Preceding high-intensity interval exercise alters cooling responses during temperate-water immersion after exercise-induced hyperthermia.

Post-exercise cooling after exercise-induced hyperthermia is commonly evaluated by the rate of core temperature decline. However, cooling may also depend on the physiological state at the onset of cooling. This study examined whether preceding exercise condition influences responses to 20 °C temperate-water immersion after exercise-induced hyperthermia. Fifteen recreationally active adults completed randomized crossover trials involving low-intensity exercise with restricted evaporative heat loss and high-intensity interval exercise in a hot environment (40 °C, 20 % relative humidity). Ischaemic pre-conditioning improves workload, fatigue and recovery in team sport: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial.

Ischaemic preconditioning (IPC) is reported to improve performance, fatigue and recovery, yet evidence in team-sport settings remains limited. We examined the effects of repeated IPC on external workload, perceptual strain and recovery during ecologically valid Gaelic football training. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover design, 13 male players completed two identical pitch sessions following IPC (3 × 5 min 220 mmHg occlusions; 48 h, 24 h and 30 min pre-session) or placebo. Global positioning system-quantified external load, and perceptual outcomes (fatigue, soreness,

Effects of carbohydrate-electrolyte solutions with and without L-menthol on hydration and performance recovery following simulated firefighting exercise.

BACKGROUND: Firefighting tasks performed in full protective equipment (PPE) impose extreme thermal and physical strain, providing a model of high-intensity exercise with substantial fluid and electrolyte loss. This study compared the effects of plain water (W), a carbohydrate-electrolyte solution (CES), and a menthol-supplemented carbohydrate-electrolyte solution (MCES) on hydration and performance recovery during the first hour of post-exercise recovery. METHODS: Twenty-four male firefighters completed a standardized simulated firefighting protocol in protective clothing. Participants were r

Effects of Immediate and Delayed Repeated Cold Exposure After Physical Exertion: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Local cryotherapy is widely used to support recovery after exercise-induced muscle damage, but the optimal timing of cold application remains unclear. This study evaluated whether immediate or delayed local cooling influences recovery from exercise-induced muscle fatigue. METHODS: Forty-eight healthy adults (39 women, 9 men; age 22 ± 3 years) performed a single-leg eccentric leg-extension protocol to induce delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and were randomized to immediate cooling (ICG), delayed cooling (DCG; starting 24 h post-exercise), or control (CG) in a 1:1:1 ratio. Muscle Massage Adding Capacitive Resistive Electric Transfer Therapy in Active or Sham Condition for Post-Exercise Recovery in Athletes: A Crossover Clinical Trial.

The increasing demands of elite sports reduce recovery time, impair performance, and increase injury risk. Efficient lactate transport is essential for postexercise recovery. Capacitive resistive electric transfer (CRET) therapy enhances deep tissue heating, induces vasodilation, and promotes circulation. To evaluate whether adding active CRET to a standardized muscle recovery massage, compared with the same massage plus sham CRET, influences indicators of muscle recovery following a maximal anaerobic effort test. A randomized, single-blind, sham-controlled, and crossover clinical trial was co

Vibration Rolling, Non-Vibration Rolling, and Static Stretching for Delayed- Onset Muscle Soreness on Physiological Changes and Recovery of Athletic Performance in Runners.

This study examined the effects of vibrating foam rollers (VR) on delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS), inflammatory response, and athletic performance. Eighteen experienced adult runners (average running experience: 6 years) participated in a crossover study with three recovery interventions: vibrating roller (VR), non-vibrating roller (NVR), and static stretching (SS). DOMS was induced through downhill treadmill running. Each intervention targeted four muscle groups bilaterally (gluteal, anterior/posterior thigh, anterior/posterior calf) for 30 seconds per group using a vibration frequency o

Post-exercise rehydration: a randomized cross-over trial comparing a 100% fruit juice, a glucose-based sports drink, and water.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies indicate that sports drinks may improve rehydration, compared to water, an effect likely achieved by manufacturing sports drinks to contain carbohydrates and sodium. However, there is a growing preference for natural products and a "food first" approach to sports nutrition. Fruit juices naturally contain similar concentrations of carbohydrates to sports drinks, but fruit juices may produce a more stable blood glucose profile. Fruit juices also naturally contain electrolytes, particularly potassium, but their potential as effective rehydration alternatives to sports

Passive Blood Flow Restriction Accelerates Muscle Recovery After Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage in Healthy, Recreationally Active Females.

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effects of passive blood flow restriction (pBFR) on indices of exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) following a muscle-damaging protocol. Eighteen females completed 6 visits occurring at the same time of day (±2 hours). Muscle damage was elicited by performing 3 sets of 25 maximal, unilateral, isokinetic (60·s -1 ), concentric-eccentric leg extensions on each leg. Each leg was then randomly assigned to receive pBFR (80% of total arterial occlusion pressure) or sham (20 mmHg) at 0, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours post-EIMD. Indices of EIMD (muscle

Investigating the Effects of a Novel Salmon-Derived Protein Peptide on Markers of Recovery From Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage.

Exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) impairs muscle function and subsequent performance. While research investigating the protective role of animal-derived protein is widespread, investigations into sustainable alternatives are lacking. The present study examined the effects of a novel, salmon-derived protein peptide (SPP) on muscle recovery. In a single-blind, parallel-design, 33 recreationally active adults (age: 23.9 ± 4.0 years, body mass index: 23.7 ± 4.0) were randomly assigned to one of three groups: (a) SPP, (b) whey protein, or (c) carbohydrate control. Acute effects of dietary whey protein supplementation after endurance exercise on serum osteokine and inflammatory cytokine concentrations in endurance runners.

Endurance athletes have an increased risk of bone stress injuries due to high training and energy demands. Endurance training with inadequate recovery triggers a pro-inflammatory response, which can upregulate bone resorption for hours to days. Combined dietary protein and carbohydrate supplementation post-exercise has shown to attenuate bone resorption and pro-inflammatory cytokine responses, though the effect of dietary protein intake alone remains to be elucidated. This randomized cross-over, double-blinded study examined the acute effects of post-exercise protein supplementation on serum c

The Acute Effects of Cold Water Immersion and Percussive Massage Therapy on Neuromuscular Properties and Muscle Soreness after Exercise in Young Male Soccer Players.

Cold water immersion (CWI) and percussive massage therapy (PMT) are commonly used recovery techniques in team sports. In particular, despite its wide use, PMT has been scarcely investigated in the literature, especially regarding neuromuscular measures and in comparison with other techniques. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the acute and short-term effects (24 h) of CWI and PMT on muscle strength, contractile properties, and soreness after exercise. A randomized crossover study was performed on sixteen male soccer players (22 years, 20-27) who participated in three experimental sessio
