Vulvar syringoma exacerbated during pregnancy.

Although syringoma of the eyelids and the cheeks are well known and defined, vulvar syringoma is a rare clinical variant of this benign eccrine tumor. A case of syringoma of the vulva exacerbated during pregnancies with regression in the periods in between is presented. Histopathological examination showed typical features of syringomas. Only 20 patients with vulvar syringoma have been previously reported in the literature.

Myomas and pregnancy.

At this time, the growth of uterine myomas during pregnancy cannot be predicted. Major complications of pregnancy appear to be related to whether the placenta and the myoma are in contact. The location and number of myomas, especially in the lower uterine segment, increases the likelihood of cesarean birth and malpresentation. Frequent ultrasound evaluations to monitor fetal growth and presentation and the size of the myoma should be considered in pregnant women with uterine myomas. Surgical resection of myomas should be reserved for those pregnant women with symptomatic pedunculated myomas wi

Breast cancer during pregnancy.

Breast cancer during pregnancy involves a host of psychosocial, ethical, religious, and legal considerations, as well as medical multidisciplinary decisions. Treatment modalities. Breast or chest wall radiation therapy should be avoided because the fetal dose, regardless of the trimester, can cause permanent complications. In the second and third trimester, chemotherapy is associated with intrauterine growth retardation and prematurity in approximately half of the infants; the risk of birth defects is a concern during the first several weeks. Typical anesthetic agents readily reach the fetus b

Pheochromocytoma in pregnancy: a review of the Japanese literature.

We review the 35 cases with pheochromocytoma associated with pregnancy including our own 3 cases in the Japanese literature from 1958 to 1993. In a total of 35 cases, the overall maternal mortality rate was 11% and the fetal loss 22%. Recently, after 1981, the maternal mortality rate and the fetal loss were significantly reduced to one patient (6%). Although antepartum diagnosis of pheochromocytoma was made in only 32% of the patients, maternal mortality was reduced to zero and fetal loss to 18%. An initial diagnosis of toxemia of pregnancy was made in 17 patients (49%) and of pheochromocytoma

Pregnancy Associated Melanoma: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Challenges.

A rare clinical condition associated with numerous diagnostic and treatment challenges, pregnancy-associated melanoma (PAM), is defined as melanoma diagnosed either during pregnancy or within the first year postpartum. The physiological changes in pregnancy (hormonal changes and immune modulation), along with the normal changes in the pregnant woman's skin (skin color changes, etc.), may all hinder early detection of this disease and create concerns regarding the advancement of melanoma and the well-being of both the mother and her fetus. The purpose of this review article was to summarize the

Rapid expansion of a spinal anastomosing hemangioma during pregnancy with acute paralysis: A case report.

CONTEXT: Anastomosing hemangioma typically presents as an asymptomatic lesion in the genitourinary tract, but can cause abdominal pain and hematuria. Early identification and surgical removal are crucial to avoid poor outcomes. CASE REPORT: We report a case of acute paralysis due to rapid tumor enlargement during pregnancy. This case is unique as anastomosing hemangiomas rarely occur in the spinal region, and cases where they cause such severe symptoms have rarely been reported, particularly in pregnant women. CONCLUSION: This case highlights the critical need for early recognition and inter

Endometrial cancer and simultaneous pregnancy, an unusual combination. Case report.

Uterine cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women. Declining fertility, combined with increasing overweight and diabetes, might be some of the causes accountable for the rapid increase in the incidence of endometrial cancer (EC). Around 5% of EC are diagnosed in women aged under 40 years. We present a case of EC in a 36-year-old woman confirmed by hysteroscopy-directed biopsy, who became pregnant before receiving any primary treatment. She had no other significant medical or family history of interest. Image staging found a uterine-confined disease. The pregnancy had a normal course. Th

Gynecologic cancer in pregnancy.

Cancer complicates 1 in 1000 pregnancies. Multidisciplinary consensus comprised of Gynecologic Oncology, Pathology, Neonatology, Radiology, Anesthesiology, Maternal Fetal Medicine, and Social Work should be convened. Pregnancy provides an opportunity for cervical cancer screening, with deliberate delays in treatment permissible for early stage carcinoma. Vaginal delivery is contraindicated in the presence of gross lesion(s) and radical hysterectomy with lymphadenectomy at cesarean delivery is recommended. Women with locally advanced and metastatic/recurrent disease should commence treatment at

Laparoscopic surgery for presumed benign ovarian tumor during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: The surgical management of ovarian tumors in pregnancy is similar to that of non-pregnant women. The procedures include resection of the tumor (enucleation), removal of an ovary or ovaries (oophorectomy), or surgical excision of the fallopian tube and ovary (salpingo-oophorectomy). The procedure can be done by open surgery (laparotomy) or keyhole surgery (laparoscopy) technique. The benefits of laparoscopic surgery include shorter hospital stay, earlier return to normal activity, and reduced postoperative pain. However, conventional laparoscopic surgery techniques required the infu

Taxanes for breast cancer during pregnancy: a systematic review.

Landmark studies have established taxanes in the treatment of patients with breast cancer; however, recommendations regarding their administration during pregnancy are controversial. The present systematic review aims to synthesize all available data that stem exclusively from breast cancer case series to evaluate the efficacy and safety of taxanes during pregnancy. Overall, 16 studies (50 pregnancies) were eligible for the systematic review according to prisma guidelines. The mean age of patients with breast cancer at pregnancy was 34.6 years. The gestational age (GA) at chemotherapy administ

[Lung cancer in pregnancy: report of two cases and review of literature].

OBJECTIVE: to raise awareness about lung cancer in pregnancy. METHODS: the clinical presentations, diagnosis and treatment of 2 cases of lung cancer in pregnancy were reported, and related literatures were reviewed. RESULTS: The first case was a 31-year-old pregnant woman at 34(th)-week gestation, who presented with right sided pleural effusion on a Chest X-ray film. A boy was delivered by Cesarean section at 35 weeks of gestation. Biopsy of the right-supraclavicular lymph node was performed simultaneously, and histopathological examination showed metastatic large cell lung cancer. Her respi

[Giant chorioangioma of the placenta: report of a case].

Chorioangioma of the placenta is a benign vascular growth most frequently. Many small neoplasms are missed in routine examination of the placenta. The large tumors cause problems for the clinical outcome of the pregnancy or delivery or for the infant. We report a giant chorioangioma of the placenta of ten centimeters diagnosed in delivery by cesarean section in women with gestation third without complications. The benign vascular growth to fetal surface of the placenta. The histological variety was an angioblastic. In this case complication maternal or infant were not diagnosed.

[Effect of uterine fibromas on pregnancy].

The recent published journal reports concerning the influence of uterine myomas on pregnancy are reviewed. The prevalence of uterine myomas in pregnancy is 0.1-5%, and less than half of the cases can be diagnosed by clinical investigation alone. The previous belief that continuous growth of myomas occurs during pregnancy seems incorrect. Most myomas grow during the first trimester, whereafter only few continue to enlarge. The most often recognized complication during pregnancies with uterine myomas is abdominal pain. About ten percent will suffer from this. Treatment is with non-steroidal anti

Breast tumour of pregnancy ('lactating' adenoma).

Fourteen cases of a benign lesion of the breast, often referred to as 'lactating' adenoma, are described. They were all first noticed during pregnancy. The microscopic changes are similar to those seen in the normal pregnant breast but vary in degree and are out of phase with it. Any association with fibroadenoma or fibrocystic disease seems coincidental. 'Lactating' adenomas are also clearly distinguishable from tubular adenomas, which consist of masses of closely set tubules, like ductules of the normal resting breast, and are not related to pregnancy. Immunocytochemistry using antisera to b

Malignant degeneration of mature cystic teratomas.

Malignant transformation of benign cystic teratoma is rare and the most common malignancy is squamous cell carcinoma. The diagnosis is rarely made preoperatively and the prognosis is usually poor. We report 4 cases with dermoid cysts showing malignant transformation, 3 with squamous carcinoma and 1 with adenocarcinoma. The patients were within the reproductive age and underwent surgical intervention with intraoperative evaluation. Frozen section identified 2 cases with malignant transformation and staging laparotomy was performed at the initial laparotomy. One of the remaining underwent reoper
