The small group in problem-based learning: more than a cognitive 'learning' experience for first-year medical students in a diverse population.

In problem-based learning (PBL) curricula, first-year students need to adapt to a new learning environment and an unfamiliar new pedagogy. The small-group tutorial potentially offers a learning environment where students can become self-directed learners, collaborating with other group members to achieve individual and group learning goals. At the end of the first six-week theme in a relatively new PBL curriculum, new medical students were canvassed about coping with PBL (self-directed learning; content; time management; resources) and the value of the small-group tutorial, the latter of which

What do we know about cognitive and motivational effects of small group tutorials in problem-based learning?

Students collaborating in small groups is a characteristic of problem-based learning (PBL) that is receiving increased consideration in the literature. In this paper findings from studies in this area are synthesized and discussed. A distinction is made between studies focusing on cognitive effects of group learning and studies focusing on motivational effects of group learning. Studies concentrating on the cognitive effects of small-group PBL seem to demonstrate that activation of prior knowledge, recall of information, causal reasoning or theory building, cognitive conflicts leading to conce

Validation of a performance assessment instrument in problem-based learning tutorials using two cohorts of medical students.

Although problem-based learning (PBL) has been widely used in medical schools, few studies have attended to the assessment of PBL processes using validated instruments. This study examined reliability and validity for an instrument assessing PBL performance in four domains: Problem Solving, Use of Information, Group Process, and Professionalism. Two cohorts of medical students (N = 310) participated in the study, with 2 years of PBL evaluation data extracted from archive rated by a total of 158 faculty raters. Analyses based on generalizability theory were conducted for reliability examination

Perceptions of Undergraduate Medical Students Regarding Problem-Based Learning (PBL) at Kathmandu University : A Cross-sectional Study from Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Problem-based learning (PBL) is a student-centered innovative instructional approach in which students define their learning objectives using triggers from predefined problems in case scenarios. The PBL approach in medicine emphasizes real-world problem-solving and develops students' capacity for clinical reasoning. It also contributes to the development of interpersonal and communication skills, promotes self-directed learning (SDL), improves the motivation and enthusiasm of students for their profession and maintains professional ethics and behavior. This study aims to explore th

The effect of problem-based learning after coronary heart disease - a randomised study in primary health care (COR-PRIM).

BACKGROUND: Cardiac rehabilitation is effective after coronary heart disease (CHD). However, risk factors remain, and patients report fear for recurrence during recovery. Problem-based learning is a pedagogical method, where patients work self-directed in small groups with problem solving of real-life situations to manage CHD risk factors and self-care. We aimed to demonstrate the better effectiveness of problem-based learning over home-sent patient information for evaluating long-term effects of patient empowerment and self-care in patients with CHD. Hypothesis tested: One year of problem-bas

Problem-based learning design multi-objective optimization to smart education: a digital transformation digital literacy model of higher education.

Data-driven approaches of instructional design are more necessary than ever for higher education institutions in the era of digital transformation, especially when faced with noisy and heterogenous educational data. In the digital transformation age, the requirement for data-driven approaches to instructional design that are stable for educational data is growing. Past studies of smart education and problem-based learning (PBL) have been mostly descriptive models or single-dataset studies, with few studies providing evidence for robustness-aware instructional design under different data charac

Scaffolding problem-based learning in postgraduate immunology: a pyramidal mind-mapping approach to teaching complex immune mechanisms in COVID-19.

Problem-based learning (PBL) is an effective strategy for developing higher-order cognitive skills in biomedical education; however, structured exposure is often introduced late in postgraduate immunology curricula, leaving students insufficiently prepared for complex, independent learning tasks. Teaching immunity to COVID-19 presents additional challenges due to the need to integrate innate, adaptive, and cytokine-mediated immune pathways. The objective of this study was to quantitatively evaluate the effect of a pyramidal PBL intervention using structured mind mapping on academic performance

The effect of 3D printing integrated with problem-based learning on AGP training for thoracolumbar fractures: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Thoracolumbar fractures are common and complex spinal injuries, critical to the training of assistant general practitioners (AGP). Traditional lecture-based teaching struggles to effectively convey the intricate three-dimensional anatomy of these fractures. While both Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and 3D printing (3DP) have demonstrated individual benefits in medical education, their combined effect has not been rigorously evaluated for AGP training on thoracolumbar fractures. This randomized controlled trial (RCT) aimed to compare the effectiveness of a 3D printing-integrated PBL a

Using interpersonal reconstructive therapy to address comorbid problems organized by attachment-based learning: The case of Don.

Feature heterogeneity and diagnostic overlap occur regularly among patients in clinical settings. In interpersonal reconstructive therapy (IRT), a case formulation focused on patterns learned in close attachment relationships guides intervention choices. This study illustrates how IRT formulation and treatment proceed, and how it may also fail when there is not close adherence to underlying principles. Don is a music professor in his 40's with a significant trauma history and complex diagnostic profile that includes many hospitalizations and suicide attempts. He qualified for several diagnosti

Atypical brainstem representation of onset and formant structure of speech sounds in children with language-based learning problems.

This study investigated how the human auditory brainstem represents constituent elements of speech sounds differently in children with language-based learning problems (LP, n = 9) compared to normal children (NL, n = 11), especially under stress of rapid stimulation. Children were chosen for this study based on performance on measures of reading and spelling and measures of syllable discrimination. In response to the onset of the speech sound /da/, wave V-V(n) of the auditory brainstem response (ABR) had a significantly shallower slope in LP children, suggesting longer duration and/or smaller
