BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Prediabetes is defined as a state of impaired glucose metabolism with hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels that precede those of a diabetic state. There is increasing evidence that suggests that hyperglycemic derangement in prediabetes leads to microvascular and macrovascular complications even before progression to overt diabetes mellitus. We aim to identify the association of prediabetes with acute cardiovascular events.
METHODS: We utilized the National inpatient sample 2018-2020 to identify adult hospitalizations with prediabetes after excluding all hospitalizations with dia

Cystic fibrosis-related diabetes (CFRD) is a common extrapulmonary manifestation of cystic fibrosis (CF) affecting up to 50% of adults. Cystic fibrosis-related diabetes is associated with poorer lung function, lower nutrition, and increased mortality. Abnormal blood glucoses, especially post-prandial hyperglycemia, can precede a diagnosis of CFRD by many years, and even the prediabetic state has been associated with poorer health outcomes in people with CF (pwCF). With the advent of cystic fibrosis transconductance regulator (CFTR) modulator therapies, the clinical landscape of CF is changing.

AIMS: Uremia is a prediabetic state, but abnormal glucose metabolism and relative risk factors in non-diabetic chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients are not studied extensively. This study aimed to evaluate prediabetes and contributing factors in patients with CKD.
METHODS: We studied the frequency of prediabetes (defined as fasting plasma glucose 100-125 mg/dl and 2-h plasma glucose 140-199 mg/dl) and contributing risk factors in 91 (34 women and 57 men) non-diabetic CKD (GFR < 60) patients who were referred to Sina Hospital between November 2010 and November 2011. To determine whether abnormalities in glucagon secretion might precede the onset of hyperglycemia in diabetes mellitus, 32 prediabetic Pima (American) Indians, 27 normal Pima Indians and 34 normal Caucasians received an infusion of arginine monochloride (5 mg/kg/min for 40 minutes) with measurement of glucose, insulin, and glucagon. [Prediabetes is the period between conception and the development of diabetes. In most studies the term is used to characterize patients who on genetic grounds are believed to be at high risk of developing the disease, including the normoglycemic monozygotic co-twi

Recent evidence has shown that 346million people in the world have diabetes mellitus (DM); this number will increase to 439million by 2030. In addition, current data indicate an increase in DM cases in the population between 40 and 59years of age. Diabetes is associated with the development of micro- and macro-vascular complications, derived from chronic hyperglycemia on the endothelium. Some reports demonstrate that people in a prediabetic state have a major risk of developing early endothelial dysfunction (ED). Today, it is accepted that individuals considered as prediabetic patients are in

BACKGROUND: The association of plasma metals on the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in adults with prediabetes remains poorly investigated. To assess the association between plasma metal exposure and the risk of CVD in prediabetic adults in the United States using five plasma metals.
METHODS: Five cycles of data (2011-2012, 2013-2014, 2015-2016, and 2017-2018) from the NHANES were adopted in this study. The plasma metals were measured in 1088 participants with prediabetes. We utilized multivariate logistic regression, WQS, and BKMR models to evaluate the associations between the five pl

In the fasting state, totally gastrectomized rats had higher glycemia, higher glucagonemia and lower insulinemia than normal rats. However, they are not prediabetic or diabetic, because after a glucose tolerance test the response of glucagon secretion, though accentuated at the beginning, decreased sharply when insulin secretion was stimulated. The evolution of glucagonemia and insulinemia indicated that the positive-negative feedback of the couple alpha-beta cells of islets of Langerhans still regulated glucose homeostasis. Hypoglycemia seen after the glucose test in operated rats disappeared

Background: The onset of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is often preceded by prediabetes, a reversible state of insulin resistance and impaired glucose regulation driven by the chronic consumption of a high-calorie diet and sedentary lifestyle. Prediabetes is characterised by impaired glucose tolerance and elevated glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c). Although metformin improves insulin sensitivity, adherence limitations to lifestyle interventions highlight the need for alternative drugs that can be effective even without dietary intervention. In our laboratory, we synthesised a novel ruthenium comp

BACKGROUND: Prediabetes is defined as a hyperglycemic state between normal glucose metabolism and diabetes mellitus. It is also recognized as a predisposing factor for cardiovascular disease. Apolipoprotein is a constituent of lipoproteins, and its ratio levels (ApoB/ApoA1 ratio) are considered an independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the apolipoprotein ratio (ApoB/ApoA1 ratio) and lipoprotein ratio (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C/HDL-C) ratio) in prediabetes in relation to glycemic levels and establis

People with elevated, non-diabetic, levels of blood glucose are at risk of progressing to clinical type 2 diabetes and are commonly termed 'prediabetic'. The term prediabetes usually refers to high-normal fasting plasma glucose (impaired fasting glucose) and/or plasma glucose 2 h following a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (impaired glucose tolerance). Current US guidelines consider high-normal HbA1c to also represent a prediabetic state. Individuals with prediabetic levels of dysglycaemia are already at elevated risk of damage to the microvasculature and macrovasculature, resembling the long

Hyperuricemia has been associated with hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and metabolic syndrome. We studied the association between hyperuricemia and glycemic status in a nonrandomized sample of primary care patients. This was a cross-sectional study of adults ≥ 20 years old who were members of a community-based health care program. Hyperuricemia was defined as a value >7.0 mg/dL for men and >6.0 mg/dL for women. The sample comprised 720 participants including controls (n=257) and patients who were hypertensive and euglycemic (n=118), prediabetic (n=222), or diabetic (n=123). The mean age was 4

UNLABELLED: Prediabetes is an umbrella term which refers to a collection of blood parameters related to glucose regulation exceeding their normal threshold, but not meeting the criteria for overt diabetes. Its prevalence is rising worldwide, largely driven by overweight/obesity, diet, lack of exercise and familiarity.
OBJECTIVES: To provide a state-of-the-art overview of epidemiology, pathophysiology, cardiovascular (CV) implications, and emerging therapeutic strategies in prediabetes.
METHODS: Narrative review with structured discussion of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and meta-analys

We characterized the state-to-state transitions in postpartum hemoglobin A1c levels after gestational diabetes, including remaining in a state of normoglycemia or transitions between prediabetes or diabetes states of varying severity. We used data from the APPLE Cohort, a postpartum population-based cohort of individuals with gestational diabetes between 2009 and 2011, and linked A1c data with up to 9 years of follow-up (n = 34 171). We examined maternal sociodemographic and perinatal characteristics as predictors of transitions in A1c progression using Markov multistate models. In the first y

This study aimed to investigate the mechanisms known to regulate glucose homeostasis in human skeletal muscle of healthy and prediabetic subjects exercising in normobaric hypoxia. Seventeen healthy (H; 28.8 ± 2.4 yr; maximal oxygen consumption (V̇O2max): 45.1 ± 1.8 mL·kg-1·min-1) and 15 prediabetic (P; 44.6 ± 3.9 yr; V̇O2max: 30.8 ± 2.5 mL·kg-1·min-1) men were randomly assigned to two groups performing an acute exercise bout (heart rate corresponding to 55% V̇O2max) either in normoxic (NE) or in hypoxic (HE; fraction of inspired oxygen [Formula: see text] 14.0%) conditions. Prediabetes is a highly prevalent stage of early metabolic dysfunction that poses a high risk for cardiovascular and cognitive impairment without a clear pathological mechanism. Here, we used a non-obese prediabetic rat model previously developed in our laboratory to examine this mechanism. These rats were subjected to a mild metabolic challenge leading to hyperinsulinemia without hyperglycemia or obesity. This was associated with impaired hippocampal-dependent cognitive functions together with an augmented cerebrovascular myogenic tone. Consequently, hippocampal expression of hypoxia-inducibl

BACKGROUND: Prediabetes represents a transitional state in glucose metabolism with an increasing global and national prevalence, particularly in India. Recent evidence suggests that both thyroid dysfunction and chronic low-grade inflammation may play pivotal roles in the progression of prediabetes to overt Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Thyroid hormones regulate glucose metabolism, while inflammatory markers such as white blood cell (WBC) count and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) are indicators of systemic inflammation often elevated in metabolic disorders.
OBJECTIVES: This stu

Purpose The purpose of the study was to determine the extent to which arthritis-related limitations are salient in predicting less than the recommended amount of time for adults with prediabetes to spend on moderate or vigorous physical activity. Methods Data from the 2011-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in the United States were used to identify the predictors of insufficient physical activity in a large sample of adults with prediabetes 20 years of age and older (n = 2536). Results When extrapolated to more than 45 million adults in the United States at least 2

The abnormalities of gastrointestinal (GI) slow waves play key roles in the pathophysiology of diabetic gastroparesis, which is highly prevalent in type 2 diabetes (T2D). Although relatively well-investigated in diabetic enteric neuropathy, abnormalities and progressive impairments of gastric slow waves (GSWs) and duodenal slow waves (DSWs) are underinvestigated during the progression of T2D. The aim of this study was to explore alterations in GSW and DSW during the development of diabetes induced by high-fat diet (HFD) followed by a low dose of streptozotocin (STZ). Weekly recordings of slow
