Role of Scheimpflug imaging for assessment of posterior lens capsule in pediatric traumatic cataract.

PURPOSE: To find the accuracy of Scheimpflug imaging for the evaluation of posterior lens capsule and to assess the incidence of pre-existing posterior capsular tear (PCT) in pediatric traumatic cataracts. METHODS: It was a prospective, non-randomized, and interventional study. Scheimpflug imaging was done preoperatively to detect pre-existing PCT in pediatric traumatic cataracts after blunt trauma. All patients underwent cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation. Intraoperatively, the posterior capsule status was noted and compared with the preoperative Scheimpflug images. RESU

Detachment of intact posterior lens capsule: secondary to contusion in penetrating ocular trauma.

Severe contusion of the lens in a penetrating scleral injury of the eye of a young patient resulted in separation and bleb-like detachment of the posterior lens capsule with subcapsular accumulation of a fibrin-containing exudate. This separation of the posterior lens capsule resulting from increase of permeability with subcapsular fluid accumulation is believed to represent a possible basic mechanism of posterior lens involvement without capsule rupture secondary to ocular trauma.

Cytoskeletal drugs prevent posterior capsular opacification in human lens capsule in vitro.

BACKGROUND: To determine whether the cytoskeletal drugs H-7 and Latrunculin B (LAT-B) inhibit posterior capsular opacification (PCO) in the cultured human lens capsular bag. METHODS: Following extracapsular cataract (lens) extraction in human donor eyes, the capsular bag was prepared and cultured by standard techniques. Forty-eight capsular bags were studied, of which 13 were treated with H-7 (50, 100 or 300 μM), 12 with 1% BSS (vehicle of H-7), 11 with LAT-B (2, 5 or 10 μM), and 12 with 0.25% DMSO (vehicle of LAT-B). Forty out of the 48 capsular bags were from paired eyes of 20 donors, with

Evaluation of posterior lens capsule by 20-MHz ultrasound probe in traumatic cataract.

PURPOSE: To investigate the accuracy of echography with a 20-MHz probe for evaluation of posterior lens capsule in traumatic cataract before surgery. DESIGN: Prospective interventional case series. METHODS: This study consisted of 43 eyes with traumatic cataract that were scheduled to undergo surgery. In all cases, cataract was dense enough to prevent visualization of the posterior lens capsule. Echography was performed using a 20-MHz probe to detect rupture of the posterior lens capsule. All patients subsequently underwent cataract extraction and intraoperative findings of the posterior len

Use of the neodymium-YAG laser to open the posterior capsule after lens implant surgery: a preliminary report.

The use of a neodymium-YAG laser is described for opening the opacified posterior capsule in a pseudophakic eye. Both pigmented and nonpigmented ocular tissues were cut without causing adverse thermal effects and without opening the eye. The laser's instantaneous release of energy causes total ionization of the medium and formation of a plasma, followed by a hydrodynamic shock wave originating at the energy zone boundary. The temperature at the site of laser contact cannot exceed 2 x 10(-3) degrees C, which is not harmful to the eye. Further, this procedure requires no anesthesia and does not

Glued intraocular lens scaffolding for Soemmerring ring removal in aphakia with posterior capsule defect.

UNLABELLED: We describe using the glued intraocular lens (IOL) scaffolding technique to remove Soemmerring ring during secondary IOL implantation in aphakic eyes with associated posterior capsule defect following previous pediatric cataract surgery. Vitrectomy is performed, and the remnants of the posterior capsule are removed from the visual axis. A 3-piece foldable IOL is injected below the Soemmerring ring, and glued transscleral haptic fixation of the IOL is performed. The Soemmerring ring is dislodged from the periphery with a Sinskey hook and brought into the center of the pupil over the

Effects of dexamethasone on posterior capsule opacification-like changes in a rat lens explant model.

PURPOSE: Many patients whose sight is initially restored by cataract surgery eventually suffer secondary loss of vision because of posterior capsule opacification (PCO; after-cataract), a condition in which lens epithelial cells left behind at surgery become aberrant and migrate into the light path. The aim of this study was to determine whether dexamethasone (DEX), an anti-inflammatory agent widely used before and after cataract surgery, influences the behavior of lens cells under conditions relevant to PCO development. METHODS: An established rat PCO model was used in which explanted epithe

[Comparative evaluation of treating opacities of posterior lens capsule in pseudophakia by surgical and laser methods].

The authors presented results of treatment of 230 cases of posterior lens capsule opacities after cataract extraction with IOL implantation. In 200 cases, Nd: YAG laser of Q-Switch type was applied, in 30 capsulotomy was made with classic surgical method through pars plana. Both methods were highly efficacious. The most common complications after laser capsulotomy were traces on the lens and increase of the intraocular pressure. No retinal complications were observed. After surgical incisions of the posterior lens capsule, in some cases inflammatory reactions occurred and, in 3, retinal compli

Clinical features and intraocular lens material properties for posterior capsule opacification risk prediction.

Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO) remains a prevalent long-term complication following surgery for cataract, the world's primary blinding disease, significantly compromising visual outcomes. Although intraocular lens (IOL) material is a recognized risk factor, large-scale datasets linking granular material properties with longitudinal clinical outcomes remain scarce. Here, we present a real-world dataset comprising clinical records from 16,970 patients (22,709 eyes) who underwent cataract surgery at the Eye Center of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine

Late anterior traumatic subluxation of a circular in-the-bag intraocular lens associated with lack of posterior capsule opacification.

We report a case of traumatic subluxation of a circular poly(methyl methacrylate) intraocular lens (IOL) 5 years after surgery. Slitlamp examination revealed the lack of epithelial cells or fibrosis in the intact capsule bag. Trauma was minor, and no other complication was found in the eye and orbit. The subluxated IOL was easily relocated in the bag with a hook, revealing the poor capsule sealing. Among the factors ensuring the fixation of IOLs placed in the bag after continuous curvilinear capsulotomy are sealing of the anterior and posterior capsules and proliferation of epithelial cells fr

A Case of Lens and Posterior Capsule Injury in Chandelier-Assisted Scleral Buckling for Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment.

INTRODUCTION: Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) presents as a common ophthalmological emergency that impacts vision and may lead to blindness in the involved eye. Recently, chandelier-assisted scleral buckling (SB) is considered as one of procedures for the management of RRD. Herein, we present a case of acute cataract progression caused by a chandelier light during chandelier-assisted SB for RRD. CASE PRESENTATION: A 69-year-old male patient presented with right eye RRD. The best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was reduced to 20/40 in the right eye, and a retinal tear was observed at th
