Cognitive speed of processing training in older adults with visual impairments.

PURPOSE: To examine whether older adults with vision impairment differentially benefit from cognitive speed of processing training (SPT) relative to healthy older adults. METHODS: Secondary data analyses were conducted from a randomised trial on the effects of SPT among older adults. The effects of vision impairment as indicated by (1) near visual acuity, (2) contrast sensitivity, (3) self-reported cataracts and (4) self-reported other eye conditions (e.g., glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, optic neuritis, and retinopathy) among participants randomised to either SPT or a s

Cognitive processing speed in older adults: relationship with white matter integrity.

Cognitive processing slows with age. We sought to determine the importance of white matter integrity, assessed by diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), at influencing cognitive processing speed among normal older adults, assessed using a novel battery of computerized, non-verbal, choice reaction time tasks. We studied 131 cognitively normal adults aged 55-87 using a cross-sectional design. Each participant underwent our test battery, as well as MRI with DTI. We carried out cross-subject comparisons using tract-based spatial statistics. As expected, reaction time slowed significantly with age. In dif

Accuracy and speed of orthographic processing in persons with developmental dyslexia.

A group of 39 persons (20 male and 19 female, 11.0 to 32.5 yr.) with developmental dyslexia and 42 controls (21 male and 21 female, 11.2 to 32.3 years) were compared on computerized tests of sight word reading, nonword decoding, and spelling recognition. The subjects with developmental dyslexia performed significantly slower and less accurately than controls on all tasks. Further, the effect size of the group differences was larger for the older group. Within-group analyses showed a significant difference by age group on accuracy. Only the control group showed a significant age difference betw

Myelin damage in radiologically isolated syndrome is associated with decreased processing speed.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment (CI) is a common feature of multiple sclerosis (MS). Radiologically isolated syndrome (RIS) can demonstrate CI patterns similar to MS, providing an opportunity to explore the associations between CI and early stage disease pathology. OBJECTIVES: To investigate myelin damage in RIS normal appearing white matter (NAWM) using the myelin heterogeneity index (MHI) and to determine the relationship between MHI and processing speed. METHODS: A total of 28 people with RIS and 22 controls completed an MRI, including multi-component T2 mapping to calculate MHI for whol

Sex differences in Parkinson disease-associated episodic memory and processing speed deficits.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to address a gap in the data on cognitive sex differences in persons living with Parkinson disease (PD). There is some evidence that cognitive dysfunction is more severe in male PD, however data on episodic memory and processing speed is incomplete. METHODS: One hundred and sixty-seven individuals with a diagnosis of PD were included in this study. Fifty-six of those individuals identified as female. The California Verbal Learning Test 1st edition and the Wechsler Memory Scale 3rd edition were used to evaluate verbal and visuospatial episodic memory and the Wechsle

Cerebral Microbleeds Are Associated with Impairments in Executive Function and Processing Speed.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral microbleed (CMB) is an increasingly important risk factor for cognitive impairment due to population aging. Controversies, however, remain regarding the exact association between CMB and cognitive dysfunction. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine the relationship between CMB burden and cognitive impairment, and also explore the characteristics of cognitive decline in CMB patients for middle-aged and elderly people. METHODS: The present cross-sectional study included 174 participants (87 CMB patients and 87 controls) who underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging and a batter

Central Cognitive Processing Speed Is an Early Marker of Huntington's Disease Onset.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have suggested that cognitive processing speed may be useful for assessing early cognitive change in premanifest Huntington's disease (HD); however, current measures lack the ability to control for the effects of motor dysfunction commonly found in HD. The Computerized Test of Information Processing (CTiP) is a rapidly administered computerized tool that allows for the examination of central cognitive processing speed by using motor-corrected scores to account for motor dysfunction. OBJECTIVE: To examine central cognitive processing speed as an early marker of HD o

Multiple brain networks support processing speed abilities of patients with multiple sclerosis.

Objectives: Many people affected by multiple sclerosis (MS) experience cognitive impairment, especially decreases in information processing speed (PS). Neural disconnection is thought to represent the neural marker of this symptom, although the role played by alterations of specific functional brain networks still remains unclear. The aim is to investigate and compare patterns of association between PS-demanding cognitive performance and functional connectivity across two MS phenotypes. Methods: Forty patients with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) and 25 with secondary progressive MS (SPMS) had n

Obese Adolescents Show Reduced Cognitive Processing Speed Compared with Healthy Weight Peers.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity and obesity-associated diabetes and metabolic syndrome (MetS) continue to rise. Obesity has been linked to structural and functional brain abnormalities, particularly in the frontal lobe. METHODS: One hundred sixty-two adolescents (aged 19.53 ± 1.53 years) underwent medical, neurocognitive, and brain magnetic resonance imaging assessments. Participants were either healthy weight (BMI <25.0 kg/m2 or BMI percentile <85%) or obese (BMI ≥30.0 kg/m2 or BMI percentile ≥95%). We evaluated frontal lobe cognitive functions and the size of the corpus callosum (CC). RESULT

Understanding processing speed weaknesses among pedophilic child molesters: response style vs. neuropathology.

Research shows that pedophilic (PED) child molesters exhibit slower performance speed and greater performance accuracy when compared to nonpedophilic (N-PED) child molesters or other criminal and noncriminal controls. The purpose of the present study was to examine whether these differences reflect a slow/deliberate response style among PEDS (as we have previously hypothesized; Eastvold, Suchy, & Strassberg, 2011; Suchy, Whittaker, Strassberg, & Eastvold, 2009a, 2009b), or a fundamental neuropathological weakness in processing speed. Data came from a larger study examining neurocognition among

Cognitive reserve moderates decline in information processing speed in multiple sclerosis patients.

Cognitive reserve is widely recognized as a moderator of cognitive decline in patients with senile dementias such as Alzheimer's disease. The same effect may occur in multiple sclerosis (MS), an immunologic disorder affecting the central nervous system. While MS is traditionally considered an inflammatory, white matter disease, degeneration of gray matter is increasingly recognized as the primary contributor to progressive cognitive decline. Our aim was to determine if individual differences in estimated cognitive reserve protect against the progression of cognitive dysfunction in MS. Ninety-o

Hemispheric, attentional, and processing speed factors in the treatment of developmental dyslexia.

Aim of the study is to analyze the contributions of hemispheric, attentional, and processing speed factors to the effects of neuropsychological treatment of developmental dyslexia. Four groups of dyslexic children (M-type dyslexia) were treated over a period of four months. A first group (n = 9) underwent Bakker's Hemisphere-Specific Stimulation, with presentation of words in the right and left visual field. A second group (n = 7) received the same stimuli randomly in either visual hemifield. A third group (n = 8) received the same words presented centrally at fixation point. A fourth group (n

Speeded processing of grammar and tool knowledge in Tourette's syndrome.

Tourette's syndrome (TS) is a developmental disorder characterized by motor and verbal tics. The tics, which are fast and involuntary, result from frontal/basal-ganglia abnormalities that lead to unsuppressed behaviors. Language has not been carefully examined in TS. We tested the processing of two basic aspects of language: idiosyncratic and rule-governed linguistic knowledge. Evidence suggests that idiosyncratic knowledge (e.g., in irregular past tense formation; bring-brought) is stored in a mental lexicon that depends on the temporal-lobe-based declarative memory system that also underlies

Serum biomarkers, modifiable risk factors, cognition, and processing speed in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is a major public health concern in aging populations. However, most previous studies have examined serum biomarkers and lifestyle, psychosocial, and clinical factors in isolation, and their associations with global cognition and processing speed remain unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations of serum biomarkers and lifestyle, psychosocial, and clinical factors with global cognition and processing speed among community-dwelling middle-aged and older adults. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from community-dwelling adu

Spatial extension of parafoveal processing predicts reading speed gain during reading acceleration.

Fast and efficient reading involves not only processing the currently fixated word but also simultaneous processing of the upcoming text. Although the role of extrafoveal processing in natural reading has been extensively documented, its contribution to reading acceleration benefits has remained unexplored. In the present study, we sought to investigate whether reading acceleration might act by influencing the efficiency and spatial extent of parafoveal processing. Participants read at either a natural or an accelerated pace while the availability of parafoveal information was independently ma

Preoperative brain connectome predicts postoperative changes in processing speed in moyamoya disease.

Moyamoya disease is a rare cerebrovascular disorder associated with cognitive dysfunction. It is usually treated by surgical revascularization, but research on the neurocognitive outcomes of revascularization surgery is controversial. Given that neurocognitive impairment could affect the daily activities of patients with moyamoya disease, early detection of postoperative neurocognitive outcomes has the potential to improve patient management. In this study, we applied a well-established connectome-based predictive modelling approach to develop machine learning models that used preoperative res

Processing speed and attention training modifies autonomic flexibility: A mechanistic intervention study.

Adaptation capacity is critical for maintaining cognition, yet it is understudied in groups at risk for dementia. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) is critical for neurovisceral integration and is a key contributor to adaptation capacity. To determine the central nervous system's top-down regulation of ANS, we conducted a mechanistic randomized controlled trial study, using a 6-week processing speed and attention (PS/A)-targeted intervention. Eighty-four older adults with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) were randomized to a 6-week PS/A-targeted intervention or an active control without
