Chincup treatment modifies the mandibular shape in children with prognathism.

INTRODUCTION: Although chincups are the preferred treatment for growing children with mandibular prognathism, the mechanism by which chincups improve this condition remains unclear. The aim of this study was to use geometric morphometrics to evaluate changes in the shape of the mandible of prognathic children treated with a chincup. METHODS: Geometric morphometrics were used to evaluate the short-term mandibular shape changes in 50 prognathic children treated with chincups compared with 40 untreated matched controls. Twenty-one 2-dimensional mandibular landmarks from cephalograms taken before

Oblique osteotomy and coronoidectomy in extreme prognathism of Apert syndrome.

We report a case of oblique osteotomy and coronoidectomy for correction of extreme prognathism in Apert syndrome.A 16-year-old girl presented with a prognathic mandible. A prototype model was formed using computed tomography. After a mock bilateral oblique osteotomy of the mandible, the distal segment did not overlap the proximal segment, and it caused bony impingement between the coronoid process and the subcondyle of the proximal segment. An oblique osteotomy of the mandible was done through a submandibular approach, and bilateral coronoidectomy followed. After surgery, mandibular parameters

[Psychology and recurrence tendency in relation to age at operation for prognathism].

Within this study patients with mandibular prognathism were studied as to their psychological situation pre- and postoperatively with the help of the Freiburg Personality Evaluation Sheet. Since it was our special interest, whether psychologically it makes a big difference whether the patients were operated during the time of adolescence or after the age of twenty, the postoperative investigation was carried out with special reference to this point. Without any doubt, the correction of prognathism improved the psychological situation of the patients. It was obvious that for those patients in b

[The results of using extraoral traction in children with a prognathic bite].

Primary and repeated lateral teleroentgenograms of the head of 37 children aged 4-8 with prognathic occlusion were analyzed, recorded on an average in 2 years after employment of a chin sling with extraoral traction. Analysis has shown normalization of the jaws and occlusion in the sagittal plane, resultant from limitation of mesial transposition of the mandible in the skull in the course of facial skeleton growth. This has been achieved at the expense of inhibition of longitudinal growth of the mandibular body and ascending branches more than twofold as against the reference values and was al

Surgical treatment of mandibular prognathism--a review of 25 cases.

Mandibular prognathism is a common developmental jaw deformity with functional disabilities and facial disfigurement, characterised by a prominent mandible. Very satisfying cosmetic and functional results can be achieved by surgery and the literature is replete with surgical techniques for correcting this deformity. This paper discusses the surgical treatment of mandibular prognathism and reviews a series of 25 consecutive patients treated by an extra-oral technique known as Subsigmoid Oblique Osteotomy (Vertical Subcondylar Osteotomy) during a seven-year period, (1969-76).

The role of dental compensations in the orthodontic treatment of mandibular prognathism.

Thirty-six patients with orthodontically treated mandibular prognathism were recalled for cephalometric and clinical evaluation. A comparison group of 32 non-Class III patients was similarly examined. Analysis of variables associated with the anterior dentition and documentationtion of labial gingival recession and tooth mobility led to the following conclusions concerning the role of dental compensations in the orthodontic treatment of mandibular prognathism. 1. Vertical and horizontal dental compensations were quantitated in the dentition of the study group (pretreatment to postretention). 2

A Case of Mandibular Prognathism with Generalized Aggressive Periodontitis and Crowding.

Aggressive periodontitis during adolescence has a poor prognosis due to rapid alveolar bone resorption. Few studies have investigated long-term follow-up after surgical orthodontic treatment performed in conjunction with that for invasive periodontitis. Here, we report a case of mandibular prognathism accompanied by generalized aggressive periodontitis and crowding. A 31-year-old woman was referred to our department for treatment of masticatory dysfunction due to reverse overjet. The patient exhibited a class III molar relationship, protrusion of the ANB of -6.0°, and severe maxillary crowding

Tongue pressure production during swallowing in patients with mandibular prognathism.

UNLABELLED: Abnormalities of swallowing in patients with mandibular prognathism have not been evaluated quantitatively. The aim of this study was to compare tongue pressure production for bolus transfer between volunteers with normal occlusion and patients with mandibular prognathism. The control group had 10 female volunteers with normal occlusion, and the patient group had 10 women with mandibular prognathism. Tongue pressure was measured by a palatal sensor sheet at five sites on swallowing 4 mL of a tasteless and odourless jelly. RESULTS: The tongue pressure waveform differed between the

Mandibular prognathism in Japanese families ascertained through orthognathically treated patients.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with severe mandibular prognathism frequently require orthognathic surgery to correct skeletal disharmony. Genetic and environmental factors are suggested in the etiology of mandibular prognathism, but the precise contribution of these factors is unknown. METHODS: To clarify the impact of genetic factors on mandibular prognathism, we gave a questionnaire to 105 subjects with severe skeletal Class III mandibular prognathism who planned to undergo or had undergone orthognathic surgery. The questionnaire assessed mandibular prognathism in 3 generations of each subject's fa

Obwegeser II method for correction of mandibular prognathism. Case reports.

In case of severe mandibular prognathism with open bite requiring more than 15 mm of mandibular posterior repositioning, it is said that the sagittal splitting methods (Obwegeser I method (1955, 1957) and Obwegeser-Dal Pont (1958) method) are not indicated. In our two cases manifesting severe mandibular prognathism with open bite we performed the Obwegeser II (1964) method. In one of these case we performed partial tongue resection to prevent postoperative relapse. The desired results with regards to facial appearance and occlusion were achieved in both cases.

Orofacial Cleft and Mandibular Prognathism-Human Genetics and Animal Models.

Many complex molecular interactions are involved in the process of craniofacial development. Consequently, the network is sensitive to genetic mutations that may result in congenital malformations of varying severity. The most common birth anomalies within the head and neck are orofacial clefts (OFCs) and prognathism. Orofacial clefts are disorders with a range of phenotypes such as the cleft of the lip with or without cleft palate and isolated form of cleft palate with unilateral and bilateral variations. They may occur as an isolated abnormality (nonsyndromic-NSCLP) or coexist with syndromic

Soft-tissue profile changes after orthognathic surgery of mandibular prognathism.

During surgical correction of facial deformities, accurate prediction of the resulting facial profile is important for the patient and the surgeon. The purpose of the present study was to investigate profile changes after surgical treatment of mandibular prognathism. Thirty patients (20 females and 10 males; ages 17-28 years) with mandibular prognathism underwent vertical ramus osteotomy. Preoperative and postoperative cephalograms were analyzed; landmarks were identified and compared. The mean horizontal setback of the pogonion (Pog) was 11.7 mm. The setback ratios of labrale inferius (Li)/in

Multidisciplinary treatment of mandibular prognathism with multiple congenitally missing teeth.

Surgical orthodontic treatment and dental implant therapy were performed on a man (aged 18 years 8 months) with mandibular prognathism and seven congenitally missing teeth: upper canines, first and second premolars and lower right second premolar. After 17 months of preoperative orthodontic treatment at age 20 years 1 month, sagittal split ramus osteotomy was performed using the remaining upper deciduous teeth as an anchor for intermaxillary fixation. In postoperative orthodontic treatment, the remaining deciduous teeth were extracted, and fixture installation was performed. The entire therapy
