Characterization of H9N2 Avian Influenza Viruses Isolated from Poultry Products in a Mouse Model.

Low pathogenic H9N2 avian influenza viruses have spread in wild birds and poultry worldwide. Recently, the number of human cases of H9N2 virus infection has increased in China and other countries, heightening pandemic concerns. In Japan, H9N2 viruses are not yet enzootic; however, avian influenza viruses, including H5N1, H7N9, H5N6, and H9N2, have been repeatedly detected in raw poultry meat carried by international flight passengers from Asian countries to Japan. Although H9N2 virus-contaminated poultry products intercepted by the animal quarantine service at the Japan border have been charac

Residues of tetracycline compounds in poultry products in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia.

Chicken muscle, liver and egg samples were collected from 33 broiler and 5 layer farms in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia over a period of two years starting from January 1996. Antibiotic-residue positive samples were identified in the products of 23 (69.7%) broiler and 3 (60%) layer poultry farms. 87% and 100.0% of the antibiotic-residue positive broiler farms were positive for at least one tetracycline compound in raw muscle and liver respectively, while 73.9% and 95.5% were positive for 2 or more tetracyclines in these two tissues, respectively. Furthermore, 82.6% and 95.5% of the anti

Assessment of Meat and Poultry Product Recalls Due to Salmonella Contamination: Product Recovery and Illness Prevention.

Data from the recalls of meat and poultry products from 2000 through 2012 due to Salmonella contamination were used to assess the factors associated with the recovery of the recalled product and to develop quantitative models to estimate the number of illnesses prevented by recalls. The percentage of product recovered following a recall action was not dependent on establishment size, recall expansions, complexity of the distribution chain, type of distribution, amount of time between the production and recall dates, or number of pounds of product recalled. However, illness-related recalls were

International perspectives on impacts of reproductive technologies for world food production in Asia associated with poultry production.

Poultry meat and eggs are valuable sources of dietary protein in almost every country in the world. A number of breeding techniques, methods, and technology have been applied to obtain maximum production under different environmental and economic conditions. Indigenous and local breeds share 90 % of the total population of poultry in many developing countries in Asia. However, indigenous chickens are low in productivity. Many studies have found that crossbreeding of exotic with indigenous chickens resulted in birds that performed better, even superior to pure exotic chickens, with respect to b

Antimicrobial drug-resistant Escherichia coli from humans and poultry products, Minnesota and Wisconsin, 2002-2004.

The food supply, including poultry products, may transmit antimicrobial drug-resistant Escherichia coli to humans. To assess this hypothesis, 931 geographically and temporally matched E. coli isolates from human volunteers (hospital inpatients and healthy vegetarians) and commercial poultry products (conventionally raised or raised without antimicrobial drugs) were tested by PCR for phylogenetic group (A, B1, B2, D) and 60 virulence genes associated with extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli. Isolates resistant to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, quinolones, and extended spectrum cephalosporins (n

Functional role of the enteric nervous system in poultry intestinal health and production.

Like mammals, the avian intestinal epithelium is innervated by three neuronal pathways: vagal and sympathetic terminals, which originate from ganglia outside the gut wall and send information to the brain to modulate visceral sensitivity, appetite, and gut homeostasis; and the enteric nervous system (ENS), a complex network embedded within the gut wall that functions independently from the brain. The ENS coordinates essential GI physiological functions, such as intestinal motility, peristalsis, digestion, and absorption of nutrients and water. Recent studies conducted in mammals have shown tha

A review of the capacity for nutritional strategies to address environmental challenges in poultry production.

Poultry production faces increasing environmental challenges, in the United States and globally. Although the environmental impact of poultry production has been decreased, regulatory and social pressures mandate that further improvements be made to decrease the pollution potential even more. Concerns over air and water quality to date have been related primarily to nutrient issues, specifically N and P. Air emission concerns include N and sulfur emissions. More recently, states have addressed emissions of volatile organic compounds. Although no regulations have been developed that are targete

Sustainable antibiotic reduction in poultry production with Pulsatilla saponins and herbal supplementation.

The prolonged use of antibiotics in poultry production promotes the accumulation and spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARG), raising concerns for animal health and public safety. Developing effective antibiotic alternatives that support performance while limiting resistance risk is therefore a priority. Using broiler chickens as a model, this study evaluated the effects of Pulsatilla saponins, alone or combined with a compound herbal formulation, on growth performance, immune responses, cecal microbiota, and the intestinal resistome, with an antibiotic-treated group as reference. Growth a

The Current Status of the Alternative Use to Antibiotics in Poultry Production: An African Perspective.

Over the years the growth and health of food-producing animals have been enhanced by the use of antibiotics. These have helped reduce on-farm mortalities, lower incidences of diseases and more importantly improve productivity. Generally, the utilization of antibiotics in feed has been reevaluated since bacterial pathogens have established and shared a variety of antibiotic resistance mechanisms that can easily be spread within microbial communities. Multiple countries have introduced bans or severe restrictions on the non-therapeutic use of antibiotics. This has therefore warranted the urgent

An original system for the continuous monitoring of antimicrobial use in poultry production in France.

Data collection at the flock level on a continuous basis, for antimicrobial use surveillance purposes, provides a complex challenge. Using existing on-farm records, produced as part of the regulations for meat inspection, a sampling scheme was implemented to collect on a simple, representative and continuous basis, the forms providing history of antimicrobial consumption of poultry flocks slaughtered in Brittany. Relational database-stored information provided by the forms includes treatment purpose, antimicrobial drug administered, age at treatment and treatment duration. The aim of this stud

Mentha herbs and their bioactive molecules on biological functions, production performance, health, and product quality in poultry and livestock.

The use of in-feed antibiotics in livestock systems, particularly in poultry, has raised concerns about the increased prevalence of antibiotic-resistant human pathogens and the presence of antibiotic residues in animal products. Consequently, natural feed additives, including herbs and their bioactive compounds, are becoming preferred alternatives. Different species and varieties of mentha herbs contain varying essential oil components and concentrations, which influence their biological functions due to their antioxidant, antimicrobial, and immunomodulatory properties. Thus, mentha herbs, the

A systematic review and meta-analysis of the sources of Salmonella in poultry production (pre-harvest) and their relative contributions to the microbial risk of poultry meat.

Salmonella is a major foodborne pathogen associated with poultry and poultry products and a leading cause for human salmonellosis. Salmonella is known to transmit in poultry flocks both vertically and horizontally. However, there is a lack of knowledge on relative contribution of the factors on Salmonella prevalence in poultry live production system including hatchery, feed, water, environment-interior, and -exterior. Therefore, a systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to quantify the potential sources of Salmonella during preharvest and their relative contributions to the microbial

Isolation and molecular characterization of antibiotic-resistant lactic acid bacteria from poultry and swine meat products.

The transfer via the food chain from animals to humans of microbes that are resistant to antimicrobial agents is of increasing concern. To determine the contributions of nonpathogenic microflora to the occurrence and spread of antibiotic resistance (AR) genes in the food chain, 123 lactic acid bacteria were isolated from 29 samples of raw and processed pork and chicken meat products that had previously tested positive for one or more AR genes that encode clinically relevant ARs: tet(M), tet(O), tet(K), erm(A), erm(B), erm(C), aac (6')-Ie aph (2")-Ia, mecA, and blaZ. All of the isolates were in
