How the stigma of low literacy can impair patient-professional spoken interactions and affect health: insights from a qualitative investigation.

BACKGROUND: Low literacy is a significant problem across the developed world. A considerable body of research has reported associations between low literacy and less appropriate access to healthcare services, lower likelihood of self-managing health conditions well, and poorer health outcomes. There is a need to explore the previously neglected perspectives of people with low literacy to help explain how low literacy can lead to poor health, and to consider how to improve the ability of health services to meet their needs. METHODS: Two stage qualitative study. In-depth individual interviews f

Substance abuse patterns and psychiatric symptomatology among three healthcare provider groups evaluated in an out-patient program for impaired healthcare professionals.

Three impaired health care provider groups (N = 84) (nurses, pharmacists, and providers with prescriptive authority) referred for a substance abuse evaluation at an outpatient-based program were compared on demographic and family factors, substance abuse patterns, and psychiatric symptomology as assessed by the Personality Assessment Inventory. Nurses had the highest rates of family history of addiction, problems with benzodiazepines, and psychiatric comorbidity. Overall, health care professionals endorsed opioids twice as often as alcohol as a preferred substance. Family history of addiction,

High prevalence of muscle stability deficits in semi-professional football players-Adaptive Force assessment reveals selective impairment of holding capacity with preserved maximal strength: A cross-sectional study.

PURPOSE: Despite considerable research, strength screening has shown limited value for injury prediction. The concept of muscle stability assessed by Adaptive Force (AF) offers a distinct perspective-addressing neuromuscular holding capacity closer to injury-prone motions rather than pushing strength. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and distribution of muscle stability deficits in football players and their discriminative capacity relative to conventional strength parameters. METHODS: AF and maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) were measured in 23 male semi-professional fo

Evaluation of the psychometric properties of the health care providers' pain and impairment relationship scale (HC-PAIRS) in health professionals and university students from Chile and Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Chronic back pain is a frequent and disabling health problem. There is evidence that ignorance and erroneous beliefs about chronic low back pain among health professionals interfere in the treatment of people who suffer from it. The Health Care Providers' Pain and Impairment Relationship Scale (HC-PAIRS) has been one of the most used scale to assess these misbeliefs, but no studies have been reported in Latin America. Method: We studied the factorial structure of the HC-PAIRS in health personnel and health sciences university students in two Latin American countries: Colombia (n =

A Germany-wide survey of caregiving professionals on climate change and mental health of children and adolescents - factors influencing their relevance rating of extreme weather event associated mental health impairments.

INTRODUCTION: Climate change presents a significant risk for the mental and physical health of young people. In order to identify and properly care for potential mental health impairments from extreme weather events, the relevance of these impairments must be assessed as high by the professional groups providing care for children and adolescents. This raises the question of which factors influence the individual relevance assessment of caretaking professionals? METHODS: Data was collected creating and conducting a Germany-wide online questionnaire via LimeSurvey. The questionnaire was address

Are "Alternative to Discipline" Programs for Nurses With Alcohol and Other Drug Challenges Relevant to Global Contexts? A Scoping Review.

Alternative to discipline programs, defined as programs for nurses 'impaired' by issues such as alcohol and/or drug use, provide treatment and support to return to the profession. This paper aims to explore alternative to discipline programs for nurses to determine whether these programs are relevant to other geographical contexts. A scoping review was conducted in accordance with the JBI methodology. The PRIMSA-ScR checklist was used in this scoping review. The databases searched included MEDLINE (PubMed), Embase (Elsevier), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (EBSCOhost)

Diagnosis and treatment of chemical dependency in professionals.

Accurate diagnosis of chemical dependence is possible with careful evaluation of the patient following the preceding general guidelines. While history is as critical in this field as it is in every other area of medicine or dentistry, we must remain cognizant of resistance in accurate history taking, since the patient has a need to keep the disease hidden. The need for corroborating history through interviews with significant others, spouses or other family members is critical. We all must be aware of the impact of social stigma on our willingness to make the diagnosis, particularly in colleag

Addiction and substance abuse in anesthesiology.

Despite substantial advances in our understanding of addiction and the technology and therapeutic approaches used to fight this disease, addiction still remains a major issue in the anesthesia workplace, and outcomes have not appreciably changed. Although alcoholism and other forms of impairment, such as addiction to other substances and mental illness, impact anesthesiologists at rates similar to those in other professions, as recently as 2005, the drug of choice for anesthesiologists entering treatment was still an opioid. There exists a considerable association between chemical dependence a

User Experiences Among Patients and Health Care Professionals Who Participated in a Randomized Controlled Trial of E-nergEYEze, a Vision-Specific eHealth Intervention to Reduce Fatigue in Adults With Visual Impairment: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue is a common symptom occurring in individuals with visual impairment (VI). Feeling fatigued has a strong impact on an individual's well-being, with profound consequences. Cognitive and emotional functioning, social roles, and participation are negatively affected in severely fatigued individuals with VI. The chemically dependent nurse.

Although exact numbers are not known, it is recognized that addiction to alcohol and other drugs occurs in nurses as it does in other occupations. There is some indication that nurses may be at greater risk for the development of addictive disease because of factors present in the profession. The nursing profession is recognizing the problem impaired practice presents and is working to develop programs to ensure that the issue of the impaired nurse is no longer denied by institutions, administrators, and individual nurses. There is a need for education of the profession in regard to the nature
