Endocrine neoplasia in New World primates.

Of 1,106 New World primates necropsied from the National Zoological Park (Washington, D.C.) and the Department of Comparative Pathology, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (Baltimore, Maryland) 22 (1.9%) animals were identified with 27 neoplasms. Of this group, nine animals (two females, seven males) had a total of 13 endocrine neoplasms. All animals were adults, with an age range of 2.7-25 years (average, 12.1 years). Seven were Callitrichidae and two were Cebidae. The adrenal gland was the most affected organ, with seven (53.8%) neoplasms, followed by the pituitary and thyroid gland

Etiology of cerebral vasospasm in primates.

A primate model was used to determine whether oxyhemoglobin (OxyHb), methemoglobin (MetHb), or bilirubin is likely to be responsible for cerebral vasospasm following subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Forty cynomolgus monkeys were randomly assigned to one of five groups. On Day 0, each animal underwent angiography followed by right craniectomy and placement of an Ommaya reservoir with its catheter adjacent to the right middle cerebral artery (MCA). The animals received intrathecal injections twice a day for 6 days of one of the following solutions: mock cerebrospinal fluid (CSF); OxyHb; MetHb; bil

Ocular toxoplasmosis in immunosuppressed nonhuman primates.

To investigate the role of cellular immunodeficiency in recurrent toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis, six Cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) with healed toxoplasmic lesions of the retina were immunosuppressed by total lymphoid irradiation. Three months prior to irradiation 30,000 Toxoplasma gondii organisms of the Beverley strain had been inoculated onto the macula of eye in each monkey via a pars plana approach. Toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis developed in each animal, and lesions were allowed to heal without treatment. During total lymphoid irradiation animals received 2000 centigrays (cGy) o

Nutritional deficiency anemias in nonhuman primates.

The purpose of this report is to review past studies in which anemias, occurred spontaneously in nonhuman primates due to feeding inadequate diets or were induced by feeding diets deficient in a nutrient. Included is a review of anemias induced by deficiencies of iron, niacin, pyridoxine, pantothenic acid, protein, riboflavin, cyanocobalamin, folic acid, ascorbic acid and alpha-tocopherol. The anemia induced by deficiency of each nutrient is discussed with emphasis on the major clinical signs as well as peripheral blood and bone marrow pathology. Results of supplementation of the diet followin

Intraocular cyclophotocoagulation. Histopathologic evaluation in primates.

Intraocular cyclophotocoagulation with endoscopic visualization, following lensectomy and anterior vitrectomy, was performed on 14 eyes of eight rhesus monkeys. Two eyes received lensectomy and vitrectomy without laser treatment. One eye of each animal was studied one to eight months postoperatively, while the contralateral eyes were enucleated for study immediately after surgery. Histopathologic changes in the treated ciliary processes immediately after therapy included variable degrees of disruption in the epithelial layers and bleeding, while the late changes ranged from partial disruption

Neodymium-YAG laser sclerostomy in primates.

A one-stage sclerostomy procedure was performed "noninvasively" in four cynomolgus monkeys solely with the neodymium-YAG laser. The neodymium (Nd)-YAG laser was focused, for the most part, a few diopters behind the focus of the helium-neon aiming beam. This enabled optical breakdown to occur entirely within the sclera to produce a perforating micropuncture of the scleral tissue. Two monkeys were treated with higher energy (23 and 24 joules) and two were treated at lower energy levels (12 and 14 joules). An immediate reduction of intraocular pressure in the treated eye was associated with a sig

De novo sterologenesis in intact primates.

Recent studies have demonstrated that in intact rodents, extrahepatic tissues are much more important sites of de novo sterologenesis than previously appreciated. The present investigation was undertaken to localize the sites of cholesterol and nonsaponifiable lipid synthesis in intact primates. Tritiated water was employed as the radiolabeled tracer for quantifying sterol synthesis. Our results indicate that in the intact primate, tissues other than the liver account for the majority of the newly synthesized cholesterol (74.5% to 84.4%) and nonsaponifiable lipids (77.3% of 86.5%). This extrah

Hydrogel keratophakia in non-human primates.

We performed sixteen keratophakia procedures in nine non-human primates using various hydrogel lenses (38% to 79% water) as donor corneas (lenticules). The lenses were treated as if they were donor human corneas using currently practiced keratophakia procedures including microkeratome resection of the recipient cornea, staining of the lenses before cryolathing and, in some cases, lathing according to a modified computer program after which the lenses were inserted into a previously dissected recipient lamellar pocket. This technique was able to produce steepening of the cornea up to 44.8 diopt

Hyperalimentation in primates. A nutritional model.

To establish the subhuman primate as an effective laboratory animal in parenteral nutrition research, 18 male macaque monkeys were adapted to chronic chair restraint and maintained on intravenous nutrition for 1- and 2-week periods. The animals remained in the restraint chairs for 11.6 +/- (2.3) weeks and the inferior vena cava catheters remained for 53 +/- (7.8) days. Catheter and metabolic complications during intravenous nutrition infusion were few and morbidity was low. The animals maintained weight, serum albumin, and serum transferrin levels as well as a positive nitrogen balance during

Descending optic nerve degeneration in primates.

We cut the optic nerve at the orbital apex in squirrel monkeys to study the descending degeneration of optic nerve axons and their ganglion cell bodies. We could not detect progressive disintegration of the axon from the site of injury back to the cell body. Instead, the entire length of individual axons seemed to degenerate simultaneously as early as 3 weeks and as late as 6 weeks after injury, as judged both by ultrastructural integrity and by continued slow axonal transport, a reflection of local physiologic function. We could not relate the time of degeneration to the distance of the injur

Hydatid disease in four nonhuman primates.

Hydatid disease was detected in 4 nonhuman primates (Galago crassicaudatus, Lemur catta, and 2 Macaca mulatta) at the Oregon Regional Primate Research Center. Involvement extended from 2 1/2 to 7 1/2 years. A 6-cm cyst was surgically removed from the thoracic cavity of 1 macaque; 6 years later multiple cysts were found in its abdominal cavity. Lesions found in the primates at necropsy included compression or displacement of the lungs, hydroureter and hydronephrosis, and distension of the abdomen--all related to impingement of developing cysts.

Melioidosis in imported non-human primates.

In 1969, five cases of melioidosis in three separate outbreaks were diagnosed in nonhuman primates in the United States. In the first outbreak, two stump-tailed macaque monkeys (Macaca arctoides) developed signs of the disease approximately 6 months after purchase. A third animal, a chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), probably acquired its infection from one of these monkeys. Two other unrelated cases involving a pig-tailed monkey (Macaca nemestrina) and a rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) were diagnosed. These monkeys had been imported 3 years and 6 months, respectively, prior to the recognized onset

Cryptosporidium and Giardia in Captive Primates.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to diagnose the presence of Giardia spp. and Cryptosporidium spp. in captive primates in the State of Pará, Brazil. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fecal samples were collected from 76 captive Neotropical primates representing 13 species. Samples were obtained immediately after defecation, refrigerated without preservatives, and processed within 48 h. The central portion of each sample was examined for Giardia spp. cysts and Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts using direct Lugol staining and modified Ziehl-Neelsen techniques, respectively. Non-human primates in prion diseases.

The fascinating history of prion diseases is intimately linked to the use of nonhuman primates as experimental models, which brought so fundamental and founding information about transmissibility, pathogenesis, and resistance of prions. These models are still of crucial need for risk assessment of human health and may contribute to pave a new way towards the moving field of prion-like entities which now includes the main human neurodegenerative diseases (especially Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases).

Social knowledge and signals in primates.

Primates are notable for having a rich and detailed understanding of their social environment and there has been great interest in the evolution and function of social knowledge in primates. Indeed, primates have been shown to have impressive understandings of not only other group members but also the complex relationships among them. To be useful, however, social knowledge requires memories from previous encounters and observations about individual traits that are stable. Here, we argue that social systems or traits that make social knowledge more costly or less accurate will favor signals th

Fluoxetine decreases stereotypic behavior in primates.

BACKGROUND: Primates reared in captivity may display stereotypic behaviors. These behaviors are arguably reminiscent of human obsessive-compulsive or posttraumatic symptoms, which respond to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Captive primates with marked stereotypic behaviors were entered into a randomized controlled study of the SSRI, fluoxetine. METHODS: A sample of 10 vervet monkeys with behaviors such as marked saluting, somersaulting, weaving, or head tossing was selected. Subjects were randomized to receive fluoxetine 1 mg/kg for 6 weeks (n=5) or no treatment (n=5). A rate
