What is the effectiveness of primary care interventions in managing postnatal depression in the UK?

BACKGROUND: Postnatal depression (PND) affects around one in 10 women in the UK within 12 months of giving birth. Despite current management, suicide remains the leading cause of maternal deaths between 6 weeks and 12 months, accounting for 39% of cases. AIM: This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions for managing postnatal depression within a primary care setting. METHOD: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRIS

Home-based postnatal care following early hospital discharge: A descriptive study of the health care service midwife home.

OBJECTIVE: At St. Olav's University Hospital in Trondheim, Norway, "Midwife Home" (MH) is an integrated home-based postnatal service for mothers who want early discharge (i.e. 6-24 h) after giving birth. The purpose of our study was to evaluate MH by (1) describing the characteristics of mother-newborn pairs followed up by MH to investigate whether the service has an appropriate target group; (2) describing the number and causes of possible readmissions for safety; (3) investigating whether MH follows the criteria set for the service; and (4) exploring whether the service facilitates continuit

Postnatal Care-associated Echovirus 11 Infection in Malaysia: Severe Disease With Variable Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Echovirus 11 (E11) is a common circulating enterovirus globally and in Malaysia. In recent years, severe neonatal E11 infections have been increasingly reported in Europe and Asia. An increase in severe E11 cases reported in Malaysia highlights significant potential for transmission in postnatal environments in hospitals and the community. METHODS: We present clinical and laboratory findings for 5 neonates admitted with laboratory-confirmed E11 infection in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, between September 2023 and January 2024. E11 was diagnosed by virus culture or polymerase chain react

Determining the influential factors of postnatal care in Bangladesh using multilevel logistic regression.

BACKGROUND: Postnatal care (PNC) is the care of a newborn and mother for up to six weeks from one hour of placenta birth. The postnatal period is one of the most hazardous stages for mothers and their baby's health. The PNC is influenced by several maternal, family, biological, and socio-economic factors and it is necessary to identify the most significant factors of PNC. Therefore, the authors focus on determining the significant determinants of postnatal care in Bangladesh. METHODS AND MATERIALS: This study is based on a secondary dataset extracted from the Bangladesh Demographic and Health

Factors affecting postnatal care service utilization in Pyuthan district: A mixed method study.

The first hours, days, and weeks following childbirth are critical for the well-being of both the mother and newborn. Despite this significance, the postnatal period often receives inadequate attention in terms of quality care provision. In Nepal, the utilization of postnatal care (PNC) services remains a challenging issue. Employing a facility-based concurrent triangulation mixed-method approach, this study aimed to identify factors associated with PNC service utilization, as well as its facilitators and barriers. A quantitative survey involved 243 mothers who had given birth in the six month

Postnatal cord care practices and associated factors in Arba Minch town, southern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Cord care is one component of essential newborn care that reduces newborn morbidity and mortality. Poor cord care practice leads to a large amount of neonatal death due to infection. In Ethiopia, many women give birth at home, where neonates are exposed to unclean cord care practices or application of different traditional substances. Despite the severity of the problem, studies related to postnatal cord care practice are scarce. Hence, this study is aimed to assess umbilical cord care practices and associated factors in the postnatal period in Arba Minch town. OBJECTIVE: To asses

Postnatal ER visits within 30 days-Pattern, risk factors and implications for care.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To (i) reveal care-seeking patterns of emergency room visits within 30 days following childbirth (i.e., identify risk factors that trigger contact with emergency room, visit rate and diagnoses) and (ii) suggest clinical implications for postnatal follow-up. DESIGN: The study had a longitudinal design; it used anonymised data from a county council database on all women in Stockholm County, Sweden, who gave birth in 2013. METHODS: Descriptive and inferential data analysis methods were used. Cox regression was applied to these variables: age when giving birth, diagnostic co

Randomized controlled trial of universal postnatal nurse home visiting: impact on emergency care.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although nurse home visiting has proven efficacious with small samples, scaling up to community populations with diverse families has not yet proven effective. The Durham Connects program was developed in collaboration with community leaders as a brief, universal, postnatal nurse home visiting intervention designed to screen for risk, provide brief intervention, and connect families with more intensive evidence-based services as needed. This study tested program effectiveness in reducing infant emergency medical care between birth and age 12 months. METHODS: All 477

The effect of antenatal care on use of institutional delivery service and postnatal care in Ethiopia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although there are many initiatives to improve maternal health services use, utilization of health facility delivery and postnatal care services is low in Ethiopia. Current evidence at global level showed that antenatal care increases delivery and postnatal care services use. But previous studies in Ethiopia indicate contrasting results. Therefore, this meta-analysis was done to identify the effect of antenatal care on institutional delivery and postnatal care services use in Ethiopia. METHODS: Studies were searched from databases using keywords like place of birth, institutional

Newborn postnatal care: gap in contact and effective coverage and discrepancy in response in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Access to quality postnatal care for newborns is crucial to eliminating preventable neonatal deaths. While some studies have examined contact coverage, there is limited evidence on effective (quality-adjusted) coverage. This study aimed to evaluate the gaps between contact and effective coverage, as well as discrepancies between reported newborn postnatal checks and the interventions received. METHODS: The data were obtained from the Ethiopian Mini-Demography and Health Survey 2019, and a weighted sample of 2,105 women aged 15 to 49 who had given birth within the two years prior to

Postnatal care education in health facilities in Accra, Ghana: perspectives of mothers and providers.

BACKGROUND: The recent use of antenatal care (ANC) has steadily improved in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), but postnatal care (PNC) has been widely underutilized. Most maternal and newborn deaths occur during the critical postnatal period, but PNC does not receive adequate attention or support, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. In Ghana, the majority of mothers attend four ANC assessments, but far fewer receive the four recommended PNC visits. This study sought to understand perceptions toward PNC counselling administered prior to discharge among both mothers and healthcare provide

[To act or not to act? Developments in prenatal and postnatal care for children with spina bifida aperta].

To act or not to act? Developments in prenatal and postnatal care for children with spina bifida aperta Until the middle of the twentieth century, newborns with spina bifida aperta had low chances of survival. Advances in the treatment of hydrocephalus, among other conditions, led to increased chances of survival during the 1960s. This also revealed the downsides of the treatment of spina bifida patients since some considered the quality of life of a number of these patients to be unacceptable. But withholding treatment also had negative consequences, leading to an ethical deadlock. Over the p

Diarrhea and rotavirus infection associated with differing regimens for postnatal care of newborn babies.

Surveillance of 2,041 babies born during 4 winter months in one obstetric hospital in Melbourne, Australia, showed that 215 developed acute diarrhea during the first 2 weeks of life. Babies requiring special care from birth had a high incidence of sporadic diarrhea (36%). The incidence of diarrhea among healthy full-term babies was low if they were "rooming-in" with their mothers (2 to 3%) but high if they were housed in communal nurseries (29%). The most important factor influencing incidence of diarrhea was proximity to other newborn babies and frequency of handling by related adults. Breast

The impact of monetary incentives on referrals by traditional birth attendants for postnatal care in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Gaps in postnatal care use represent missed opportunities to prevent maternal and neonatal death in sub-Saharan Africa. As one in every three non-facility deliveries in Nigeria is assisted by a traditional birth attendant (TBA), and the TBA's advice is often adhered to by their clients, engaging TBAs in advocacy among their clients may increase maternal and neonatal postnatal care use. This study estimates the impact of monetary incentives for maternal referrals by TBAs on early maternal and neonatal postnatal care use (within 48 h of delivery) in Nigeria. METHODS: We conducted a

How women's experiences and perceptions of care influence uptake of postnatal care across sub-Saharan Africa: a qualitative systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The burden of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality is a global health concern with the highest burden documented after childbirth in women and babies living in sub-Saharan Africa. To date, there is limited information on the quality of postnatal care and/or whether evidence-based interventions to improve postnatal care in a way that meets the specific health needs of each mother and her baby have been lacking. There is also limited data related to how quality of care (respectful or disrespectful) influences women's decision to access postnatal care. OBJECTIVE: To systemat

Integration and acceptability of cervical cancer screening as part of postnatal care among women attending postnatal clinics in the Accra Metropolis, Greater Accra Region, Ghana.

Cervical cancer is a recognized preventable disease yet the fourth most common cancer among women globally. This study assessed the integration and acceptability of cervical cancer screening as part of routine sixth-week postnatal care among women attending a postnatal clinic. This was a cross-sectional descriptive study among 347 postpartum women who were attending their 6th-week postnatal visit. A Pap smear test was performed on each consenting study participant. Only conventional cervical smears were performed. The Pap smear samples were taken using a special kit (PAP-PAK Cytology brush kit
