parametric tests with a p-value set at 5%. HRR, ∆%HRR, and coefficient of HRR (CHRR) at the 3rd and 5th min correlated with SD1 and SD1n (normaliz

Neurogenesis promoted by the CD200/CD200R signaling pathway following treadmill exercise enhances post-stroke functional recovery in rats.

Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability worldwide; survivors often show sensorimotor and cognitive deficits. Therapeutic exercise is the most common treatment strategy for rehabilitating patients with stroke via augmentation of neurogenesis, angiogenesis, neurotrophic factors expression, and synaptogenesis. Neurogenesis plays important roles in sensorimotor and cognitive functional recovery, and can be promoted by exercise; however, the mechanism underlying this phenomenon remains unclear. In this study, we explored the effects of treadmill exercise on sensorimotor and cognitive func
