The authors report a case of Propionibacterium acnes endophthalmitis after intracapsular cataract extraction with implantation of an anterior chamber intraocular lens. The patient's chronic inflammation persisted for 5 years after cataract surgery despite treatment with pars plana vitrectomy, intraocular lens removal, topical and oral steroids, and topical fortified antibiotics. Fluctuations in the inflammation were paralleled by changes in the size and appearance of a white plaque on the posterior corneal surface. Anterior chamber tap cultures were positive for P. acnes after 8 days of incuba

Propionibacterium acnes has been considered as a crucial contributor to the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris. The interaction between P. acnes and the host is mainly mediated by Toll like receptor (TLR) 2 recognition. TLR2 homodimers recognize P. acnes in mice, but here we describe the prerequisite of TLR2/1 and TLR2/6 heterodimers in human cells for P. acnes recognition. P. acnes-induced NF-κB and AP-1activation observed in HEK hTLR2-transfected but not control cells confirmed the specificity of TLR2 recognition. The activation was blocked by neutralizing antibodies against TLR2, TLR1 and TLR6,

BACKGROUND: Many studies have noted an increase in the number of recognized cases of invasive infections due to Propionibacterium acnes, especially after shoulder replacement surgery. The increase in the number of recognized cases of P. acnes, a nonspore-forming, anaerobic, Gram-positive organism, appears due to both an increase in the number of shoulder operations being performed and more specimens being sent for anaerobic cultures. Nevertheless, the optimal surgical and antibiotic management of P. acnes remains controversial.
METHODS: We tested the susceptibility of 106 P. acnes strains fro

In this case report we share a case of infective Pericarditis caused by Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) in an immune-competent, nonsurgical patient. This case and review will illustrate the importance of considering P. acnes as a cause of idiopathic pericardial effusion and effusive constrictive disease. The patient was a 61-year-old male with history of osteoarthritis of the knee. He received an intra-articular steroid injection in July 2013. Two months later, he presented with atrial fibrillation and heart failure. He was found to have pericardial and bilateral pleural effusions which gre

We report a series of four patients who presented with complaints of diffuse non-scarring alopecia. They had similar clinical features of alopecia, hyperseborrhea, and distinct keratinaceous hair casts that encircled the hair shafts. Propionibacterium acnes was isolated from two of the patients' scalp, and Gram-positive, Giemsa-positive bacteria were seen in the hair follicles in the scalp biopsy of one of the patients. The patients' symptoms did not respond to standard treatment for seborrheic dermatitis, but responded to a course of systemic antibiotics targeting P. acnes. We propose a role

In the few reported cases of Propionibacterium infective endocarditis involving prosthetic aortic valves, abscess is common and frequently requires surgery. We report a case of P. acnes infective endocarditis identified on prolonged blood cultures with aortic root abscess involving a Starr-Edwards valve. Intravenous antibiotics and valve replacement led to recovery.

Cutaneous propionibacteria are important commensals of human skin and are implicated in a wide range of opportunistic infections. Propionibacterium acnes is also associated with inflammatory acne vulgaris. Bacteriophage PA6 is the first phage of P. acnes to be sequenced and demonstrates a high degree of similarity to many mycobacteriophages both morphologically and genetically. PA6 possesses an icosahedreal head and long noncontractile tail characteristic of the Siphoviridae. The overall genome organization of PA6 resembled that of the temperate mycobacteriophages, although the genome was much

BACKGROUND: The bacterium Propionibacterium acnes is involved in the induction and maintenance of the inflammatory phase of acne. Recent studies have found that keratinocytes express toll-like receptors (TLRs) implicated in immediate immunity. No studies have, to date, been carried out on the action of P. acnes upon TLR activation in keratinocytes.
OBJECTIVES: Focusing on the inflammatory phase of acne, to clarify the role of P. acnes in immediate immunity by inducing expression of TLR-2 and TLR-4 by keratinocytes. We also studied how the secretion and expression of matrix metalloproteinase (

Moderate to severe facial acne is caused by infection with Propionibacterium acnes, an organism that has also been implicated in subacute osteomyelitis. The symptoms are often indolent in nature, but slowly progressive. We present a case report of subacute P. acnes osteomyelitis at our institution. A high index of suspicion and an extended incubation time are required for diagnosis. Treatment usually requires irrigation and debridement, with or without antibiotics.

A 25-year-old man was previously healthy until he contracted acute Propionibacterium acnes meningitis. Comparison with previous reports of de novo diphtheroid meningitis suggests that this entity can appear with features that are not characteristic of acute bacterial meningitis, including (1) stroke-like syndromes, (2) an afebrile course, and (3) a cerebrospinal fluid with a mononuclear pleocytosis and normal glucose level. The appropriate choice and dosage of antimicrobial agent must be guided by more than in vitro sensitivity data to prevent relapse and possible chronic meningitis. Although

Propionibacterium acnes is a well-known commensal of the human skin connected to acne vulgaris and joint infections. It is extensively studied in planktonic cultures in the laboratory settings but occurs naturally in biofilms. In this study we have developed an in vitro biofilm model of P. acnes and studied growth features, matrix composition, matrix penetration by fluorescent-labeled antibiotics as well as gene expression. Antibiotic susceptibility of biofilms was studied and could be enhanced by increased glucose concentrations. Biofilm cells were characterized by up-regulated stress-induced

Acne vulgaris, a multi-factorial disease, is one of the most common skin diseases, affecting an estimated 80% of Americans at some point during their lives. The gram-positive and anaerobic Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) bacterium has been implicated in acne inflammation and pathogenesis. Therapies for acne vulgaris using antibiotics generally lack bacterial specificity, promote the generation of antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains, and cause adverse effects. Immunotherapy against P. acnes or its antigens (sialidase and CAMP factor) has been demonstrated to be effective in mice, attenuat

BACKGROUND: The anaerobic Gram-positive bacterium Propionibacterium acnes is a human skin commensal that resides preferentially within sebaceous follicles; however, it also exhibits many traits of an opportunistic pathogen, playing roles in a variety of inflammatory diseases such as acne vulgaris. To date, the underlying disease-causing mechanisms remain ill-defined and knowledge of P. acnes virulence factors remains scarce. Here, we identified proteins secreted during anaerobic cultivation of a range of skin and clinical P. acnes isolates, spanning the four known phylogenetic groups.

The genome of Propionibacterium acnes, the microbe presumed to be at least partially etiologic for the development of acne, has recently been decoded. The genome supports long-standing concepts regarding acne pathogenesis, but also demonstrates heretofore unknown and/or unsuspected bacterial properties, which might play a role in disease occurrence. In turn, understanding the genome may lead to new therapeutic avenues, as summarized in this manuscript.

Propionibacterium acnes (formerly Corynebacterium parvum) is part of the human flora and, as such, is associated with several human pathologies. It possesses strong immunomodulatory activities, which makes this bacterium interesting for prophylactic and therapeutic vaccination. The bacterial component(s) and the host receptor(s) involved in the induction of these activities are poorly understood. We show in this study that TLR9 is crucial in generating the characteristic effects of killed P. acnes priming in the spleen, such as extramedullary hemopoiesis and organ enlargement, and granuloma fo

BACKGROUND: Progressive macular hypomelanosis is a common hypopigmentation mainly on the central parts of the trunk, predominantly in young adults, especially women. It is often mistaken for pityriasis versicolor and pityriasis alba. It occurs in all races and has been described in many parts of the world. We discovered follicular red fluorescence restricted to lesional skin. We suspected a relation with a porphyrin-producing bacteria residing in sebum of the pilosebaceous duct, and we therefore performed a study in 8 patients. Observation In all biopsy specimens taken from lesional skin of 8

Cutibacterium acnes protects skin homeostasis. The species has three subspecies, and associations between C. acnes subsp. acnes and acne, C. acnes subsp. defendens and prostate cancer, and C. acnes subsp. elongatum and progressive macular hypomelanosis have recently been suggested. Different phylotypes/clonal complexes may cause prosthetic joint and other infections, and virulence factors such as fimbriae, biofilms, multidrug-resistance plasmids, porphyrin, Christie-Atkins-Munch-Petersen factors and cytotoxicity contribute to infections. Isolates are subtyped by multiplex PCR or multi- or sing
