Optimism predicts resilience in repatriated prisoners of war: a 37-year longitudinal study.

Resilience, exhibiting intact psychological functioning despite exposure to trauma, is one perspective as to why some people who are exposed to trauma do not develop symptoms. This study examines the prisoner of war experience to expand our understanding of this phenomenon in extreme cases of trauma such as prolonged captivity, malnourishment, and physical and psychological torture. The study examined the United States' longest detained American prisoners of war, those held in Vietnam in the 1960s through early 1970s. A logistic regression analysis using resilience, defined as never receiving

Schistosoma haematobium infection among Ethiopian prisoners of war (1977-1988) returning from Somalia.

Fifty Ethiopian male prisoners of war aged 20-34 years returning from Somalia were examined at the Schistosomiasis Diagnostic Laboratory of the Institute of Pathobiology, Addis Abeba University, Addis Abeba in 1988. Medical history was obtained and their urine was examined by the filtration technique. Recovered eggs of S. haematobium were allowed to hatch as a test for viability. Positive patients were treated with praziquantel at a single dose of 40mg per kg. 94% of the prisoners gave history of haematuria and 96% gave history of treatment for schistosomiasis while in Somalia. S. haematobium

Clinical and subclinical nutritional neurological damage in former war prisoners of the Japanese.

Five former war prisoners of the Japanese were clinically evaluated and intensively investigated for evidence of neurological disease. On release from imprisonment 36 years previously they were known to have a single neurological problem each, attributable to nutritional damage to the nervous system (four had optic atrophy and one a peripheral neuropathy). The present assessment confirmed these persisting neurological problems; but in addition two patients were found to have extrapyramidal and one pyramidal disease, one was demented, and two had evidence of non-dominant hemisphere damage on ps

Persisting nutritional neuropathy amongst former war prisoners.

Of 898 former Far East prisoners of war, assessed between 1968 and 1981, 49 (5.5%) had evidence of persisting symptomatic neurological disease dating back to their periods of malnutrition in captivity. The commonest syndromes were peripheral neuropathy (often of "burning foot" type), optic atrophy, and sensori-neural deafness. Though nutritional neuropathies disappeared soon after release in most ex-Far East prisoners of war, in some they have persisted up to 36 years since exposure to the nutritional insult.

[Strongyloides infections in former prisoners of war in South-East Asia in the second World War; additional information from serological diagnosis].

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the efficacy of ELISA serology in patients with Strongyloides infection acquired during World War II and maintained through repeated autoinfection. DESIGN: Descriptive. SETTING: Laboratory of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, Leiden, the Netherlands. METHODS: Parasitological and clinical data on 193 ex-prisoners of war (South-east Asia) were presented previously (1990) by Verburg and De Geus. ELISA using L-3 S. ratti antigen was carried out with sera of these patients and the results were compared with those of repeated stool examinations using Baermann's method. RES

Cutaneous melioidosis in a man who was taken as a prisoner of war by the Japanese during World War II.

Melioidosis, an infection caused by the gram-negative bacillus Burkholderia pseudomallei, is endemic to Southeast Asia and Northern Australia. Human infection is acquired through contact with contaminated water via percutaneous inoculation. Clinical manifestations range from skin and soft tissue infection to pneumonia with sepsis. We report a case of a man who was taken as a prisoner of war by the Japanese during World War II who presented with a nonhealing ulcer on his right hand 62 years after the initial exposure.

Doctors in Japanese prisoner-of-war camps in Taiwan in the Second World War and their personal accounts of captivity.

Taiwan became a Japanese colony in 1895 and in the Second World War was geographically central in Japan's wartime possessions and strategically important, with military airfields, ports, and a copper mine. Its sixteen prisoner-of-war camps included four labour camps. Taiwan was also the first place to which senior officers and colonial officials were dispersed after the Allied surrenders in Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines. Forty-five doctors from the British, Australian, Dutch and American forces were identified who spent at least part of their captivity on Taiwan. This art

Comorbidity and course of psychiatric disorders in a community sample of former prisoners of war.

OBJECTIVE: The authors assessed DSM-III-R disorders among American former prisoners of war. Comorbidity, time of onset, and the relationship of trauma severity to complicated versus uncomplicated posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were examined. METHOD: A community sample (N=262) of men exposed to combat and imprisonment was assessed by clinicians using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R. RESULTS: The rates of comorbidity among the men with PTSD were lower than rates from community samples assessed by lay interviewers. Over one-third of the cases of lifetime PTSD were uncompli

Later life disability status following incarceration as a prisoner of war.

OBJECTIVE: Incarceration-related predictors of later life disability in former prisoners of war (POWs) have not been previously described. The objective of this project was to identify aspects of POW incarceration which are associated with later life disability status. METHODS: Cross-sectional retrospective study of 328 former U.S. military personnel held as POWs (World War II and Korean and Vietnam Wars) who presented for evaluations at a Veterans Affairs medical center between January 1, 1997 and December 31, 2004 outcome measures were: (1) total number of later life disability conditions a

Marital relations among former prisoners of war: contribution of posttraumatic stress disorder, aggression, and sexual satisfaction.

In this study, the authors examined the marital adjustment, spousal aggression, and sexual satisfaction of prisoners of war (POWs) 3 decades after their release. More specifically, the authors examined the extent to which impaired marital relations among former POWs are an outcome of their captivity or of the posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that some of them developed. The authors compared 25 former POWs with PTSD, 85 former POWs without PTSD, and 104 control veterans. The findings reveal that the marital problems of former POWs are more related to PTSD than to their captivity. PTSD is re

Sleep and resilience: a longitudinal 37-year follow-up study of Vietnam repatriated prisoners of war.

This study examined sleep histories associated with resilience after trauma defined as a continuous lack of psychiatric illness across 37 years. Data were drawn from a 37-year follow-up examination of the effects of the Vietnam prisoner of war (POW) experience. The Robert E. Mitchell Center for POW Studies is a unique institution holding the only longitudinal study of the effects of the American POW experience in existence. The study used a sample of 440 Vietnam repatriated prisoners of war (RPWs). Psychiatric disorders were assessed at repatriation (1973) and were continued annually by a psyc

Cognitive deficits and psychopathology among former prisoners of war and combat veterans of the Korean conflict.

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to describe the long-term psychological and psychiatric sequelae of prisoner of war (POW) confinement against the backdrop of psychiatric evaluations of Korean conflict repatriates more than 35 years ago. METHOD: A group of 22 POWs and a group of 22 combat veteran survivors of the Korean conflict were compared on measures of problem solving, personality characteristics, mood states, and psychiatric clinical diagnoses by means of a battery of psychometric instruments and structured clinical interviews. RESULTS: Although the two groups were similar in backgr

A serological test for the diagnosis of Strongyloides antibodies in ex Far East Prisoners of War.

This paper gives the results of an ELISA test for Strongyloides stercoralis antibodies in a group of 436 ex Far East Prisoners of War (FEPOWs). Antigen was obtained from third-stage larvae of Strongyloides cebus. Sensitivity of the test is 97%, with a specificity of 99%. The test is being investigated further as regards cross-reactions with other helminths, but initial results look promising.
