BACKGROUND: beta-thalassaemia is a preventable disease. Iran has about 20,000 homozygote beta-thalassaemia patients and 3,750,000 carriers.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the 10-year results of the screening programme, which has been operating in Southern Iran since 1995.
METHODS: All couples wanting to marry were required to be checked for beta-thalassaemia by their red blood cell indices in order to receive a permit for marriage registration. Little is known about sexuality among Chinese in the U.S. There are reasons to believe that their sexual attitudes and behaviors would differ from those of Chinese in Asia as well as other groups in the U.S. This survey of ethnic Chinese college students in the U.S. examined the permissiveness of their attitudes toward premarital sex and their premarital sexual behavior with an eye toward their levels of acculturation. Premarital counseling is required for couples wishing to be married in China. The counseling primarily provides information about contraception. We evaluated adding premarital HIV/AIDS counseling and voluntary HIV testing to the standard counseling. The test was offered free to one group and at the standard cost to the other. At the most general level, I seek to model female adolescent sexual and contraceptive behavior in terms of the social context in which it occurs. Drawing on emerging theoretical literature pertaining to social exchange theory and changes in the social positions of women (and men) and also on existing substantive literature, I apply these notions to adolescent sexuality and contraceptive usage. This paper examines efforts by some churches in Ghana to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS. The analysis is based on focus group discussions with two groups of men and two groups of women, along with in-depth interviews with 13 pastors and marriage counsellors in the churches studied.
