Prevalence of PIMDINAC criteria and associated factors in elderly HIV patients.

INTRODUCTION: Aging of people living with HIV could be related to potentially inappropiate medication prescriptions, drugs interactions and lack of drugs adherence. PIMDINAC criteria seek to jointly analyze these problems. The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence of PIMDINAC criteria in an elderly HIV population. METHODS: Observational, cross-sectional, multicenter study that included patients older than 65 years in pharmacotherapeutic follow-up between February-April 2020. The main endpoint was the percentage of PIMDINAC criteria identified in the study population. RESULTS

Impact of medication reviews on potentially inappropriate medications and associated costs among older women in aged care.

BACKGROUND: The Residential Medication Management Review (RMMR) service is a large investment by the Australian government and involves considerable time commitment. OBJECTIVES: This study determined the impact of RMMRs on the use of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs), benzodiazepines and antidepressants, described patterns of PIM use, and examined costs. METHODS: The study included 5576 participants from the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health from 2005 to 2017. Three generalised estimating equation (GEE) models were specified to separately analyse the impact of RMMRs

Acceptability of patient-centered, multi-disciplinary medication therapy management recommendations: results from the INCREASE randomized study.

BACKGROUND: Polypharmacy and inappropriate medications may be a modifiable risk factor for Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD). Medication therapy management (MTM) interventions may mitigate medication-induced cognitive dysfunction and delay onset of symptomatic impairment. The objective of the current study is to describe an MTM protocol for a patient-centered team intervention (pharmacist and non-pharmacist clinician) in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) directed at delaying the symptomatic onset of ADRD. METHODS: Community dwelling adults 65 + years, non-demented, using ≥ 1

Potentially inappropriate medication use is associated with increased risk of incident disability in healthy older adults.

BACKGROUND: Efforts to minimize medication risks among older adults include avoidance of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs). However, most PIMs research has focused on older people in aged or inpatient care, creating an evidence gap for community-dwelling older adults. To address this gap, we investigated the impact of PIMs use in the ASPirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly (ASPREE) clinical trial cohort. METHODS: Analysis included 19,114 community-dwelling ASPREE participants aged 70+ years (65+ if US minorities) without major cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment, or sign

Potentially inappropriate medication discontinued or changed based on pharmacists' recommendations in older end-stage cancer patients receiving palliative care: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Avoiding potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) can reduce adverse events in older cancer patients receiving palliative care. However, studies have not examined the extent to which pharmacists' recommendations reduce the prescription of PIMs. Therefore, we designed a cross-sectional study to determine the extent to which their recommendations play a role in reducing the prescription of PIMs for older cancer patients receiving palliative care. METHODS: Patients brought their medications with them upon admission to the hospital. These medications were examined by pharmacists a

Polypharmacy and potentially-inappropriate medications are prevalent in the elderly cancer patients receiving systemic cancer therapy and they co-relate with adverse outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: Cancer is the disease of the ageing. Most of the elderly cancer patients have pre-existing illnesses requiring complexity of medical care. Excessive medications would lead not only futility, but also result in adverse outcomes especially if such over-prescription is not appropriate. This study was intended to determine the prevalence of polypharmacy (PP) and potentially-inappropriate medications (PIMs) among elderly cancer patients eligible for active cancer care and their associations with hospitalization and mortality. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study c

The prevalence and factors associated with potentially inappropriate medication use in Chinese older outpatients with cancer with multimorbidity.

BACKGROUND: Multimorbidity and polypharmacy is a general problem in older patients; they increase the prevalence of potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) use. But PIM use in patients with cancer is less clear. This study aimed to examine the prevalence and the predictors of PIM use in Chinese older outpatients with cancer with multimorbidity in Chengdu based on the 2019 Beers Criteria. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using electronic medical data from nine tertiary hospitals in Chengdu from January 2018 to December 2018. The 2019 AGS Beers Criteria were used to evaluate th

Associations Between Potentially Inappropriate Medications and Adverse Health Outcomes in the Elderly: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Background: Adverse drug outcomes in the elderly have led to the development of lists of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs), such as the Beers criteria, and these PIMs have been studied widely; however, it is still unclear whether PIM use is predictive of adverse outcomes in older people. Objective: To qualitatively examine the associations between exposure to PIMs from the general Beers criteria and the Screening Tool of Older Persons' Prescriptions list and adverse outcomes, such as adverse drug reactions (ADRs)/adverse drug events (ADEs), hospitalization, and mortality. Medication Safety Strategies for Geriatric Patients in the Emergency Department: A Narrative Review.

Population aging is reshaping emergency care. Older adults already account for 15%-25% of U.S. emergency department (ED) visits and, compared with younger patients, present with greater numbers of comorbidities, higher resource utilization, longer stays, and markedly higher admission rates (35%-45%), return visits, and mortality. Medication exposure is a central driver of risk with an estimated ~10% of older-adult ED visits being medication-related. We conducted a narrative review of the literature surrounding medication safety for geriatric patients presenting to the ED and strategies that ca
