Cardiovascular responses to stress after carotid baroreceptor denervation in humans.

Iatrogenic bilateral denervation of carotid sinus baroreceptors may occur as a complication of carotid body tumor resection and radiation therapy of the neck. The acute phase of the resulting syndrome of baroreflex failure is characterized by a limited blood pressure buffering capacity against excessive rise or fall in response to emotional and physical stimuli like sexual arousal and cold. Paroxysms of severe hypertension and tachycardia, accompanied by excessive increments in sympathetic tone and catecholamine plasma levels, were ascribed to loss of tonic inhibitory influence of baroreceptor

Naloxone reverses the hypnotic effect and the depressed baroreceptor reflex of halothane anaesthesia in the dog.

In order to evaluate the effect of an opioid antagonist on depressed intrinsic central vaso-motor drive (carotid sinus reflex) and high voltage slow delta waves in the EEG associated with halothane, naloxone was injected intravenously in a bolus of 100 or 200 micrograms.kg-1 on different days in the anaesthetized dog (0.64 Vol% halothane in oxygen). Only the 200 micrograms.kg-1 dose of naloxone reversed the halothane-induced depression of the blood pressure and heart rate response to clamping of both exteriorized common carotid arteries. The EEG changed from high voltage slow waves to low volt

Hypertension and hypotension due to baroreceptors dysfunction: A physician personal experience as a head and neck cancer patient.

Radiation to the head and neck can damage the baroreceptors located in the carotid artery. These baroreceptors help in regulating blood pressure by detecting the pressure of blood flowing through them, and sending messages to the central nervous system to increase or decrease the peripheral vascular resistance and cardiac output. Some individual treated with radiation develop low, labile or paroxysmal hypertension. This manuscript describes my personal experiences as well as other head and neck cancer survivors who received radiation therapy and experienced baroreceptor dysfunction. These pers

Carotid Baroreceptor Magnetic Activation and Beat-to-Beat Blood Pressure Variability, Implications to Treat Abrupt Blood Pressure Elevation in Labile Hypertension.

Mounting evidence suggests enhanced blood pressure (BP) variability (BPV) independent role in cardiovascular (CV) damage. The goal was to estimate the effect of the carotid baroreceptor (CB) magnetic stimulation on sudden high BP elevation. Mean femoral arterial BP (MAP), heart rate (HR), baroreflex sensitivity (BRS), and ear lobe skin microcirculatory blood flow, by microphotoelectric plethysmography (MPPG), were simultaneously recorded in conscious rabbits sedated by pentobarbital intravenous (i.v.) infusion (5 mg/kg/h) after 40 min CB exposure to 350 mT static magnetic field (SMF), by Nd2 -

Cardiovascular fingolimod effects on rapid baroreceptor unloading are counterbalanced by baroreflex resetting.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Initial cardiovascular fingolimod effects might compromise baroreflex responses to rapid blood pressure (BP) changes during common Valsalva-like maneuvers. This study evaluated cardiovascular responses to Valsalva maneuver (VM)-induced baroreceptor unloading and loading upon fingolimod initiation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-one patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis performed VMs before and 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 hours after fingolimod initiation. We recorded heart rate (HR) as RR intervals (RRI), systolic and diastolic BP (BPsys, BPdia) during VM ph

Novel and nonpharmacologic approaches to cardio-protection in hypertension.

Hypertension has wide (30-45 %) prevalence in the general population and is related to important increases in overall cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Despite lifestyle modifications and optimal medical therapy (three drugs, one being diuretic), about 5-20 % of hypertensives are affected by resistant hypertension. Chronic high blood pressure has adverse effects on the heart and other organs such as the kidneys and vasculature. Renal sympathetic denervation and baroreceptor stimulation are invasive approaches initially investigated to treat resistant hypertension. Their pleiotropic effec

[A stress-dependent pulsatile cardiovascular model as the basis for regulating artificial hearts].

The development and simulation of closed-loop control of blood pumps requires a pulsatile model of the cardiovascular system that takes into account the natural mechanisms of adaptation during exercise. In this article, a model is described which takes account of the baroreceptor reflex, the change in heart rate, contractility of the heart, and the peripheral resistance during exercise, as well as venous tone, and the nonlinearity of vessel compliance. In addition, a model of the artificial heart is presented, in which the nonlinear limitation of the stroke volume is taken into account, and th

Volume expansion attenuates baroreflex sensitivity in the conscious nonhuman primate.

We examined the effect of intravascular volume expansion (VE) on the arterial baroreflex control of pulse rate (PR) in conscious, chronically instrumented monkeys tethered in their cages. A total of five monkeys was studied after surgical implantation of catheters in the descending aorta, the left atrium, and the internal jugular vein. Mean arterial blood pressure (MABP)-PR stimulus response curves were constructed by decreasing and increasing blood pressure with nitroprusside and phenylephrine, respectively. The data were analyzed with a regression analysis that generated a sigmoid curve and

An ultrastructural investigation of a baroreceptor zone in the common carotid artery of the domestic fowl.

The wall of the common carotid artery of the domestic fowl possesses a baroreceptor zone around the origin of the artery to the carotid body. The zone comprises about 20 small foci which have undergone a fibrous modification. Within these foci there are bare endings, which closely resemble ultrastructurally the baroreceptors of the mammalian carotid sinus in their mitochondrial content, relationship to collagen and elastic fibres, and abnormal organelles. These should be slowly adapting baroreceptors, similar functionally to the baroreceptors of the mammalian carotid sinus. Also present in the

The initiation and maintenance of bradycardia in a diving mammal, the muskrat, Ondatra zibethica.

1. The cardiac and respiratory responses shown by muskrats in both unrestrained and restrained dives have been compared with responses elicited by stimulation of a number of cardio-depressant receptor inputs, in an attempt to determine which are most important in initiating and maintaining diving bradycardia. 2. In unrestrained voluntary dives heart rate fell from 310 +/- 3 to 54 +/- 3 beats min-1 in 1 to 2 sec, which was significantly below that seen in dives by restrained unanaesthetized or anaesthetized animals. 3. Pouring water on the external nares during maintained artificial ventilation

Loss of chemoreceptive properties of the rabbit carotid body after destruction of the glomus cells.

Glomus cells of the rabbit carotid body were destroyed by local freezing. Electrophysiological recording of baroreceptor afferent activities showed that carotid sinus nerve regeneration was completed after 3 months. Nevertheless, ventilatory reaction as well as chemoreceptor afferent activity were no longer observed in response to the usual stimuli of arterial chemoreceptors (O2 test, NaCN). Results support the view that glomus cells are necessary for chemoreception and question the specificity of their afferent innervation.

The loop gain of autonomic reflex function in orthostatic hypotension.

The loop gain (G) of the autonomic reflex function in orthostatic stress was assessed in anesthetized dogs subjected to 45 and 90 degrees head-up tilt. We observed the magnitude of orthostatic hypotension before and after 1) sinus denervation and vagotomy (SDVT), or 2) ganglionic blockade (GB) with hexamethonium. The decreases in arterial pressure during the orthostatic stress before and after interruption of the autonomic reflex from either the afferent or efferent limb were defined as E and D, respectively. The loop G of the compensatory system was calculated using closed-loop analysis: G =

Carotid body chemoceptors: physiological role in buffering fall in blood pressure during sleep.

In cats whose aortic nerves were severed subsequent deafferentation of the carotid body chemoceptors (the carotid sinus baroceptors remaining intact) did not change arterial pressure during wakefulness or light sleep, but the falls in pressure during deep sleep were markedly exaggerated. Subsequent baroceptive denervation did not modify the hypotensive effect.
