Shallow groove technique in sextant pattern femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery.

Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) is a useful technology for anterior segment surgery that creates cleavage planes via photodisruption of ocular tissue. Compared to conventional cataract surgery, FLACS has been thought to potentially improve surgical precision, accuracy, and reproducibility. Its introduction into cataract surgery has enabled the development of new techniques and has been purported to be potentially beneficial in improving surgical safety and providing quicker visual rehabilitation. The purpose of this article is to describe a technique for cataract surgery us

Case report: Surgical and clinical results in bilateral lenticonus due to Alport syndrome.

Alport syndrome (AS) is a genetic disease characterized by hereditary nephritis, sensorineural hearing loss, and ocular anomalies. The most common ocular findings associated with AS include anterior lenticonus, retinal dot-fleck configuration, and corneal posterior polymorphism. Anterior lenticonus is 8 times more common in men with AS than in women. This case report evaluated the clinical and optical results obtained after phacoemulsification (PHACO) surgery and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation performed for bilateral anterior lenticonus due to AS. A 35-year-old male patient had complained

Suprachoroidal injection of a dexamethasone implant in a case of secondary macular oedema.

BackgroundNon-infectious uveitis (NIU) is a common ocular inflammation that frequently leads to Macular oedema (MO). MO can cause irreversible tissue damage and permanent visual impairment. Dexamethasone implant is approved for intravitreal injection (IV) in the treatment of MO. Despite its proven efficacy, IV poses risks of complications. Recently, suprachoroidal injection has emerged as a novel strategy for targeted drug delivery to the posterior segment of the eye, reducing the risk of complications.Case presentationA 70-year-old woman with no history of diabetes underwent left eye cataract

Posterior capsule tears during extracapsular cataract surgery in India.

We determined the incidence in a developing nation of posterior capsule rupture during planned extracapsular cataract surgery and insertion of a posterior chamber intraocular lens. The results, in part, determine whether this complication limits the widespread utility of this procedure in developing nations. We retrospectively reviewed charts of all patients undergoing planned extracapsular cataract surgery during a 6-month period; all patients received surgery as inpatients at the Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai, India, and all were southern Indians. We tried to exclude most patients with prior

[Pseudoexfoliation syndrome--etiopatogenesis and clinical course].

Pseudoexfoliation syndrome is an ocular manifestation of a systemic elastosis. Exact etiology of this condition remains unknown. The basic pathogenetic concept of PEX is a pathological process of the extracellular matrix, characterized by the excessive production of an abnormal extracellular material which aggregates and accumulates and is not degraded in vivo. This material is produced primarily by the non pigmented epithelium of the ciliary body, the posterior iris pigment epithelium, and the preequatorial lens epithelium, while the corneal endothelium, trabecular cells, and vascular endothe
