The presence of a premenstrual tension syndrome (PMTS) should be considered during the clinical assessment of any women of childbearing age with intermittent or fluctuating psychological symptoms. Appropriate identification of this disorder depends on knowledge of its specific diagnostic features, most particularly its time-limited course. The clinician must also be aware that the syndrome can coexist with, exacerbate, or be exacerbated by other psychological distress or illness. Through the presentation of four case histories, the authors discuss the diagnostic complexities of PMTS and the tr

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a group of psycho behavioural symptoms experienced by many susceptible young women prior to menstruation. It is suggested that there is altered autonomic activity in the late leuteal phase of their endometrial cycle. The present study is aimed to see the autonomic reactivity in women suffering from PMS and to compare it with control ones. The results revealed that the autonomic activity-sympathetic as well as parasympathetic, is insignificantly higher in PMS group during follicular phase. During leuteal phase, the parasympathetic activity is significantly lowered

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a psychological and somatic disorder of unknown aetiology. The symptoms of PMS regularly occur during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and resolve by the end of menstruation. The severe and predominantly psychological form of PMS is called 'premenstrual dysphoric disorder'. PMS results from ovulation and appears to be caused by the progesterone produced following ovulation in women who have enhanced progesterone sensitivity. This enhanced sensitivity may be due to neurotransmitter dysfunction. Treatment is aimed at suppressing ovulation or reducing progest

Premenstrual syndrome is a legitimate illness consisting of the cyclic recurrence of symptoms (physical, mental and behavioural) in the late luteal phase of the menstrual cycle of sufficient severity to require treatment. The syndrome has a yet unknown aetiology, an uncertain and variable course, and an unidentified family history. Methods are available for diagnosis including obtaining a reliable history, thorough physical and mental examinations, laboratory tests to exclude other possible causes of symptoms, and daily prospective symptom ratings to confirm symptom patterns. Because there is

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is characterized by a wide variety of symptoms occurring over several days before menstruation. In the differential diagnosis, family physicians should consider other conditions such as chronic yeast infection, allergy, stress, hypoglycemia and primary dysmenorrhea. Each patient should complete a daily menstrual diary for two to three monthly cycles. This diary may help the physician to determine the cyclical nature of PMS and specific symptoms. For most PMS sufferers, initial treatment involves the physician's acknowledgement of the problem and advice about lifesty

BACKGROUND: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a combination of physical, psychological and social symptoms in women of reproductive age, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a severe type of the syndrome, previously known as late luteal phase dysphoric disorder (LLPDD). Both syndromes cause symptoms during the two weeks leading up to menstruation (the luteal phase). Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are increasingly used as a treatment for PMS and PMDD, either administered in the luteal phase or continuously. We undertook a systematic review to assess the evidence of the po

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a menstrual cycle-related disorder. Although the precise pathophysiology is not fully understood, it is increasingly believed that the central nervous system plays a vital role in the development of PMS. The aim of this study is to elucidate specific functional connectivity between the thalamus and cerebral cortex. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data were obtained from 20 PMS patients and 21 healthy controls (HCs). Seed-based functional connectivity between the thalamus and six cortical regions of interest, including the prefrontal cor

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is characterized by recurrent, moderate-to-severe affective, physical, and behavioral symptoms that develop during the luteal menstrual cycle and disappear within a few days of menstruation. Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a severe and disabling condition that can affect personal relationships and occupational activities. PMS occurs in 30-40% of reproductive-age females; PMDD affects 3-8% of this population. Although the etiology of PMS is unclear, several theories suggest increased sensitivity to normal hormonal changes and neurotransmitter abnormalities.

IMPORTANCE OF THE FIELD: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is among the most common health problems reported by reproductive-age women. Estimates indicate that up to 25% of women may warrant treatment for the distress or impaired functioning associated with the symptoms.
AREAS COVERED IN THIS REVIEW: The primary focus of this review is the clinical condition of PMS and randomized, placebo-controlled trials of PMS treatment. A literature search in PubMed was conducted for these topics. The most recent reports of specific treatments in controlled treatment studies and all meta-analyses were selected.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate prevalence of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and its associated factors among Thai nurses.
METHODS: The study was conducted in 423 nurses in a university hospital during October 2005 to March 2006. Prevalence of PMS was determined using a validated Thai version of Premenstrual Symptoms Screening Tool (PSST). Factors associated with PMS were analyzed using Student t-test and Chi-square test.
RESULTS: The prevalence of PMS in Thai nurses was 25.1%. Nurses with younger age, nulligravida, lower income, more coffee consumption, dysmenorrhea, and negative attitude toward men

The authors have identified six unusual manifestations of premenstrual syndrome: (i) typical premenstrual dysphoric disorder symptoms during ovulation; (ii) upper airway infection in the premenstrual phase that remits after onset of menstruation; (iii) recurrent perimenstrual erythematous and edematous skin plaques; (iv) hypomanic or manic state 2-3 days before onset of menstruation; (v) auditory hallucinations and delusion of reference, present only premenstrually; and (vi) remitted bipolar disorder presenting with premenstrual psychotic features. Psychiatrists should be aware of menstrual cy

OBJECTIVE: To study the prevalence of premenstrual syndrome and the factors associated with this, by comparing the obtained frequency with the self-reported frequency.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional population-based study, involving 1,395 women aged 15 to 49 years old in a medium-sized municipality in Southern Brazil, carried out in 2003. Questionnaires were applied to measure the prevalence of premenstrual syndrome by means of a score based on five premenstrual symptoms that interfered with family life or led to absence from work or school. Associations with socioeconomic, demographic a

Dysmenorrhea is the most frequent gynaecological problem in adolescent girls (the prevalence is 80-90%). Genetic influence, style of life (diet and physical activity) social, economical and cultural factors can affect symptoms. Prostaglandins and leucotrienes produced by endometrium, abnormal uterine smooth muscle contractility and modifications of the local blood flow are responsible for abdominal pain. Frequently daily activities are negatively affected (missing time at school) dysmenorrhoea can be primary or secondary to anatomical anomalies of internal genitalia or presence of synechie (po

The relationship between premenstrual tension syndrome and dietary intake was studied in a population of 20 young adult women. Caloric intake was measured during the 10 days preceding and following the menstrual cycle. Those women with more severe symptoms recorded a greater increase in caloric intake. Caloric intake during the premenstrual period also increased with age. It is hypothesized that this caloric intake may be due to increased beta-endorphin levels.

BACKGROUND: Women with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) typically experience a range of psychological and physiological symptoms that negatively affect their quality of life. Disruption in biological rhythms, including alterations of the sleep-wake cycle, have been implicated in PMS/PMDD, though literature is still growing to substantiate these findings. The objective of this study is to systematically review the available literature on biological rhythms disruption in PMS/PMDD.
METHODS: A literature search was conducted on four databases (Pubmed, Embase,
