A Structured Curriculum for Interprofessional Training of Emergency Medicine Interns.

Interprofessional education (IPE) has been shown to improve health outcomes and patient satisfaction. IPE is now represented in the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education's emergency medicine (EM) milestones given the team-based nature of EM. The Highland Allied Health Rotation Program (H-AHRP) was developed by residents to enhance and standardize IPE for EM residents in a single hospital setting. H-AHRP was incorporated into the orientation month for interns starting in the summer of 2016. EM interns were paired with emergency department preceptors in registered nursing (RN), re

[Lessons from Field Studies].

During my academic career for more than 40 years, I was involved in 18 epidemiological field studies, partially or fully. Among these field studies, four (1. Medical services in remote rural areas in Okinawa, 2. Yusho episode, 3. JICA Onchocerciasis Control Project in Guatemala, and 4. Miyako cohort study in Fukuoka) are introduced in this paper, including the latest situation after the presentation. Through these field works experienced by the author, the following lessons were gained. 1. Strong human reliance between researchers and the targeted population is essential in carrying out epidem

Decentralized medical education in rural communities: the circuit rider connection.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Successful community-based medical education requires an ongoing relationship among the school, medical students, and community preceptors. The use of medical school faculty as "circuit riders" helps to develop and maintain these relationships. We studied the benefits, challenges, and barriers as seen by faculty participating in circuit riding activities at the University of New Mexico. METHODS: All 43 faculty circuit riders from the most recent academic year were asked to complete an anonymous electronic survey. Ranked responses and free text comments were included

Activities by the schools to improve the distribution of dentists: an AADS report.

It appears that most dental schools have not yet become actively involved in efforts to solve maldistribution problems. However, there seems to be increasing interest in the potential benefits of extramural experience programs. Coordination of efforts by the schools, the state dental associations, and the state boards of dental examiners is very limited, but is clearly needed. Admissions committees seem to be trying to take into account the needs of rural areas and the inner city as well. Finally, the results of the survey point up the need for further study of these problems and of the value

The value of mentoring: a strategic approach to retention and recruitment.

The issues of recruitment, training, and retention of experienced nursing staff remains an ongoing business strategy of nursing service in many health care facilities. The implementation of a structured mentoring program recognizes the need to develop and maintain relationships between the new and the experienced nurses. The terms of mentor and mentee are defined within a structured orientation program, highlighting specific roles and responsibilities of each. The use of other staff as preceptors and resources is discussed as a mechanism to enhance diversity in skill and knowledge development.

Stressed and Short: Creating a Balanced and Innovative Preceptor Model in a Medical Intensive Care Unit.

An innovative preceptor model (IPM) was developed to transition newly graduate nurses (NGNs) to practice. The imbalanced number of experienced nurses to NGNs during COVID-19 demonstrated a need for an "out-of-the-box" solution, one preceptor to two nurse residents, in the medical intensive care unit. The IPM was evaluated through surveys, postclinical immersion debriefs, and feedback sessions with the preceptors and NGNs. The IPM helped preceptors guide NGNs in their journey to independent practice.

Burnout in new graduate nurses: a concept analysis.

OBJECTIVES: New graduate nurses (NGNs) experience higher rates of burnout compared to experienced nurses, and burnout is linked to intention to leave the profession. Despite its importance, the concept of burnout among NGNs is not well understood. As such, we aimed to explore and clarify the concept of burnout among NGNs by identifying its conceptual attributes, antecedents, and consequences. METHODS: Walker and Avant's concept analysis method was used. CINAHL, Scopus, and PubMed were searched for literature between 2015 and 2024 pertaining to burnout among NGNs; 16 articles were included. R

Structure, processes, and initial outcomes of The Ottawa Hospital Multi-Specialist Limb-Preservation Clinic and Programme: A unique-in-Canada quality improvement initiative.

In 2017, The Ottawa Hospital initiated a unique-in-Canada quality improvement initiative by opening a novel, multi-specialist limb-preservation clinic. We sought to describe the structure, processes, and initial outcomes of the clinic and evaluate whether it is achieving its mandate of providing high-quality wound clinical care, education, and research. We conducted a descriptive prospective cohort study alongside a nested study of 162 clinic patients requiring serial assessments. There have been 1623 visits, mostly (72.2%) from outpatients. During 17.8% of visits, patients were evaluated by >

Latent profiles of teaching self-efficacy and clinical teaching behaviors among clinical nurse preceptors and factors associated with profile membership: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Clinical nurse preceptors play a central role in supporting nursing students and newly employed nurses during clinical practice. Teaching self-efficacy may be related to preceptors' clinical teaching behaviors, yet little is known about how these psychological beliefs and observable behaviors co-occur within level-based profiles. This study aimed to identify latent profiles of teaching self-efficacy and clinical teaching behaviors among clinical nurse preceptors and examine factors associated with profile membership. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted from February to

Strategies for Managing Pharmacy Experiential Education During COVID-19.

In recent months, the coronavirus pandemic has significantly affected almost every industry in the United States, including health care and higher education. Faculty and students at colleges and schools of pharmacy nationwide have needed to quickly adapt as the delivery of curricula has shifted to primarily online format. Additionally, experiential rotations have been significantly affected as practice settings such as hospitals and outpatient clinics have limited students' interactions with patients or stopped allowing students on-site altogether. Our commentary will explore strategies that h
