Acquisition of Lateralized Predation Behavior Associated with Development of Mouth Asymmetry in a Lake Tanganyika Scale-Eating Cichlid Fish.

The scale-eating cichlid Perissodus microlepis with asymmetric mouth is an attractive model of behavioral laterality: each adult tears off scales from prey fishes' left or right flanks according to the direction in which its mouth is skewed. To investigate the development of behavioral laterality and mouth asymmetry, we analyzed stomach contents and lower jaw-bone asymmetry of various-sized P. microlepis (22 ≤ SL<115 mm) sampled in Lake Tanganyika. The shapes of the pored scales found in each specimen's stomach indicated its attack side preference. Early-juvenile specimens (SL<45 mm) feeding m

Comparative growth and development of spiders reared on live and dead prey.

Scavenging (feeding on dead prey) has been demonstrated across a number of spider families, yet the implications of feeding on dead prey for the growth and development of individuals and population is unknown. In this study we compare the growth, development, and predatory activity of two species of spiders that were fed on live and dead prey. Pardosa astrigera (Lycosidae) and Hylyphantes graminicola (Lyniphiidae) were fed live or dead fruit flies, Drosophila melanogaster. The survival of P. astrigera and H. graminicola was not affected by prey type. The duration of late instars of P. astriger

Effects of size, motility and paralysation time of prey on the quantity of venom injected by the hunting spider Cupiennius salei.

Previous experimental studies have shown that neotropical wandering spiders (Cupiennius salei) inject more venom when attacking larger crickets. It has been postulated that this is a consequence of predator-prey interactions during envenomation, which increase in intensity with the size of a given prey species. The present study was designed to test this hypothesis using anaesthetized crickets of different sizes that were moved artificially. Cupiennius salei was found (1) to inject more venom the greater the intensity of the struggling movement of the crickets (prey size kept constant); (2) to

Many-eyes and sentinels in selfish and cooperative groups.

Collective vigilance describes how animals in groups benefit from the predator detection efforts of others. Empirical observations typically find either a many-eyes strategy with all (or many) group members maintaining a low level of individual vigilance, or a sentinel strategy with one (or a few) individuals maintaining a high level of individual vigilance while others do not. With an analytical treatment that makes minimal assumptions, we show that these two strategies are alternative solutions to the same adaptive problem of balancing the costs of predation and vigilance. Which strategy is

The mother as hunter: significant reduction in foraging costs through enhancements of predation in maternal rats.

In previous laboratory investigations, we have identified enhanced cognition and reduced stress in parous rats, which are likely adaptations in mothers needing to efficiently exploit resources to maintain, protect and provision their immature offspring. Here, in a series of seven behavioral tests on rats, we examined a natural interface between cognition and resource gathering: predation. Experiment 1 compared predatory behavior (toward crickets) in age-matched nulliparous mothers (NULLs) and postpartum lactating mothers (LACTs), revealing a highly significant enhancement of predation in LACT

Freezing or death feigning? Beetles selected for long death feigning showed different tactics against different predators.

Prey evolve antipredator strategies against multiple enemies in nature. We examined how a prey species adopts different predation avoidance tactics against pursuit or sit-and-wait predators. As prey, we used three strains of Tribolium beetles artificially selected for short (short strain) or long (long strain) duration of death feigning, and a stock culture (base population). Death feigning is known to be effective for evading a jumping spider in the case of the long strains, while the present study showed that the long-strain beetles used freezing against a sit-and-wait type predator, Amphibo

Effects of acute exposure to the insecticide fipronil on the predator Podisus nigrispinus: Histopathological insight and pesticide toxicity.

Predatory bugs such as Podisus nigrispinus Dallas play an important role in biological pest control in agricultural and forestry crops. However, the use of insecticides can negatively impact this predator, reducing its population and compromising the sustainability of agroecosystems. Fipronil, a commonly used agricultural insecticide, has been shown to damage the midgut epithelial cells of the predatory bug, warranting further investigation. This study evaluated the survival, behavior, and histological changes in the midgut of P. nigrispinus following exposure to insecticide fipronil. The inse

Flamingos use their L-shaped beak and morphing feet to induce vortical traps for prey capture.

Flamingos feature one of the most sophisticated filter-feeding systems among birds, characterized by upside-down feeding, comb-like lamellae, and a piston-like tongue. However, the hydrodynamic functions of their L-shaped chattering beak, S-curved neck, and distinct behaviors such as stomping and feeding against the flow remain a mystery. Combining live flamingo experiments with live brine shrimp and passive particles, bioinspired physical models, and 3D CFD simulations, we show that flamingos generate self-induced vortical traps using their heads, beaks, and feet to capture agile planktonic p

Functional morphology of the pharyngeal teeth of the ocean sunfish, Mola mola.

Many fish use a set of pharyngeal jaws in their throat to aid in prey capture and processing, particularly of large or complex prey. In this study-combining dissection, CT scanning, histology, and performance testing-we demonstrate a novel use of pharyngeal teeth in the ocean sunfish (Mola mola), a species for which pharyngeal jaw anatomy had not been described. We show that sunfish possesses only dorsal pharyngeal jaws where, in contrast to their beaklike oral teeth, teeth are recurved spikes, arranged in three loosely connected rows. Fang-like pharyngeal teeth were tightly socketed in the sk

Deconstructing Hunting Behavior Reveals a Tightly Coupled Stimulus-Response Loop.

Animal behavior often forms sequences, built from simple stereotyped actions and shaped by environmental cues. A comprehensive characterization of the interplay between an animal's movements and its environment is necessary to understand the sensorimotor transformations performed by the brain. Here, we use unsupervised methods to study behavioral sequences in zebrafish larvae. We generate a map of swim bouts, revealing that fish modulate their tail movements along a continuum. During prey capture, larvae produce stereotyped sequences using a subset of bouts from a broader behavioral repertoire

Resource abundance influences the fitness cost of antipredator responses.

Predation risk induces antipredator responses in prey which, if prolonged, can negatively affect their fitness. However, risk effects on prey traits and fitness are often modulated by other ecological factors, such as food resources. While few studies explicitly link antipredator responses with prey fitness, even fewer examine the influence of food resources on the strength and direction of nonconsumptive effects (NCEs). To understand the mechanistic underpinnings of NCEs and how resource abundance modulates them, we measured multiple antipredator responses and fitness in wild Indian spiny-tai

Meniscus Profiling of Fly Fishing Lures by Optical Diffraction.

Fly fishing is a method of fishing using hand-tied lures called "flies" that mimic local prey like insects or crayfish. In this study, we focus on fly fishing in calm waters using "dry" flies, which are absent of any gel coating, and float on the water surface by virtue of their construction of low-density materials. Despite an 1800-year history of fly fishing, little is known how these flies look like to fish. We introduce an optical method using the diffraction of transmitted underwater riverbed patterns to quantify the meniscus shape around floating objects. We use this method to describe t

The immune response of Phytoseiulus persimilis (Acari: Phytoseiidae) to the bacterial pathogen Acaricomes phytoseiuli.

The natural immune system of arthropods is an important defense against pathogen infection. Predatory mites, as a highly commercialized group of natural enemies, suffer the threat of pathogen infection during mass rearing processes. However, there is a lack of research on the immune mechanisms of predatory mites in response to pathogen infection. To explore whether the Phytoseiulus persimilis possesses a natural immune response to pathogen, we selected the typical Gram-positive bacterium Acaricomes phytoseiuli to examine the pathogenic impact on P. persimilis fitness and the potential immune-r

Marked differences in foraging area use and susceptibility to predation between two closely-related tropical seabirds.

Ecological theory predicts that closely-related species must occupy different niches to coexist. How marine top predators achieve this during breeding, when they often gather in large multi-species colonies and are constrained to central-place foraging, has been mostly studied in productive temperate and polar oceans with abundant resources, but less so in poorer, tropical waters. Here, we track the foraging movements of two closely-related sympatric seabirds-the white-tailed and red-tailed tropicbirds Phaethon lepturus and P. rubricauda-breeding on Aldabra Atoll, Seychelles, to investigate po

A new bilaterally injured trilobite presents insight into attack patterns of Cambrian predators.

Durophagous predation in the Cambrian is typically recorded as malformed shells and trilobites, with rarer evidence in the form of coprolites and shelly gut contents. Reporting novel evidence for shell-crushing further expands the understanding of where and when in the Cambrian durophagy was present. To expand the current documentation and present new records of malformed trilobites from the Cambrian of China, we present an injured Redlichia (Pteroredlichia) chinensis from the lower Cambrian Balang Formation, western Hunan, South China. The specimen has two distinct injuries along the thorax.

The role of the ventrolateral caudoputamen in predatory hunting.

The ventrolateral caudoputamen (VLCP) is well known to participate in the control of orofacial movements and forepaw usage accompanying feeding behavior. Previous studies from our laboratory have shown that insect hunting is associated with a distinct Fos up-regulation in the VLCP at intermediate rostro-caudal levels. Moreover, using the reversible blockade with lidocaine, we have previously suggested that the VLCP implements the stereotyped actions seen during prey capture and handling, and may influence the motivational drive to start attacking the roaches, as well. However, considering that

Testing the Impact of Prey Presentation Method on the Feeding Kinematics of Terrestrial and Aquatic Ambystomatidae.

In animal behavior, standardizing experimental protocols ensures a rigorous interpretation of the results. However, when working with multisource data, homogeneous standardization is often difficult to attain. This is the case for many studies on feeding kinematics where experimental protocols are carried out using similar but not identical methods. In particular, the impact of the way in which prey is presented remains poorly tested and understood. The aim of this study is to assess whether prey position and the way prey is presented have an impact on the kinematics of prey capture. To do so,

Taphonomic signatures of early scavenging by black and turkey vultures.

Scavenging is critical for nutrient cycling and maintenance of healthy ecosystems. While there is substantial research into the identification of taphonomic signatures from facultative mammalian scavengers, early stage scavenging signatures by vultures remain unknown. Further, some vulture species are opportunistic predators, highlighting the need to define signatures observed in the course of normal scavenging behavior. We placed stillborn neonatal calves in an unoccupied pasture and used motion-trigger camera traps to quantify scavenging effort, then conducted necropsies to evaluate the effe

Linking hunting weaponry to attack strategies in sailfish and striped marlin.

Linking morphological differences in foraging adaptations to prey choice and feeding strategies has provided major evolutionary insights across taxa. Here, we combine behavioural and morphological approaches to explore and compare the role of the rostrum (bill) and micro-teeth in the feeding behaviour of sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) and striped marlin (Kajikia audax) when attacking schooling sardine prey. Behavioural results from high-speed videos showed that sailfish and striped marlin both regularly made rostrum contact with prey but displayed distinct strategies. Marlin used high-spee

Armoured spiderman: morphological and behavioural adaptations of a specialised araneophagous predator (Araneae: Palpimanidae).

In a predator-prey system where both intervenients come from the same taxon, one can expect a strong selection on behavioural and morphological traits involved in prey capture. For example, in specialised snake-eating snakes, the predator is unaffetced by the venom of the prey. We predicted that similar adaptations should have evolved in spider-eating (araneophagous) spiders. We investigated potential and actual prey of two Palpimanus spiders (P. gibbulus, P. orientalis) to support the prediction that these are araneophagous predators. Specific behavioural adaptations were investigated using a
