BACKGROUND: Dentists prescribe approximately 10% of outpatient antibiotics, but little is known about dentists' antibiotic prescribing patterns. The authors conducted a study to characterize prescribing by dentists according to antibiotic agent and category, patient demographic characteristics, and geographic region in the United States.
METHODS: The authors identified oral antibiotic prescriptions dispensed during 2013 in the Xponent (QuintilesIMS) database. The authors used the total number of prescriptions and county-level census population denominators to calculate prescribing rates. In a

In January 2021, the guideline 'Periodontal screening, diagnosis, and treatment in general practice' was introduced as a successor to the so-called paro protocol. Simultaneously, the Dutch Periodontal Screening Index was replaced by the Periodic Periodontal Screening. The experiences of general dental practitioners and dental hygienists with the new guideline were evaluated in the autumn of 2022. Random groups of 1,000 general dental practitioners and 400 dental hygienists were invited to answer an online questionnaire on this topic: 125 (12.5%) general dental practitioners and 102 (25.5%) den

This study aimed to investigate the possible factors affecting dentists' behavior relating to performing oral cancer examinations as part of routine clinical examination. A total of 95 direct clinical observation sessions-utilizing an instrument consisting of 19 evidence-based observational criteria for oral cancer examinations-were observed by four calibrated dentists. Thirty-two final-year students, 32 interns, and 31 faculty members of Jazan Dental School were examined between April 9 and May 4, 2017. A descriptive analysis was conducted to investigate the frequencies/percentages of the per

BACKGROUND: Drug overdose has become a leading cause of accidental death in the United States. Between 2000 and 2015, the rate of deaths from drug overdoses increased 137%, including a 200% increase in the rate of overdose deaths involving opioids (including opioid pain relievers and heroin). Unnecessary opioid prescribing is one of the factors driving this epidemic.
OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this paper is to share lessons learned while conducting a randomized trial to de-implement opioids for post-extraction pain management utilizing clinical decision support (CDS) with and withou
