Practical guidelines on medical management of adults with moderate-to-severe inflammatory bowel disease.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic, relapsing inflammatory disorder that predominantly includes Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). IBD has emerged as a significant healthcare challenge in Saudi Arabia, with a more than fivefold increase in annual incidence over the past 2 decades. These guidelines promote high-quality, evidence-based care for adult patients with moderate-to-severe CD and UC in Saudi Arabia. These guidelines were developed using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation approach. A multidisciplinary panel of 16 experts cre

Enhancing drug therapy in ostomy patients: Best practice recommendations for medication management.

BACKGROUND: Ostomy surgery is a common procedure that poses various challenges for patients and healthcare professionals. There are numerous guidelines addressing different ostomy-related problems (ORPs) and supporting an interdisciplinary approach for ostomy care, but evidence-based literature for optimizing drug therapy after ostomy surgery is lacking. AIM: To investigate and characterize typical ORPs in relation to drug therapy and provide best practice recommendations from a pharmaceutical point of view. METHODS: Patients with an ileo- or colostomy were consecutively enrolled in a prospe

Reported best practices for effective risk management of medical devices: a scoping review.

Risk management (RM) is an essential element for developing safe technologies and frequently a requirement by the regulators. The practice of RM spans from pre-to-post market stages, starting from product development and continuing after product launch. Technological advancements and shifting demands in healthcare led to rapid growth of new technologies such as AI, robotics and point of care diagnostics, presenting many unknowns to the RM process. This study aims to review best practices in medical device RM, highlight gaps and ambiguities in knowledge and identify priorities for future resear

Comprehensive medication management (CMM): Application of a new pharmaceutical practice in onco-hematology.

The integration of a large number of drugs, such as antineoplastic agents and cancer-related supportive care drugs, into the management of cancer patients exposes them to an increased number of drug-related problems (DRP). Clinical pharmacists contribute to drug management by actively intervening in detected DRP. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of the applying a clinical pharmacist-driven comprehensive medication management (CMM) service to onco-hematology patients. This prospective interventional study was carried out over six-month duration, specifically from November 06, 2022

Knowledge and Practice of Dentists Managing Patients on Antithrombotic Medications: A Cross-Sectional Survey.

OBJECTIVES: In this article, we explored the level of knowledge and practice of licensed dentists in the United Arab Emirates regarding managing patients on antithrombotic medications. Moreover, to assess the need for educational intervention in this area is one of the objectives. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 502 dentists answered 22 close-ended questionnaires. The sample size was determined based on the registry of the Ministry of Health. RESULTS: Only 5.6 and 5.9% showed satisfactory overall awareness about aspirin and plavix, respectively, as drugs may hamper hemostasis. A substantia

AGA Clinical Practice Update on Management of Medically Refractory Gastroparesis: Expert Review.

DESCRIPTION: Delayed gastric emptying on objective testing defines gastroparesis, but symptoms overlap with functional dyspepsia and do not correlate well with gastric emptying delay. This review outlines a strategy for defining, diagnosing, and managing refractory gastroparesis. METHODS: The Best Practice Advice statements presented here were developed from review of existing literature combined with expert opinion to provide practical advice. Because this was not a systematic review, formal rating of the quality of evidence or strength of recommendations was not performed. BEST PRACTICE ADV

Practical Recommendations for the Diagnosis and Medical Management of Stable Angina: An Expert Panel Consensus.

Stable angina affects a significant number of coronary artery disease patients, impairing their quality of life and worsening their prognosis. It manifests even despite a history of revascularization and is often poorly controlled with drug therapy. Comorbid conditions are frequently encountered in coronary artery disease patients, affecting their prognosis and rendering the diagnosis and management of angina more challenging. In this article, derived by an expert panel meeting, we attempt a practical approach to stable angina, focusing on symptomatic patients subjected to previous coronary re

[Direct oral anticoagulant management for elective surgery : key points in the context of city medical practice].

Practices regarding the interruption, substitution, and restart of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) during the perioperative period have constantly evolved since the commercialization of those medications. This may lead to uncertainties regarding their adequate management among practitioners, particularly outside the hospital. We propose a review of recent reference publications and guidelines defining DOAC management during the pre- and postoperative period for elective surgery, with the goal of providing a pratical guide for practitioners outside the hospital, including general practitione

Quality management of potential chemotherapy-induced neutropenic complications: evaluation of practice in an academic medical center.

GOALS: Management of the risk of potential chemotherapy-induced neutropenic complications such as febrile neutropenia (FN) and severe neutropenia (SN) is a quality of care priority. How frequently does care at our institution conform to established guidelines? MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective chart review study included a random sample of 305 cancer patients receiving care at a single US academic medical center. Abstracted data included demographics, risk factors, and outcome variables (e.g., development of FN/SN, administration of myeloid growth factors). To evaluate quality of care

Consensus statement for the management of incidentally found brain white matter hyperintensities in general medical practice.

INTRODUCTION: There is a paradigm shift in our understanding of white matter hyperintensities (WMH) found on brain imaging. They were once thought to be a normal phenomenon of ageing and, therefore, warranted no further investigation. However, evidence now suggests these lesions are markers of poor brain and cardiovascular health, portending an increased risk of stroke, cognitive decline, depression and death. Nevertheless, no specific guidelines exist for the management of incidentally found WMH for general medical practitioners and other clinicians ordering brain magnetic resonance imaging s

Knowledge, attitudes and medical practice regarding hepatitis B prevention and management among healthcare workers in Northern Vietnam.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Vietnam's burden of liver cancer is largely due to its high prevalence of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. This study aimed to examine healthcare workers' (HCWs) knowledge, attitude and practices regarding HBV prevention and management. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey among health care workers working at primary and tertiary facilities in two Northern provinces in Vietnam in 2017. A standardized questionnaire was administered to randomly selected HCWs. Multivariate regression was used to identify predictors of the HBV knowledge score. RESULTS: Among the 314 pa

Self-reported problems in medication self-management in older polymedicated patients in general practice.

BACKGROUND: Polypharmacy is common in the older population and is recognized as a geriatric syndrome. The self-administration of medication is complex and requires cognitive and physical capacities that decrease with age. To avoid medication errors or harm, medication management capacity needs to be thoroughly assessed in routine clinical care. Here, we report on measuring self-reported medication management capacity in older polymedicated patients in primary care in an exploratory study using a questionnaire developed in the "Ability to Self-administer Medication in Non-demented In-hospital P
