The development and evaluation of a computer-based program to test and to teach the recognition of facial affect.

Autism is a chronic pervasive neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by the early onset of social and communicative impairments as well as restricted, ritualized, stereotypic behavior. The endophenotype of autism includes neuropsychological deficits, for instance a lack of "Theory of Mind" and problems recognizing facial affect. In this study, we report the development and evaluation of a computer-based program to teach and test the ability to identify basic facially expressed emotions. 10 adolescent or adult subjects with high-functioning autism or Asperger-syndrome were included in the in

Teaching participants with developmental disabilities to comply with self-instructions.

Four adults with mild mental retardation were taught to sort based on what two pictures had in common and to name each object and common features of two pairs as well as to comply with a series of instructions to sort the pictures selectively. The criterion task was to inspect a sample pair, sort through a deck of 15 pictures to find those showing what the sample pair had in common, and to repeat a series of pairs. They failed this task and continued to fail even after a supposedly relevant self-instruction. After being taught to act on what they told themselves, they self-instructed correctly

Emotion regulation training to reduce problematic dietary restriction: An experimental analysis.

Evidence suggests that emotion regulation may be a process relevant to problematic dietary restriction. However, emotion regulation has not been evaluated as an intervention target across a range of restriction severity. This study utilized an experimental design to examine whether targeting emotion regulation reduced problematic dietary restriction. Within a self-identified restrictive sample (n = 72), the effects of an emotion regulation condition (i.e., emotion regulation training) were compared to those of a control condition (i.e., nutrition information training) on dietary restriction in

An examination of a Group Curriculum for parents of young children with disruptive behavior.

This study examined effectiveness of a Group Curriculum (GC) for parents of 3- to 6- year-old children with disruptive behavior. The curriculum is based on the book Parenting the Strong-Willed Child. A total of 39 parents were randomly assigned to the GC condition or a wait-list control condition. Assessments occurred at baseline, postintervention (6 weeks after baseline), and 2-month follow-up. Findings indicated that the GC condition was associated with lower levels of child problem behavior and improved parenting at postintervention relative to the control condition. Parents were also satis

Visual Inspection of Topical Ophthalmic Formulations Packaged in Opaque and Semi-Transparent Containers: Working Towards Alignment with USP<790> Visible Particulates in Injections.

Topical ophthalmic solutions, suspensions, and emulsions are typically packaged in opaque or semi-transparent plastic dropper bottles. This packaging provides resistance to breakage and the controlled drop size needed in ophthalmic container systems. Recent changes to USP <771> Ophthalmic Products-Quality Tests have impacted the particulate and foreign matter testing requirements for ophthalmic products dosed via topical application. The USP <771> chapter instructs that topical products undergo visual inspection for particulate matter as described in USP <790> Visible Particulates in Injection

An assessment of the drug therapy education preferences of an interdisciplinary group interested in the elderly.

A survey was conducted to measure the drug therapy education preferences of a diverse group of professionals interested in the elderly. Two hundred forty-four surveys were mailed and 119 were returned (48.8 percent). Seventy-two percent of the respondents were social workers; four percent were registered nurses; the remainder of the respondents (24 percent) were non-health professionals. Most respondents liked all common methods of instruction except self-directed activities and large group discussions. The five topics of greatest interest were drug interactions, adverse drug effects, drugs us

School-Based Mindfulness Instruction: An RCT.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Many urban youth experience significant and unremitting negative stressors, including those associated with community violence, multigenerational poverty, failing educational systems, substance use, limited avenues for success, health risks, and trauma. Mindfulness instruction improves psychological functioning in a variety of adult populations; research on mindfulness for youth is promising, but has been conducted in limited populations. Informed by implementation science, we evaluated an adapted mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program to ameliorate the neg

Syntax PAL: a system to improve the written syntax of language-impaired users.

In our work with children who have difficulty with spelling or with the physical action of writing, we have found a number of children who also have difficulty with written grammar. As an extension of PAL, an existing predictive spelling and typing aid, we have developed a writing aid to help these children with sentence construction. The enhanced system uses the syntax of the initial part of a sentence to enhance the position in the prediction list of syntactically correct words. It was postulated that this would discourage the use of incorrect syntax and encourage the use of correct syntax.

"There is no standard vulva": Sanitized vs. contextualized instruction of hands-on medical skills.

Medical education overlooks bodily variation by presenting a de-contextualized patient. This standardization perpetuates inequality and stigma. Initially a feminist project in the US, Gynecological Teaching Associates (GTAs), or specially trained educators who teach while receiving vaginal/pelvic and breast/chest examinations, are understudied despite how common they are in MD programs. GTAs have been subject to standardization when incorporated into medical school training, but opportunities to challenge the status quo remain. I conducted interviews with 25 GTAs across the United States. Them

Ethical Readiness: A Framework for Integrating Ethical Competence into Military Graduate Medical Education.

INTRODUCTION: Military medicine in armed conflict presents unique ethical challenges, especially under the resource constraints and extended evacuation timelines anticipated in future large-scale combat operations. Currently, there is no standardized military medical ethics (MME) curriculum within U.S. military Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs, leaving a significant portion of the medical force unprepared for high-intensity conflicts and at increased risk of moral injury, thereby compromising operational readiness. The purpose of this study was to characterize the current landscape of

Development, standardisation and pilot testing of an online fatigue self-management program.

PURPOSE: Although an effective face-to-face fatigue program is available, people with transportation, time or geographic restrictions cannot access this intervention. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop and to evaluate effectiveness of an online fatigue self-management program (online FSMP). METHODS: Key features of the face-to-face program were captured and transferred to an online FSMP prototype. Subsequently, three pilot tests were conducted for formative evaluation of the program and necessary changes were made to improve the program. During the third pilot test, the effective

The 'Pleasure&Pregnancy' web-based interactive educational programme versus expectant management in the treatment of unexplained subfertility: protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Many subfertile couples are diagnosed with (relatively) unexplained subfertility and a good prognosis. National professional guidelines (eg, the Netherlands and UK) advise 'expectant management (EM)' for 6-12 months, in which no interaction with healthcare staff is offered. Underpowered studies indicate that face-to-face sex-counselling increases the ongoing pregnancy rates of these couples. In patients with other conditions, web-based interactive educational programmes have the same effect on sexual functioning as face-to-face sex counselling. The 'Pleasure&Pregnancy randomised

[Systematic application of visualized solution algorithms and verbal self-instruction in spelling remediation: initial results of general practice outcomes].

In this study the effects of a remedial spelling training approach were evaluated, which systematically combines certain visualization and verbalization methods to foster students' spelling knowledge and strategy use. Achievement-related pre- and posttest data of two treatment cohorts including children and adolescents with severe spelling disabilities were analyzed. The treatment was administered in single-case or small group sessions and took about 85 hours in average. In each cohort empirical results could demonstrate statistically significant increases in students' spelling test performanc

An Integrative Health Educational Intervention for RNs Working at Night: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Supporting nurses' well-being has become a top priority for nurse leaders, organizations, and nurses themselves. It's important that RNs have effective ways to access and use various integrative health programs and resources that are available to them. But this can be especially difficult for nurses who work at night, who often cannot easily participate in health and wellness activities provided during the day. PURPOSE: To assess whether a 13-week electronic, asynchronous integrative health educational intervention, tailored to the unique needs of clinical RNs working at night, wa

Re-evaluation of a programmed method to teach generalized identity matching to sample.

Programmed training in identity matching to sample was given to six participants who had severe mental retardation, mental age-equivalent scores of 3.0 years or less, and histories of failures in prior assessments and training attempts with standard procedures. An intermediate goal of the training program was to establish one-trial discrimination learning (OTDL), where new discriminations are acquired after a single training trial, OTDL was included because an analysis of the task requirements for identity matching suggested that it could be a prerequisite skill. One participant was eliminated

Development of the Warfighter's Hearing Health Instructional (WHHIP) Primer App.

The Warfighter's Hearing Health Instructional Primer (WHHIP) is a supplemental tool for military hearing conservation programs (MHCPs) and can be accessed by the warfighter on his/her own personal mobile phone. A gap was identified for a supplement to MHCPs that is easily accessible by warfighters to improve hearing health knowledge. The WHHIP aims to instruct the warfighter in best hearing health practices. To do so, four activities are included: Learn, Demos, HPD Check, and Glossary. Learn and Glossary allow the warfighter to scroll through various informational topics related to hearing con
