Propionibacterium acnes Susceptibility and Correlation with Hemolytic Phenotype.

BACKGROUND: Many studies have noted an increase in the number of recognized cases of invasive infections due to Propionibacterium acnes, especially after shoulder replacement surgery. The increase in the number of recognized cases of P. acnes, a nonspore-forming, anaerobic, Gram-positive organism, appears due to both an increase in the number of shoulder operations being performed and more specimens being sent for anaerobic cultures. Nevertheless, the optimal surgical and antibiotic management of P. acnes remains controversial. METHODS: We tested the susceptibility of 106 P. acnes strains fro

Compressive spinal epidural mass caused by Propionibacterium acnes.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Propionibacterium acnes is a gram-positive and facultative anaerobe bacillus that is found within sebaceous follicles of the human skin and recognized as a cause of infections after spinal surgery. To our knowledge, there has been no previously reported case of symptomatic compressive chronic inflammatory epidural mass caused by P. acnes in a patient with no prior spinal procedures. PURPOSE: This study aimed to describe a case of primary spinal infection by P. acnes. STUDY DESIGN: This study is a case report of a condition not previously described in the literature. METH

The Incidence of Propionibacterium acnes in Shoulder Arthroscopy.

PURPOSE: To document the skin colonization and deep tissue inoculation rates associated with arthroscopic shoulder surgery and how these rates differ with procedural and demographic factors. METHODS: We prospectively recruited outpatient shoulder arthroscopy patients who agreed to participate and met the inclusion criteria from February 2013 to May 2014. All patients received routine antibiotic prophylaxis intravenously. Initial cultures were obtained before the skin preparation by swabbing the skin at the 3 standard portal sites: posterior, anterosuperior, and anterolateral. The skin prepara

Propionibacterium acnes: A Treatable Cause of Constrictive Pericarditis.

In this case report we share a case of infective Pericarditis caused by Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) in an immune-competent, nonsurgical patient. This case and review will illustrate the importance of considering P. acnes as a cause of idiopathic pericardial effusion and effusive constrictive disease. The patient was a 61-year-old male with history of osteoarthritis of the knee. He received an intra-articular steroid injection in July 2013. Two months later, he presented with atrial fibrillation and heart failure. He was found to have pericardial and bilateral pleural effusions which gre

Propionibacterium acnes activates caspase-1 in human neutrophils.

Propionibacterium acnes is a Gram-positive, slow-growing, anaerobic bacillus, predominantly found as a commensal on the skin and mucous membranes of adults. It is, however, also considered an opportunistic pathogen; mostly associated with acne vulgaris, but rarely also with severe infections such as infective endocarditis, prosthetic joint infections, and deep sternal wound infections following cardiothoracic surgery. In addition, P. acnes has recently been found in high frequency in prostate tissue from patients with prostatitis and prostate cancer. The NOD-like receptors (NLR) act as intrace

The prevalence and pathogenicity of Propionibacterium acnes keratitis.

PURPOSE: To study the prevalence, pathogenicity, and virulence of Propionibacterium acnes keratitis. METHODS: All cases of infectious keratitis submitted to the microbiologic laboratory of the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary between January 1, 2003, and April 6, 2006, were reviewed. Those cases in which P. acnes was recovered from culture were collected, and the medical records studied in depth. RESULTS: Of 1555 cultures submitted to the microbiology laboratory, 1329 (85.5%) were positive for growth. One hundred twenty four (9.3%) of the 1329 cases yielded P. acnes in at least 1 culture mediu

Induction of toll-like receptors by Propionibacterium acnes.

BACKGROUND: The bacterium Propionibacterium acnes is involved in the induction and maintenance of the inflammatory phase of acne. Recent studies have found that keratinocytes express toll-like receptors (TLRs) implicated in immediate immunity. No studies have, to date, been carried out on the action of P. acnes upon TLR activation in keratinocytes. OBJECTIVES: Focusing on the inflammatory phase of acne, to clarify the role of P. acnes in immediate immunity by inducing expression of TLR-2 and TLR-4 by keratinocytes. We also studied how the secretion and expression of matrix metalloproteinase (

Propionibacterium acnes meningitis in a previously normal adult.

A 25-year-old man was previously healthy until he contracted acute Propionibacterium acnes meningitis. Comparison with previous reports of de novo diphtheroid meningitis suggests that this entity can appear with features that are not characteristic of acute bacterial meningitis, including (1) stroke-like syndromes, (2) an afebrile course, and (3) a cerebrospinal fluid with a mononuclear pleocytosis and normal glucose level. The appropriate choice and dosage of antimicrobial agent must be guided by more than in vitro sensitivity data to prevent relapse and possible chronic meningitis. Although

Propionibacterium acnes in the pathogenesis and immunotherapy of acne vulgaris.

Acne vulgaris, a multi-factorial disease, is one of the most common skin diseases, affecting an estimated 80% of Americans at some point during their lives. The gram-positive and anaerobic Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) bacterium has been implicated in acne inflammation and pathogenesis. Therapies for acne vulgaris using antibiotics generally lack bacterial specificity, promote the generation of antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains, and cause adverse effects. Immunotherapy against P. acnes or its antigens (sialidase and CAMP factor) has been demonstrated to be effective in mice, attenuat

Cutibacterium acnes (Propionibacterium acnes) and acne vulgaris: a brief look at the latest updates.

While the commensal bacterium Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) is involved in the maintenance of a healthy skin, it can also act as an opportunistic pathogen in acne vulgaris. The latest findings on P. acnes shed light on the critical role of a tight equilibrium between members of its phylotypes and within the skin microbiota in the development of this skin disease. Indeed, contrary to what was previously thought, proliferation of P. acnes is not the trigger of acne as patients with acne do not harbour more P. acnes in follicles than normal individuals. Instead, the loss of the skin microbia

Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) resistance and antibiotic use in patients attending Australian general practice.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Antibiotic resistance in the community, including transfer between bacteria, is a growing concern for clinicians. Acne is commonly treated in general practice, sometimes with antibiotics. The aim of this study is to measure the rate of carriage of antibiotic resistant Propionibacterium acnes 10 years apart in general practice and the relationship of resistance to type of treatment, as well potential effects on other flora. METHODS: Patients (N = 215) with acne presenting to Australian Capital Territory and south-eastern New South Wales general practices were swabbed for

Propionibacterium acnes-Derived Circulating Immune Complexes in Sarcoidosis Patients.

Propionibacterium acnes is a potential etiologic agent of sarcoidosis and a dysregulated immune response to the commensal bacterium is suspected to cause granuloma formation. P. acnes-derived insoluble immune complexes were recently demonstrated in sinus macrophages of sarcoidosis lymph nodes, suggesting local proliferation of the bacterium in affected organs. In the present study, we developed a method for detecting P. acnes-derived immune complexes in human blood by measuring the concentration of P. acnes-specific lipoteichoic acid (PLTA) detectable after an antigen retrieval pretreatment of

Cutibacterium (Propionibacterium) acnes Infection of the Native Wrist Joint.

Cutibacterium (Propionibacterium) acnes (C. acnes, previously known as P. acnes) is an anaerobic organism that commonly colonizes the human skin. After Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp., it is a common organism associated with deep prosthetic shoulder joint infections. We describe the case of rapidly progressive arthropathy of the native wrist secondary to infection with C. acnes. Diagnosis was made on prolonged enrichment cultures. The patient went on to complete a long-term course of oral sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim with clinical improvement. To the best of our knowledge, this is

SAPHO, autophagy, IL-1, FoxO1, and Propionibacterium (Cutibacterium) acnes.

Overt infection by Propionibacterium acnes is lacking in many SAPHO syndromes, and antibiotics have only a transient and incomplete effect, either in SAPHO syndrome or acne. As several auto-inflammatory bone disorders sharing overproduction of IL-1β can mimic SAPHO, this syndrome could partly depend on genetically encoded overproduction of IL-1β. However, cyclic intracellular infections, mostly by P. acnes, can contribute to the enhanced IL-1β release by some skin cells, and probably by bone cells. P. acnes is indeed a powerful trigger of NLRP3-inflammasome activation and IL-1β, leading to ost

Cutibacterium (formerly Propionibacterium) acnes infections associated with implantable devices.

Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes), a Gram-positive biofilm-forming rod implicated in acne vulgaris, is increasingly recognized for its role in implant-associated infections. The diagnosis of C. acnes implant-associated infections remains challenging. The optimal treatment is a combination of both surgical intervention and antibiotic therapy. Areas covered: In this review, we discuss the different types of implant-associated infections caused by C. acnes. We also highlight the clinical manifestations pertaining to the various sites of infection, and identify several risk factors previously reporte

Rosmarinus officinalis extract suppresses Propionibacterium acnes-induced inflammatory responses.

Propionibacterium acnes is a key pathogen involved in the progression of acne inflammation. The development of a new agent possessing antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity against P. acnes is therefore of interest. In this study, we investigated the inhibitory effect of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) extract on P. acnes-induced inflammation in vitro and in vivo. The results showed that ethanolic rosemary extract (ERE) significantly suppressed the secretion and mRNA expression of proinflammatory cytokines, including interleukin (IL)-8, IL-1β, and tumor necrosis factor-α in P. acnes-st

Propionibacterium acnes delayed infection following spinal surgery with instrumentation.

Propionibacterium acnes detection in culture media was previously considered a contamination but recently its infectious role was discovered in post-spinal surgery infections. P. acnes might be introduced during surgery. Its diagnosis is based on non-specific clinical signs, image indications of infection, and the conclusive microbiological sign. Furthermore, its diagnosis is difficult because of slow growth rate and low virulence, delaying its presentation. Usually, the infection is manifested after a couple of months or years. Here, a 65-year-old man presented with drainage at the site of in
