The frontal eye field (FEF) in prosimian primates was identified as a small cortical region, above and anterior to the anterior frontal sulcus, from which saccadic eye movements were evoked with electrical stimulation. Tracer injections revealed FEF connections with cortical and subcortical structures participating in higher order visual processing. Ipsilateral cortical connections were the densest with adjoining parts of the dorsal premotor and prefrontal cortex (PFC). Label in a region corresponding to supplementary eye field (SEF) of other primates, suggests the existence of SEF in galagos.

Brain structure of the shark Scyliorhinus canicula has been studied on the basis of a series of embryonic stages. The incubation time was 157 days in average (under constant conditions of 15 centigrades and density of 1.026). 1. The first predominant characters of the external brain shape are the optic tectum, cerebellum, telencephali hemispheres and oculomotor root. In addition, the brain axis is characterized by new flexures in the cerebellar and prosencephalic level. A nuchal flexure in absent. 2. The ontogenetic pattern of the matrix layer differs in different brain parts. Generally, ventr

The rostal mesencephalon at the level of the posterior commissure was studied by light microscopy in two patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease, one patient with Alzheimer's disease, and one patient with senile dementia of Alzheimer's type. In the Parkinsonian cases, the rostral part of the nucleus of Edinger Westphal disclosed Lewy bodies in 3% of the neurons, neurofibrillary degeneration in 2% of the neurons, and a 54% neuronal loss. In Alzheimer's disease, 2% of Edinger Westphal neurons contained neurofibrillary degeneration, whereas in senile dementia of Alzheimer's type only rare ne

The primary visual pathways, in particular those to the lateral geniculate body, of 11 albino and 7 pigmented rabbits, were studied using the method of anterograde labelling with horseradish peroxidase following injection of the tracer into the vitreous body of one eye. A heavy projection to the contralateral dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus was seen in all animals. In both albino and pigmented animals a region devoid of label was present in the medial part of the alpha sector of the nucleus. This region corresponded to a compact, oval or wedge-shaped field of terminal label in the ipsilatera

The efferent connections of the tectum mesencephali in the shark Scyliorhinus canicula and the ray Raja clavata have been studied by using the silver impregnation methods. of Nauta-Gygax ('54) and Fink-Heimer ('67). After a unilateral lesion made through all six tectal layers, three distinct pathways could be observed: 1) an ascending projection both ipsi- and contralateral to the pretectal area, the dorsomedial region of the thalamus, and the lateral geniculate body, 2) a commisural projection to the contralateral tectum and intercollicular nucleus, and 3) a descending projection to the rhomb

BACKGROUND: Dorsal midbrain syndrome (also known as Parinaud syndrome and pretectal syndrome) is a well-known complication of tumors of the pineal region. However, there are few reports regarding outcomes, especially in children. The purpose of this study was to report the ophthalmic outcomes in a group of children with pineal tumors treated at a single institution.
METHODS: The medical records of pediatric patients diagnosed with pineal region tumors and evaluated at our ophthalmology clinic were studied retrospectively. Descriptive statistics were used to assess rate of dorsal midbrain synd

Attention-Deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a central nervous system (CNS) disorder frequently associated with other psychiatric disorders. Pathophysiology processes at stake in ADHD are still under investigation and interestingly neuroimaging data points to modulated brain connectivity in patients. The genetic spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) model has been widely used to study pathophysiological underpinnings of ADHD and resting-state brain connectivity using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Here, functional ultrasound imaging, a new technique enabling fast measurement of ce

The localization of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) has been well described in most classes of vertebrates but not in adult lampreys. The question if the GABA distribution is similar throughout the vertebrate subphylum is therefore still to be addressed. We here investigate two lamprey species, the sea lamprey, Petromyzon marinus, and the river lamprey, Lampetra fluviatilis, and compare the GABA pattern with that of other vertebrates. The present immunohistochemical study provides an anatomical basis for the general distribution and precise localization of GABAergic neurons in the adult lamprey

Anterograde and retrograde tracing methods were used to compare the subcortical projections of area 17 in ZRDCT-an, anophthalmic mice with those of sighted C57BL mice. In both groups, area 17 projected to the dorsocaudal striatum, the reticular, lateral and lateral posterior nuclei, the dorsal and vental lateral geniculate nuclei, the zona incerta, the anterior and posterior pretectal nuclei, the stratum griseum superficiale of the superior colliculus and the dorsolateral pons. Occasional labeled fibers in both groups were also seen in the ventrobasal nucleus, but it was not clear whether or n

Neuropathic pain is one of the most challenging types of pain to diagnose and treat, a problem exacerbated by the lack of a quantitative biomarker. Recently, several clinical and preclinical studies have shown that neuropathic pain induces cerebral hemodynamic changes as a result of neuroplasticity in the brain. Our hypothesis in this study is that neuropathic pain leads to cerebral hemodynamic changes over postoperative time in a spinal nerve ligation (SNL) rat model, which has not been longitudinally explored previously. Furthermore, by identifying multiple regional hemodynamic features that

Epibatidine, a frog skin alkaloid, is a nicotinic receptor agonist with potent analgesic activity. We used in vitro receptor autoradiographic techniques to map binding sites for [3H]epibatidine in rat brain, and those for another nicotinic agonist, [3H]cytisine. Both [3H]epibatidine and [3H]cytisine are excellent radioligands for autoradiography. [3H]Epibatidine in particular binds with very high affinity and extremely low nonspecific binding. In the present study, the distribution of binding was almost identical for both radioligands and closely resembled that of previously published autoradi

Bilaterally symmetric organisms need to exchange information between the two sides of their bodies in order to integrate sensory inputs and coordinate motor control. This exchange occurs through commissures formed by neurons that project axons across the midline to the contralateral side of the central nervous system. The posterior commissure is the first transversal axonal tract of the embryonic vertebrate brain. It is located in the dorsal portion of the prosomere 1, at the caudal diencephalon. The axons of the posterior commissure principally come from neurons of ventrolateral and dorsolate

Neonates treated for acute respiratory failure experience episodes of hypoxia. The hippocampus, a structure essential for memory, is particularly vulnerable to such insults. Hence, some neonates undergoing treatment for acute respiratory failure might sustain bilateral hippocampal pathology early in life and memory problems later in childhood. We investigated this possibility in a cohort of 40 children who had been treated neonatally for acute respiratory failure but were free of overt neurological impairment. The cohort had mean hippocampal volumes (HVs) significantly below normal control val

The laboratory mouse is increasingly a subject for visual system investigation, but there has been no comprehensive evaluation of this species' visual projections. Here, projections were visualized and mapped following intraocular injection of cholera toxin B subunit. Tissue was processed using standard procedures applied to 30 μm free-floating sections with diaminobenzidine as the chromogen. The mouse retina projects to ~46 brain regions, including 14 not previously described in this species. These include two amygdaloid nuclei, the horizontal limb of the diagonal band, the paraventricular hy

The paralemniscal tegmental area has been determined in the brain of the New World moustached bat, Pteronotus p. parnellii, by electrical microstimulation eliciting echolocation calls and pinna movements. It is located in the dorsal tegmentum rostral and medial to the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus and is characterized by medium sized and large neurons. Tracer injections (WGA-HRP) showed that the most intense input to the paralemniscal tegmental area originates in the intermediate and deep layers of the homolateral superior colliculus. The strong projections from the ipsi- and contral

BACKGROUND: The anterior pretectal nucleus (APtN) activates descending mechanisms of pain control. This study evaluated whether the APtN also controls neuropathic pain in rats.
METHODS: The hypersensitivity to mechanical stimulation with an electronic von Frey apparatus and the number of Fos-immunoreactive (Fos-ir) neurons in the APtN were evaluated in rats before and after chronic constriction injury of the sciatic nerve.
RESULTS: The tactile hypersensitivity was characterized by an initial phase (the 2 days following the injury) and a maintenance phase (the subsequent 7 days). The injectio

The present study describes the location and nuclear organization of the serotonergic system in a representative of the order Crocodylia, the Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus). We found evidence for serotonergic neurons in three regions of the brain, including the diencephalon, rostral and caudal brainstem, as previously reported in several other species of reptile. Within the diencephalon we found neurons in the periventricular organ of the hypothalamus, but not in the infundibular recess as noted in some other reptilian species. In addition we found serotonergic neurons in the pretectal

Retinal projections in the house musk shrew (Suncus murinus) were determined by the anterograde transport of wheat germ agglutinin conjugated to horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP). Unilateral injection of WGA-HRP into the vitreous body resulted in the terminal labeling of the optic projections in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCH), the ventral (CGLv) and dorsal (CGLd) lateral geniculate nuclei, the intergeniculate leaflet (IGL), the pretectum, the superficial layers of the superior colliculus (CS), and the dorsal terminal nucleus (DTN) of the accessory optic system (AOS). Fearful stimuli elicit a mix of active (e.g., evasion) and passive (e.g., freezing) behaviors in a wide range of species, including zebrafish (Danio rerio). However, it is not clear if individual differences in fear responses exist and, if so, what parts of the brain may underlie such differences. To probe these questions, we developed a contextual fear conditioning paradigm for zebrafish that uses conspecific alarm substance (CAS) as an unconditioned stimulus where fish associate CAS administration with a specific tank. To identify individual differences, we collected behavioral responses fro

Serotonin (5-HT) is an evolutionarily conserved monoaminergic neurotransmitter found in the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system across invertebrates and vertebrates. Although the distribution of 5-HT-immunoreactive (5-HT-ir) neurons is investigated in various fish species, the organization of these neurons in cichlid fishes is poorly understood. These fish are known for their adaptability to diverse environments, food habits, and complex mating and breeding behaviors, including parental care. In this paper, we describe the organization of 5-HT-ir neurons in the brain of the ci
